B.Des placements from IIT Bombay and IIT Guwahati are way more promising than most people realize — this is actually one of the best-kept secrets in Indian education.

IIT Bombay IDC (Industrial Design Centre) — B.Des / M.Des:

  • Placement rate 2024: ~88-92% (officially placed + PPOs combined).
  • Average CTC for B.Des graduates: ?12-16 LPA.
  • Highest offers: Up to ?35-45 LPA (primarily from international UX/product design roles — Google, Adobe, Swiggy, Navi, Samsung Design Seoul).
  • Top recruiting companies: Google, Tata Elxsi, GE Healthcare, Philips Design, Swiggy, Ola, Microsoft, Razorpay.

IIT Guwahati Design Department:

  • Newer but strong program. Average: ?8-12 LPA. Fewer top-tier company visits vs IDC Bombay.
  • Growing alumni network; better suited for product/industrial design than pure UX/UI.

Scope in 2025+: This is genuinely the right time to be in design from a premium institution. UX Design, Product Design, and AI-interaction design are among the fastest-growing roles in tech. IIT Bombay B.Des grads are among the most recruited UX professionals in India's startup and product ecosystem.

Common misconception: B.Des is just "artsy" — it's actually heavily research and prototype driven. The IDC curriculum includes engineering principles, human factors, and manufacturing processes. Graduates work in consulting, corporate design, and startups — not just agencies.

B.Des (Bachelor of Design) from IIT Bombay or IIT Guwahati — placement scenario:

IIT Bombay IDC (Industrial Design Centre): one of India's premier design schools. placement rate is very high (90%+). avg packages Rs.12-20 LPA. companies: Tata Motors, Philips Design, Microsoft, Google, consultancies, design studios. also strong for higher studies (abroad for MDes/MA).

IIT Guwahati Design: newer design department but IIT brand helps. placement improving. avg Rs.8-15 LPA approximately. good for North-East India industry connects and design consultancies.

Scope of B.Des in India: design is a growing field — UX/UI design, product design, automotive design, graphics/branding. top designersfrom IIT IDC work at global tech/product companies. the IIT brand opens doors that regular design colleges don't.

starting salaries are lower than BTech CS but the career ceiling for excellent designers is very high — senior UX/product designers at top companies earn Rs.30-80+ LPA. the career is meaningful and creative. B.Des from IIT is a genuinely strong choice if design is your passion.

Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Both IIT Bombay and IIT Guwahati BDes branches offer excellent job opportunities and the high figures are a reflection of the same. IIT Bombay BDes recorded a placement percentage of 71%

IIT Guwahati BTech and BDes average package stood at INR 26.33 LPA. DOD recorded a placement percentage of 71.05%. The branch offers a plethora of future prospects and most students venture into successful careers in the field of Interaction Design. The institute has a record of having some of the best recruiters like Microsoft, Samsung RnD, Flipkart, Uber, Sprinklr, Ola, and many more who recruit designers from IIT Guwahati mainly for the role of UI / UX designers. The demand for these jobs and designers is increasing day by day so getting a good package for a BDes student shouldn’t be a concern for students of either institute.

For a specific company to stay in the race, it’s important to design a product that would attract more users than the company's competitors and it all required a good designer. So the role of a Designer and the scope of the branch, in general, should not be underestimated.

One of my friends studied at IIT Guwahati. According to him, choosing IIT Guwahati over IIT Bombay will be a better option.

  • The demand for designers is increasing day by day. Nowadays, companies have a requirement for a great interface. Designers have high scope in their future.
  • Most of the students graduating from IIT Guwahati are inclined towards the field of Interaction Design.
  • Companies like Microsoft, Uber, Flipkart, Sprinklr, Ola, etc. hire B.Des graduates for roles of UI or UX designers.
Categories B.Des from IIT Bombay B.Des from IIT Guwahati
Course Fee 8.33 lakh 8.63 lakh
Placement Percentage - 80-95%
Highest CTC 27.9 LPA 35 LPA
Average CTC - 12-15 LPA
Recruiting Companies 3M, Adobe, Cadbury, Barclays, etc. Flipkart, GE Healthcare, Mindtree, JP Morgan, etc.

Finally, it depends on the marketing of their design, and why it stands out among similar designs. A designer needs to be creative and well updated with the ongoing trends and interests of the industry.
