ADBU Ph.D. (Computer Applications) FAQs
Ques. Is the Ph.D. in Computer Applications at ADBU a full-time programme, and can working professionals pursue it?
Ans. The Ph.D. programme at ADBU is officially classified as full-time. However, working professionals who are employed can apply, provided they submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer at the time of the interview. Many faculty members from colleges and universities in Northeast India pursue this programme while continuing their teaching positions, as ADBU specifically offers a seed money incentive of Rs. 10,000 per year for its own faculty members enrolled in the Ph.D. programme. That said, candidates should be aware that the mandatory one-semester coursework requires regular physical attendance on campus, so proximity to Guwahati or the ability to take leave during the coursework period is important.
Ques. What is the difference between applying with a NET/GATE qualification versus without it for Ph.D. admission at ADBU?
Ans. Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET (Computer Science and Applications) or GATE (CS/IT) or similar national-level tests are exempted from the written entrance test conducted by ADBU. However, all candidates, regardless of NET/GATE status, must attend the personal interview where they are required to present a research proposal of up to 300 words. The research proposal should clearly outline the area of study, its relevance, and the candidate's motivation. NET/GATE qualification also makes candidates eligible for UGC-JRF/SRF fellowships, which provide a monthly stipend (Rs. 37,000 for JRF and Rs. 42,000 for SRF), significantly reducing the financial burden of the programme.
Ques. What are the research areas available under Ph.D. (Computer Applications) at ADBU, and how do I choose a supervisor?
Ans. The Department of Computer Applications at ADBU offers research in a wide range of areas including Data Science, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Cyber Security, Cloud Computing, Edge Computing, Fog Computing, Internet of Things, Health Informatics, Image Processing, Speech Processing, Geographic Information System, Generative AI, Agentic AI, Quantum Computing, Human-Computer Interaction, and Applied Cryptography. Supervisor allocation is done by the university based on the candidate's research proposal and the availability of faculty with matching expertise. It is advisable to review the research profiles of faculty in the Department of Computer Applications on the ADBU website and align your research proposal accordingly before the interview, as this significantly improves your chances of selection and ensures a good supervisor match.
Ques. How many research publications are required before submitting the Ph.D. thesis at ADBU?
Ans. As per ADBU's Ph.D. regulations, a research scholar must have at least two research publications co-authored with their supervisor in Scopus Indexed, Web of Science, or peer-reviewed journals, with affiliation to Assam Don Bosco University, before submitting the thesis. A research paper jointly published by two research scholars may be given equal weightage to both, with justification about their contribution provided by the supervisor and countersigned by the Head of the Department. This requirement ensures that the research work has been validated through the peer-review process before the final thesis submission.
Ques. What is the total duration of the Ph.D. programme at ADBU, and what happens if I cannot complete it within the stipulated time?
Ans. The Ph.D. programme at ADBU has a minimum duration of 3 years and a maximum of 5 years from the date of formal registration. Formal registration itself must be completed within 18 months of admission (after completing the mandatory one-semester coursework and getting the research proposal approved). If a candidate requires an extension beyond 5 years, they must apply for case-by-case permission from the university. Importantly, any extension period will attract semester fees at the rate prevalent at the time of extension, not the fees applicable at the time of original admission, which means fees could be higher if the university revises its fee structure in the interim.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for Ph.D. scholars at ADBU, and what are the approximate costs?
Ans. Yes, ADBU has hostel facilities for both male and female students at its Tapesia Campus (the main campus spread over 500 acres in Sonapur, about 25 km from Guwahati city centre). Hostel accommodation is optional for Ph.D. scholars and is not included in the standard fee structure. Hostel fees are charged separately and vary based on room type and occupancy. Students from outside Guwahati who need to be on campus for coursework and research activities typically opt for hostel accommodation. It is advisable to contact the university directly at contact@dbuniversity.ac.in or call 09476 690 950 for current hostel fee details and availability, as hostel allocation is subject to availability.
