ADBU MA FAQs
Ques. What are the two specialisations in MA Education at ADBU, and how do I choose between them?
Ans. MA Education at ADBU offers two specialisation tracks: Educational Leadership and Educational Psychology. The Educational Leadership track is designed for those who aspire to leadership and administrative roles in educational institutions – it covers Educational Policy and Law, Financial Management and Accounting, Educational Administration, and Ethics and Social Responsibility in Education. The Educational Psychology track is for those interested in understanding student behaviour, mental health, and counselling in educational settings – it covers Human Development and Learning, Life Span Development, Counselling Skills for Educational Psychologists, and Child and Adolescent Mental Health. Students choose their specialisation at the time of admission or at the beginning of the programme. Those with a background in Psychology or Social Work may find the Educational Psychology track more aligned with their interests, while those with administrative or teaching experience may prefer Educational Leadership.
Ques. Is MA Education at ADBU equivalent to M.Ed.? Can I use this degree to become a college lecturer?
Ans. MA Education and M.Ed. (Master of Education) are different qualifications. MA Education is an academic postgraduate degree that provides advanced knowledge in education theory, research, and specialised areas. M.Ed. is a professional degree specifically designed for school teachers and educational practitioners. For college teaching, the UGC requires a postgraduate degree (MA/MSc/MCom etc.) with at least 55% marks, followed by NET/SET qualification. An MA Education from ADBU (a UGC-recognised university) qualifies you to appear for UGC NET in Education, which is the pathway to college teaching. However, for school teaching, a B.Ed. is still required separately.
Ques. Can students from non-Education backgrounds (e.g., Psychology, Social Work, Science) apply for MA Education at ADBU?
Ans. Yes, MA Education at ADBU has a broad eligibility criterion – graduation in any stream with 50% aggregate. This means students from Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Science, Commerce, or any other background can apply. This is a significant advantage over many M.Ed. programmes that require a B.Ed. or teaching experience. The programme's interdisciplinary curriculum (covering Philosophical, Sociological, and Psychological Foundations of Education) is designed to be accessible to students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates with experience in educational administration are given preference, but it is not a mandatory requirement.
Ques. What practical components are included in the MA Education programme at ADBU?
Ans. The MA Education programme at ADBU has a strong practical component. In Semester II, students undertake a School Visit to observe real educational settings. In Semester III, Teaching Practice is included alongside the first phase of the Dissertation. In Semester IV, students complete an Internship and the second phase of the Dissertation. The Journaling component in Semester I (a technique for personal and academic growth) also develops reflective practice skills. These practical elements ensure that graduates are not just theoretically equipped but also have hands-on experience in educational settings, making them more employable in schools, educational NGOs, and training organisations.
Ques. What career options are available after MA Education from ADBU?
Ans. MA Education graduates from ADBU can pursue a wide range of careers. In the academic sector, they can appear for UGC NET in Education and pursue college teaching or research. In the school sector, they can work as school counsellors (Educational Psychology track) or school administrators and principals (Educational Leadership track) after gaining relevant experience. Other career options include educational content development, curriculum design, educational consulting, NGO and community education work, and roles in government education departments. The Educational Psychology specialisation also opens doors to school counselling and student support services, which are in growing demand across India.
Ques. How is MA Education at ADBU different from M.Ed. programmes at other universities in Assam?
Ans. MA Education at ADBU is fundamentally different from M.Ed. programmes in several ways. First, MA Education is an academic degree open to graduates from any stream, while M.Ed. typically requires a B.Ed. and teaching experience. Second, ADBU's MA Education offers structured specialisations in Educational Leadership and Educational Psychology, which are not typically available in standard M.Ed. programmes. Third, the curriculum at ADBU is research-based and internationally informed, with components like Journaling, School Visit, Teaching Practice, and a two-phase Dissertation. Fourth, the residential campus environment at Tapesia provides an immersive learning experience. The fees (Rs. 1,70,000 for 2 years) are higher than state university M.Ed. programmes but reflect the quality of infrastructure and curriculum.
