ADBU MA Economics FAQs
Ques. Is a written entrance test required for MA Economics admission at ADBU? What is the selection process?
Ans. No, MA Economics at ADBU does not require a written entrance test. Unlike some other PG programmes at ADBU (such as MTech, MCA, and MSW which have entrance tests), MA Economics admission is based entirely on the personal interview and past academic record. After submitting the online application and paying the Rs. 600 application fee, the Admission Office will schedule a personal interview and communicate the date/time individually. The interview assesses the candidate's understanding of economics, analytical thinking, and motivation for pursuing the programme. Candidates with a strong background in Statistics or Mathematics are given an advantage.
Ques. Can students from non-Economics graduation backgrounds apply for MA Economics at ADBU?
Ans. The official eligibility criterion for MA Economics at ADBU requires graduation in Economics with a minimum of 50% aggregate. This means candidates must have Economics as a major or honours subject in their undergraduate degree. Students who have done a general BA with Economics as one of three subjects may also be considered, but the primary requirement is an Economics background. Candidates with Statistics or Mathematics in their graduation are given an advantage. Students from Commerce backgrounds (BCom) who have studied Economics as a subject may also enquire with the Admission Office about eligibility.
Ques. What is the total cost of doing MA Economics at ADBU for 2 years, including hostel?
Ans. The total course fee for MA Economics over 2 years is Rs. ₹1,80,000 (including admission fees and caution deposit). If you opt for hostel accommodation, the hostel fee is ₹14,000 per semester (4 semesters = ₹56,000) plus a one-time refundable caution deposit of ₹6,000, bringing the total hostel cost to ₹62,000. Food is not included in hostel fees and is purchased from on-campus canteens. Budgeting approximately ₹3,000–5,000 per month for food, the total 2-year cost including hostel and food would be approximately Rs. 3.2–3.5 lakhs, making it one of the most affordable PG Economics programmes at a private university in Northeast India.

Ques. How is the MA Economics programme at ADBU different from MA Economics at Gauhati University or Cotton University?
Ans. ADBU's MA Economics is a private university programme with a more structured and contemporary curriculum compared to traditional state university programmes. Key differences include: (1) The curriculum includes modern topics like Behavioural Economics, Gender Economics, Environmental Economics and Sustainability, and Statistical Packages for Data Analysis – subjects not always covered in state university programmes. (2) The mandatory Dissertation in Semester IV provides research experience. (3) The residential campus environment at Tapesia offers a focused academic setting. (4) The fees are higher than state universities (₹1,80,000 vs. ₹7,000–17,000 at Gauhati/Cotton University), but the programme offers better infrastructure, smaller class sizes (40 seats), and more personalised faculty attention. (5) The degree is awarded by ADBU, a NAAC-accredited private university, which is recognised by UGC.
