IIIT-H Ph.D. (Spatial Informatics) FAQs
Ques. Can students from a Computer Science background apply for the Ph.D. in Spatial Informatics at IIIT Hyderabad?
Ans. Yes, students with a Computer Science background can apply for the Ph.D. in Spatial Informatics, provided they have sufficient experience in working with geospatial data. Alternatively, CS background students can also apply for the regular Ph.D. in CSE at IIIT-H and choose to do their research in the Spatial Informatics area, in which case they will be governed by the Ph.D. in CSE programme guidelines.
Ques. What is the typical duration of the Ph.D. in Spatial Informatics at IIIT Hyderabad?
Ans. The typical duration of the Ph.D. programme is 5 years. The programme has four stages: course requirements, breadth qualifiers, dissertation proposal defense, and final dissertation defense. Regular semester-wise progress reviews are conducted, and if there is no satisfactory progress in the first 2 years, the candidate may be asked to leave the programme.
Ques. Is the PGEE exam difficult for students from Geography or Forestry backgrounds applying to the Ph.D. in Spatial Informatics?
Ans. For Spatial Informatics applicants, only the General Aptitude (GA) paper is required in the PGEE written exam. The Spatial Science subjective component is evaluated during or just before the interview, not in the written exam. Students from Geography, Forestry, or Urban Planning backgrounds who have a good understanding of geospatial concepts and strong analytical skills generally find the process manageable.
Ques. What research areas can I work on during the Ph.D. in Spatial Informatics at IIIT Hyderabad?
Ans. The Lab for Spatial Informatics (LSI) at IIIT-H covers a wide range of research areas including Remote Sensing, GIS, Spatio-temporal data handling, GeoVisualization, Spatial Databases, Spatio-temporal analytics, Spatial Big Data, Satellite/UAV image analysis, GeoAI, and applications in Land use, Environment, Forests, Hydrology, Climate, Urban and traffic simulation models, Web and Mobile GIS, and Geospatial standards. The lab is also actively involved in Open Source GIS (FOSS4G) development.
Ques. Do Ph.D. students in Spatial Informatics at IIIT Hyderabad get opportunities to publish and present research internationally?
Ans. Yes, Ph.D. students are expected to publish and present their research findings in top-rated journals and conferences. The institute provides travel support for students to present their published research at reputed national and international conferences. Many students have also been awarded corporate fellowships (e.g., from Google and TCS) that provide additional research support.
Ques. Can I apply for the Ph.D. in Spatial Informatics without appearing for the PGEE exam?
Ans. Yes, there are alternative routes. Candidates with a high GATE score may be directly shortlisted for the interview without appearing for PGEE. Candidates with a valid NET qualification are also eligible for direct interview shortlisting. Additionally, exceptional students and those already pursuing research at IIIT-H can apply through the PG Standing Committee route, which also involves an interview but bypasses the PGEE written exam.
