IIIT Hyderabad M.Tech CSIS FAQs
Ques. What makes M.Tech CSIS at IIIT Hyderabad different from M.Tech CSE?
Ans. M.Tech CSIS (Computer Science and Information Security) is specifically focused on information security, covering topics like system and network security, cryptography, principles of information security, and information security audit. M.Tech CSE is broader, covering all areas of computer science. CSIS has a much smaller intake (approximately 10 students per year) compared to CSE, and all CSIS students receive a stipend under the ISEA project. Both programmes use the same PGEE exam (CSE + General Aptitude) for admission.
Ques. Do all M.Tech CSIS students at IIIT Hyderabad receive a stipend?
Ans. Yes. All full-time Indian citizen students enrolled in the M.Tech CSIS programme receive a stipend for living expenses as per the rules of the ISEA (Information Security Education and Awareness) project, funded by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), Government of India. International students and part-time students are not eligible for this stipend.
Ques. What is the C-STAR research centre at IIIT Hyderabad?
Ans. C-STAR (Center for Security, Theory and Algorithms) is the research centre at IIIT Hyderabad that houses the M.Tech CSIS programme. It has highly qualified faculty specializing in cryptography, information security, algorithms, and theoretical computer science. The centre has good computing facilities and a well-equipped library. M.Tech CSIS students work under C-STAR faculty for their project work.
Ques. What are the career options after M.Tech CSIS from IIIT Hyderabad?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers as cybersecurity engineers, security analysts, cryptographers, network security specialists, and security researchers at companies like RSA Labs, nVidia, CDAC, and other technology firms. The programme's strong research orientation also prepares students for PhD programmes and academic careers. The growing demand for information security professionals in India and globally makes this a highly valuable degree.
Ques. Is the M.Tech CSIS programme at IIIT Hyderabad suitable for candidates from non-CS backgrounds?
Ans. The programme requires a B.Tech in CS/ECE/IT, or MCA with B.Sc. (Maths), or M.Sc. (Maths/CS). Candidates from non-CS backgrounds (e.g., Mechanical, Civil Engineering) are not eligible. The programme is designed for candidates with a strong foundation in computer science and mathematics, as the curriculum covers advanced topics in algorithms, operating systems, and security from the first semester.
Ques. How competitive is the PGEE exam for M.Tech CSIS at IIIT Hyderabad?
Ans. The M.Tech CSIS programme admits only approximately 10 students per year, making it one of the most competitive M.Tech programmes at IIIT Hyderabad. The PGEE exam consists of a CSE Subject Test and a General Aptitude section. Candidates with a strong foundation in Data Structures, Algorithms, Operating Systems, Computer Networks, and Discrete Mathematics are well-positioned. Given the small intake, even a high PGEE score may not guarantee admission, so candidates should also apply to other programmes as a backup.
