IIIT Hyderabad MS CL FAQs

Ques. What is Computational Linguistics and how is it different from NLP?

Ans. Computational Linguistics (CL) is the scientific study of language from a computational perspective, combining linguistics, computer science, and cognitive science. Natural Language Processing (NLP) is the engineering application of CL, focused on building systems that process and understand human language. At IIIT Hyderabad, the M.S. in CL covers both the theoretical foundations (linguistics, language typology, grammar formalisms) and the applied aspects (NLP, machine translation, speech processing), making it a comprehensive programme for those interested in language technology research.

Ques. Do I need a linguistics background to apply for the M.S. in Computational Linguistics at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. No. The programme is primarily designed for candidates with a B.Tech/B.E. in Computer Science. A linguistics background is not required, as the programme itself teaches the necessary linguistic foundations through courses like Computational Linguistics I and II, Language Typology, and Phonetics. However, a strong interest in language and linguistics is beneficial.

Ques. What research areas are available under the M.S. (Computational Linguistics) programme at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. Research areas include Natural Language Processing, Machine Translation, Speech Processing, Information Retrieval and Extraction, Indian Language Technologies, Computational Morphology, Ontology, Natural Language Dialog Systems, and Cognitive Science. The LTRC at IIIT Hyderabad is particularly known for its work on Indian languages, making it a unique research environment for those interested in multilingual NLP.

Ques. What is the curriculum structure for the M.S. (Computational Linguistics) at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. The programme is structured over 4 semesters. Semesters 1 and 2 involve advanced coursework including Computational Linguistics I and II, Language Typology and Universals, Natural Language Processing, NLP Applications, and electives from both linguistics and CS. Semesters 3 and 4 are dedicated entirely to MS Thesis research.

Ques. What are the career prospects after completing M.S. (Computational Linguistics) from IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in NLP research at top technology companies (Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta), language technology startups, academic positions, and government language technology projects. The growing demand for conversational AI, machine translation, and multilingual NLP systems makes CL graduates highly sought after. LTRC alumni have gone on to work at leading AI labs and universities globally.

Ques. Can I pursue a Ph.D. after completing the M.S. in Computational Linguistics at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. Yes. The M.S. by Research programme is an excellent stepping stone to a Ph.D. Students who demonstrate strong research aptitude during their M.S. can apply for the Ph.D. programme at IIIT Hyderabad or at other top institutions in India and abroad. IIIT Hyderabad also allows M.S. students to convert to a Ph.D. programme based on their research performance and faculty recommendation.

IIIT Hyderabad: 2 Answered Questions

How is IIIT Hyderabad's MSIT course for a non it student ? What sort of companies recruit from the MSIT course??

IIIT Hyderabad MSIT course is perfect for someone who has a flawed academic profile like a gap year or something. People like these have very limited opportunities so this course might uplift their chances of getting placed decently. However, since you specifically asked, this course is not a good option if you have an IT background. This is because the curriculum is repetitive and covered in a shorter duration. Also, if you are employed, it’s better to invest your efforts in improving your work experience than wasting time on this course.

The placements are decent and in fact, during the first phase, you might get into top IT giants like Amazon, Salesforce, American Express, etc. But if you fail to get placed in these then the only option left is to get into service sector-based companies.

So, this course is best suited for those who are looking for a means to upgrade their academic profile.

Which college should I choose between IIT, Hyderabad & IIIT, Hyderabad for a CSE course?

Divya SarafLives in Hyderabad

Had I been in your place, I would have chosen IIIT Hyderabad over IIT Hyderabad. While both colleges offer a good CS program, IIIT Hyderabad is the clear winner when it comes to CS. Consider the following points of comparison

  • IIT Hyderabad is a new IIt, so choosing it just because of the IIt tag would be a blunder.
  • IIT Hyderabad is still in its development phase and its campus still needs a few more facilities to become full-fledged operating.
  • IIIT Hyderabad has a better religion and brand name among the IT giants and therefore its placement scenario is way better than IIT Hyderabad.
  • IIIT Hyderabad is well-known for its achievements in competitions like ACM ICPC and GSOC.

I have my cousins in both the institutes and from their discussions I have concluded that IIIT Hyderabad leads in CS opportunities.
