The B.Tech in Computer Science + M.S. in Computing and Human Sciences by Research (CHD) is a pioneering 5-year dual degree programme offered by the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H). This unique interdisciplinary programme bridges the divide between technology and the human sciences, training students to be equally proficient in computer science and social sciences/humanities. The programme is designed for intellectual pioneers who want to understand the complex interplay between computers and society, using computational tools to ask questions in the social sciences, and using social science methods to understand computer science. Upon successful completion, students earn two degrees: a B.Tech in Computer Science and an M.S. by Research in Computing and Human Sciences (requiring a thesis defence). The programme is offered in full-time on-campus mode with a very limited seat intake, making it one of the most unique and selective programmes in India.

Admissions for the 2026 batch are currently open via the UGEE (Undergraduate Entrance Examination) mode. The UGEE 2026 application portal is open until 31st March 2026, with the entrance exam scheduled for 2nd May 2026 and interviews from 4th to 6th June 2026.

Key Points

  • Students earn two degrees: B.Tech in Computer Science and M.S. by Research in Computing and Human Sciences, with the M.S. requiring a full research thesis.
  • The curriculum totals 201 credits over 5 years, with approximately 15 courses each in computer science and human sciences, plus maths, natural sciences, linguistics, electives, and a thesis.
  • Computer science courses cover programming, NLP, big data, ML, and AI; human science courses cover sociology, history, philosophy, cognitive sciences, and literature.
  • The first two years build a strong foundation in both CS and human sciences; from the third year, students choose electives to focus on their research area.
  • Graduates can pursue careers in academia, industry, government, media, social sector, and entrepreneurship, with the ability to bridge technology and society.
  • The programme is ideal for students who are passionate about both technology and the humanities, and want to pursue research at the intersection of these fields.

IIIT-H CHD FAQs

Ques. What exactly is Computing and Human Sciences and who is this programme for?

Ans. Computing and Human Sciences (CHD) is an interdisciplinary field that sits at the intersection of computer science and the social sciences/humanities. The programme is for students who are equally passionate about technology and understanding society, culture, history, philosophy, or cognitive sciences. It is ideal for those who want to use computational tools (NLP, big data, ML, AI) to study social phenomena, or who want to use social science methods to understand how technology shapes society. If you are someone who finds both coding and reading about society equally exciting, CHD is designed for you.

Ques. Will I be at a disadvantage in placements compared to pure CSE students?

Ans. Not necessarily. CHD graduates at IIIT Hyderabad have actually recorded the highest average package (INR 36.35 LPA in 2023-24) among all dual degree streams, including CSD (CSE + MS CSE). The interdisciplinary profile of CHD graduates is highly valued by top technology companies for roles in UX research, AI ethics, policy, product management, and social computing. The 100% placement rate and strong average package demonstrate that the industry values the unique combination of technical and humanistic skills that CHD graduates bring.

Ques. What kind of research projects do CHD students work on?

Ans. CHD students work on research projects that bridge computing and human sciences. Examples include: using NLP and big data to analyse social media discourse; studying the societal impact of AI and algorithmic decision-making; computational approaches to historical text analysis; cognitive science research using computational models; studying misinformation and its spread using network analysis; and using social science methods to understand human-computer interaction. The research is genuinely interdisciplinary and often produces work that is publishable in both CS and social science venues.

Ques. Can CHD graduates pursue a PhD in social sciences or humanities after this programme?

Ans. Yes. The M.S. by Research component of the CHD programme, with its thesis in Computing and Human Sciences, provides a strong foundation for PhD admissions in both computer science and social science/humanities departments at top universities globally. Many CHD alumni have gone on to pursue PhDs at leading universities in fields such as computational social science, science and technology studies, cognitive science, and human-computer interaction. The interdisciplinary nature of the degree is actually an advantage for PhD applications in emerging fields.

Ques. How is the CHD programme different from a regular humanities or social science degree?

Ans. The CHD programme is fundamentally different from a standard humanities degree. Students earn a B.Tech in Computer Science alongside the M.S. in Computing and Human Sciences, meaning they are fully trained computer scientists with deep expertise in social sciences. They can programme, build ML models, work with big data, and deploy AI solutions, while also being trained in rigorous social science research methods. This combination is extremely rare and positions graduates for roles that neither pure CS graduates nor pure humanities graduates can fill.

Ques. Is there a specific social science discipline that CHD students specialise in?

Ans. The CHD programme covers multiple disciplines in the human sciences, including sociology, history, literature and culture, philosophy, and cognitive sciences. In the first two years, students take compulsory courses that provide a broad foundation across these disciplines. From the third year, students choose electives to focus on a specific area or theme for their research. The thesis in the fifth year is typically focused on one discipline or a specific interdisciplinary research question. Students have the flexibility to pursue the area that interests them most, guided by faculty mentors.

IIIT Hyderabad: 2 Answered Questions

How is IIIT Hyderabad's MSIT course for a non it student ? What sort of companies recruit from the MSIT course??

Sabeer Chalana

IIIT Hyderabad MSIT course is perfect for someone who has a flawed academic profile like a gap year or something. People like these have very limited opportunities so this course might uplift their chances of getting placed decently. However, since you specifically asked, this course is not a good option if you have an IT background. This is because the curriculum is repetitive and covered in a shorter duration. Also, if you are employed, it’s better to invest your efforts in improving your work experience than wasting time on this course.

The placements are decent and in fact, during the first phase, you might get into top IT giants like Amazon, Salesforce, American Express, etc. But if you fail to get placed in these then the only option left is to get into service sector-based companies.

So, this course is best suited for those who are looking for a means to upgrade their academic profile.

Which college should I choose between IIT, Hyderabad & IIIT, Hyderabad for a CSE course?

Divya SarafLives in Hyderabad

Had I been in your place, I would have chosen IIIT Hyderabad over IIT Hyderabad. While both colleges offer a good CS program, IIIT Hyderabad is the clear winner when it comes to CS. Consider the following points of comparison

  • IIT Hyderabad is a new IIt, so choosing it just because of the IIt tag would be a blunder.
  • IIT Hyderabad is still in its development phase and its campus still needs a few more facilities to become full-fledged operating.
  • IIIT Hyderabad has a better religion and brand name among the IT giants and therefore its placement scenario is way better than IIT Hyderabad.
  • IIIT Hyderabad is well-known for its achievements in competitions like ACM ICPC and GSOC.

I have my cousins in both the institutes and from their discussions I have concluded that IIIT Hyderabad leads in CS opportunities.
