IIIT-H B.Tech CSE FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between B.Tech CSE (single degree) and B.Tech + MS by Research (CSD dual degree) at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. The B.Tech CSE is a 4-year single degree programme primarily admitted through JEE Main scores. The B.Tech + MS by Research in CSE (CSD) is a 5-year dual degree programme admitted through UGEE (IIIT-H's own entrance exam + interview). The dual degree includes a research thesis component and is designed for students interested in research-oriented careers or higher studies. Both programmes have the same core CSE curriculum in the first two years, but the dual degree has a stronger research focus in the later years.

Ques. Is IIIT Hyderabad better than NITs for B.Tech CSE?

Ans. IIIT Hyderabad is widely considered superior to most NITs for B.Tech CSE specifically, due to its research-driven curriculum, higher average placement packages (Rs. 31+ LPA vs Rs. 10-20 LPA at most NITs), and the quality of faculty and research output. Many students who receive admission at both IIIT-H and top NITs choose IIIT-H for CSE. However, for branches other than CSE and ECE, NITs may offer more options.

Ques. What JEE Main percentile is required for B.Tech CSE at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. IIIT-H does not publish a fixed cutoff percentile. Based on historical data, the closing rank for B.Tech CSE at IIIT-H through JEE Main is typically in the range of 99.5+ percentile (top 2,000-3,000 ranks in JEE Main). The exact cutoff varies each year based on the applicant pool. Female applicants may have a slightly different cutoff due to the Diversity Pool reservation.

Ques. Can I get admission to IIIT Hyderabad B.Tech CSE without JEE Main?

Ans. Yes. IIIT-H offers multiple admission channels beyond JEE Main. The UGEE mode (own entrance exam + interview) is for the dual-degree programme. The SPEC mode is for students from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas or integrated 6-year programmes. Olympiad winners can also get direct admission. Students studying abroad can apply through the DASA channel. Board-based admissions are also available. So students who did not appear for JEE Main or did not score well can still apply through these alternative channels.

Ques. What is the hostel situation at IIIT Hyderabad? Is accommodation guaranteed for B.Tech students?

Ans. IIIT Hyderabad has on-campus hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Hostel accommodation is generally available for all B.Tech students, especially in the first year. The hostel charges are approximately Rs. 4,000 per month and mess charges are approximately Rs. 5,000 per month, paid semester-wise. The campus is located in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, which is a major IT hub, providing students with excellent exposure to the tech industry.

Ques. What kind of research opportunities are available for B.Tech CSE students at IIIT Hyderabad?

Ans. IIIT-H is organised around research centres covering areas like Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Robotics, Computational Linguistics, Human-Computer Interaction, and more. B.Tech CSE students can join these research centres from as early as the second year, work on live research projects, co-author papers, and even file patents. This research exposure at the undergraduate level is a key differentiator of IIIT-H compared to most other engineering institutes in India and is a major reason why IIIT-H graduates are offered R&D roles directly by top companies.

Is CSE faculty at IIIT Hyderabad good?

Anupama Chauhanstudied at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad

My friend studies in IIIT-Sricity which shared some faculties with IIIT Hyderabad initially as it was under its mentorship.

Generally, you can find both good and bad professors here. But the bad here does not mean underqualified, but arrogant ones. By no means will you find a professor who is underqualified and their extensive knowledge is their biggest weapon. Some of them are as great as Prof Raj Reddy, a Turing award winner which is considered a Nobel Prize or Oscar for Computer Science. So you can get an idea of the level of faculties here.

In reality, most students at IIIT Hyderabad are dependent on peers or seniors more than their faculty. So you can stop bothering about the parity of the professors here.

Where can I get assignments given to CSE students at IIIT Hyderabad?

Adinath JainStudied at IIIT Hyderabad

IIIT Hyderabad assignments are usually released in a platform called Moodle which has been created solely for the purpose of sharing study materials among the IIIT Hyderabad students. To access this platform you need to be an IIIT Hyderabad student and have connection to IIIT Hyderabad LAN and credentials.

It’s difficult to procure these assignments on the internet as they are available on the institute's intranet only. So, if you aren’t a student here, try getting help from one.

What should I choose between IIT rank 1300-1500 (predicted rank) , IIIT Hyderabad CSE and BITS Pilani (Score - 369)?

Sayantani Barman
Aishwarya ShastriLives in Hyderabad

Your rank is pretty good and you are likely to get both, IIIT Hyderabad CSE and BITS Pilani. However, had I been in your place, I would have chosen IIIT Hyderabad. There are a number of reasons that support my choice.

  • IIIT Hyderabad is a CS-oriented institute so follows a well-structured and CS-tailored curriculum. The curriculum is flexible and concepts are delivered in a dynamic way through classes, tutorials, labs, and assignments.
  • IIIT Hyderabad conducts rigorous classroom sessions that ensure maximum student involvement. The concepts are not just delivered but taught thoroughly. Students have explained the logic behind everything.
  • The lab sessions are usually taught by TAs who guide you and explain the practical concepts thoroughly. They help you overcome the major and minor problems in coding.
  • Students are given very challenging problems in tutorials that help them improve drastically.
  • The assignments are set excellently by the professors who want to keep the students one step ahead of the classes and prepare them for the exams. The assignments are discussed during tutorials to ensure everyone completes them without any problem.

In all, IIIT Hyderabad gives you a sense of freedom to explore yourself and your surroundings better.

Is ISM Dhanbad CSE better than IIIT Hyderabad CSE?

Aishwarya ShastriLives in Hyderabad

I assume you are specifically talking about the CSE branch only. In that case, IIIT Hyderabad is certainly better than ISM Dhanbad in many ways. It has better research opportunities, curriculum, placement scenarios, better recognition among software companies, and a higher number of people qualifying for ICPC and GSOC.

However, everything about IIIT Hyderabad is CS-tailored so if you are open to other options or aren’t yet certain of CSE, then choosing ISM Dhanbad will do you more good.

So ultimately the ‘better’ college depends on your choice.

How is the CSD course different from CSE course of IIIT Hyderabad?

Farjana Basir
Aishwarya ShastriLives in Hyderabad

The BTech degree offered in both the courses is similar so the foundation courses taught in the initial 2 years are exactly the same. From the third year, you will be asked to choose a lab where you will be conducting research. Students are given many options to choose from.

Some of these include the following:

  • Robotics Research Centre
  • Computer Vision
  • Spatial Informatics
  • Center for Data Engineering

So the third year witnesses additional courses that are specific to your branch. Both CSE and CSD students will be working on similar problems and will be publishing research papers in the 3rd and 4th years. In the fifth year, students have to write their thesis. One of my friends joined CSE and Robotics Research Centre and is very happy with the results.

What are the reasons that IIIT-Hyderabad ECE is not as good as its CSE?

Aishwarya ShastriLives in Hyderabad

The question is highly illogical as no branches are comparable, rather it’s a matter of preferences. You can say that placements of CSE are better than ECE but to say that to the entire branch would be making a false claim.

In any engineering institute you will find the average packages of the CSE branch higher than other branches but does this mean the other branches are not as good? The answer is no. The placements are directly affected by the demand in industry and it has nothing to do with the credibility of the branch. If you are genuinely interested in ECE, then CSE won’t be a good choice for you irrespective of how lucrative the package you are offered. So it’s a subjective matter.

People tend to adopt the sheep mentality and flock to CSE just because everyone is doing so and fail to analyze their own passions and interests. The increasing size of packages and international offers has resulted in a preconceived notion that CSE is better. In reality, both ECE and CSE branches are equally good with equally good opportunities, faculties, and education.

So it’s advisable to make the decision without any preconceived notions.

Fees and Financial Aid:

The tuition fees are too much compared to other engineering colleges in India. They do increase the fees every year like 10k or something. So like per semester, around 2.5lacs would be required for education including hostels and messes. They do provide student loans like SBI Scholar for about 40lacs and also there is a pay-it-forward scheme where one of the alumni pays for your fees and you pay the fees of another student after you graduate. I have not taken any roles as such since I have just started my campus life.

There are two ways on which the college provides financial assistance . one is through bank loan of upto 30 lakhs without any security deposit. the bank is sbi which is inside the campus only . the other way is through alumni support .in this the students fee is paid by alumni fund and the students needs to repay the amount to the alumni support group after getting a job within 2 years . the mess and tution fee will cost around 45-50k per semester depending upon what meals we register for. we get scholarships such as Realiance foundation, ongc and LG scholarship. so far we have recoredre 100 percent placements last to last year . our college has summer internships also with decent stipend. our campus is very research oriented so it often gets interns who are intereseted in reasearch work .
