University of Essex offers 40+ scholarships, of which 12 are accessible to Indian applicants. Awards range from a £1,000 early-payment discount to £10,000 GREAT Scholarships and fully-funded PhD studentships. Most internal Essex scholarships are automatic, so you need no separate form for the flagship undergraduate and Master’s discounts.

  • Standard international Master’s tuition (2026-27): approximately £22,000 per year (INR 28.35 Lakhs).
  • With Global Talent Masters Scholarship (£5,000 tuition discount): approximately £17,000 (INR 21.91 Lakhs).
  • Layered with the £1,000 Early Bird Discount: approximately £16,000 (INR 20.62 Lakhs), saving INR 7.73 Lakhs.
  • Next India-priority deadline: Chevening 2027-28 closes October 6, 2026 at 11:00 UTC.

Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 GBP = INR 128.88 as of August 2026. A "tuition discount" reduces the fees Essex invoices you; it is not a cash payout.

External Government Scholarships for University of Essex

Three government-backed schemes fund Indian Master’s applicants at Essex outside the internal university awards. Each of these requires an application to the funder directly, not to Essex.

Chevening Scholarship Full tuition, monthly stipend, return airfare (support typically £40,000+, INR 51.55 Lakhs) Indian graduates with 2 years work experience applying to any one-year UK taught Master’s; three Essex course choices allowed October 6, 2026 at 11:00 UTC for 2027-28 entry

Reddit Insight: Indian Chevening applicants targeting Essex cluster their three course choices in Politics, Human Rights, and Data Science Master’s. These Essex departments post the strongest QS subject positions and support the leadership-impact story assessors weight.

Chevening pays a monthly stipend covering Colchester or London-area living costs. Commonwealth pays the same, but the six development themes restrict subject choice. Inlaks Foundation reviews an interview panel round after the written stage.

FAQs

Ques. What is the maximum scholarship funding an Indian student can stack at University of Essex?

Ans. An Indian Master’s applicant can layer the £10,000 GREAT Scholarship, £5,000 Global Talent Masters Scholarship, and £1,000 Early Bird Discount. The internal stack totals £16,000 (INR 20.62 Lakhs). External schemes such as Chevening or Commonwealth cover full tuition plus stipend, reaching over £40,000 (INR 51.55 Lakhs) of total support.

Ques. When should Indian applicants apply for University of Essex scholarships to maximise chances?

Ans. Submit your Essex course application by January for the October 2026 intake to unlock automatic scholarships and the £1,000 Early Bird Discount. For India-priority external awards, target October 2026 (Chevening deadline October 6, 2026) and May 2027 (GREAT tentative deadline May 31, 2027).

Ques. Do I need a separate application form for University of Essex scholarships?

Ans. Most Essex internal scholarships, including the International Undergraduate Scholarship, Global Talent Masters Scholarship, and Academic Excellence International Masters Scholarship, are automatic. Essex assesses eligibility from the transcripts and fee status you supply during course application. GREAT, Chevening, and Commonwealth require separate application forms submitted through their own portals.

Ques. What does the GREAT Scholarship at University of Essex actually cover?

Ans. The GREAT Scholarship at Essex is a £10,000 (INR 12.89 Lakhs) tuition discount applied to any one-year full-time taught Master’s programme. It does not include a stipend or travel costs. Essex offers one GREAT slot per India cycle, so the shortlist is competitive.

Ques. Does a University of Essex scholarship cover living costs in Colchester?

Ans. Internal Essex scholarships are tuition-only discounts; they do not cover Colchester rent, food, or travel. Chevening and Commonwealth pay a monthly stipend that covers living costs. Colchester monthly living costs sit around £900 to £1,100 (INR 1.16 to 1.42 Lakhs) for a postgraduate student.

Ques. What academic threshold do I need for a University of Essex Master’s scholarship?

Ans. The Academic Excellence International Masters Scholarship (up to £7,000) targets first-class undergraduate results, typically 65% and above under CBCS grading in Indian universities. The Global Talent Masters Scholarship is broader and accepts strong 2:1 equivalent transcripts, roughly 55% to 60% aggregate from most Indian universities.

Scholarship

  • I received a £4000 scholarship, which was for all indian students.
  • There was no award amount. Every Indians receieved it.
  • Everyone who joins a UK university from India receives an amount of scholarship. That is all I can say. And that is all I know. I don't know about my batchmates' scholarship, which is the exact amount, because we never ask these things.

  • The campus life at Essex was vibrant and inclusive. There was always something happening — international food festivals, cultural nights, Diwali and Holi celebrations organised by the Indian Society, music gigs, career networking events, and charity fundraisers.
  • The Students’ Union supports over 100 societies and clubs, ranging from sports (like cricket, badminton, football) to cultural (like the Bollywood Dance Society, South Asian Society).
  • I personally was a part of the Debate Society and the Indian Society, which was a great way to meet like-minded people and feel at home. Sports facilities are excellent, and I occasionally use the gym and join casual football games too.

I decided to go for this university because of its ranking, flexibility and duration of the course. The admission process was very smooth and seamless, the admission team was very cooperative and responsive. 10/10 for EBS staff. Every email was responded to in detail which further helped me to take the next step in a much better and easy way. I had prepared for IELTS to get admission as part of the process and did all the study for it by myself. I was a working professional at that time in India, YouTube helped me prepare for this exam, and I did it all by myself. Within a month I took the exam and scored a band of 7 overall. With regard to choosing the college and other paperwork, I took help from Blue Sky Education, based in Kolkata. They handheld me throughout the process and made my worries less. Now I have successfully graduated from the University of Essex and working here in London, UK. It's an amazing place for students who want to learn and have a good time on campus.
