Colleges Where I Was Accepted
Reason for choosing my college
- It has a relatively better mathematics department and better ranking position in the QS. Also, the modules offered suited my interest areas in mathematics. Also, it was rated as one of the highest employability universities.
Colleges Where I Was Rejected
Reason for Rejection
- I applied too late for Durham University and the University of Sussex mathematics department perhaps rejected me because the modules they offered did not match the areas I am interested in, which were listed in my SOP.

Tips to enhance your application
- Get good recommendation letters and a good SOP which is personal and not generic and apply early for better chances of getting selected and even earlier for scholarships. Also write relevant interest areas else, however strong your SOP may , if the department does not specialise in those areas, then there is a low chance of selection.
Admission Experience
- Bristol is first of all a very nice city and the university has a really good math department and it is strong in the areas I wanted to study. Also, it is one of the best universities in the UK for employability. It is also highly ranked in the QS university rankings, making it a top choice for top students across the world.
Class Schedule
- 15 classes a week and usually runs anywhere in between 9 to 5. Average length of a class is about an hour.
- There were two other Indians in my course. Amount of study depends from course to course and person to person but for Maths you will need to put a lot more time in assignments and self-study as compared to class hours.
Faculty
- Faculties are very approachable. I am not sure of the Faculty to student ratio, as there are undergrads as well. Faculties will definitely help in letters of recommendation if you have a good connection with them. I am not sure if they would recommend you for a field totally unrelated unless it's a character recommendation.
Campus Life
- There is only one campus; however, various departments are spread across the city of Bristol. For example, the Dental School is located towards the city centre and the Veterinary dept is towards the outskirts of the city. There are campus fests almost every week but I usually attend those relevant to my interests.
Part Time Jobs
- Most Indians work in hospitality like restaurants or as cashiers or receptionists in shops and malls. Some also work as sales assistants in clothing stores.
- On average, they usually get paid from 11 to 15 pounds an hour. It can be difficult to get a part-time job initially due to the volume of new students applying at once. However, with time it should be possible. For part-time, Indeed will be better or even some recruitment agencies.
- There are various job opportunities at the university; for example, you could request your teachers and do a TA for a lower class or work in the library part time or you could also volunteer for fundraising activities for the University.
- There are also company or industry links for some courses where you can do internships or a placement year. The maximum time of work allowed during term time is 20 hours per week.
Placement
- People in industry-related courses find it easier to get jobs and it is a major advantage if you have related work experience.
- However, it could be quite difficult depending on the job market these days. You could go without a full-time job for months and even those with full-time jobs are usually in start-ups. It depends on the job market and the above comments are in relation to the year 2024-25.
