Colleges Where I Was Accepted
Reason for choosing my college
- I specifically looked for global rankings, infrastructures, facilities equipped with heavy industrial machines and tools, and location. The University of Manchester stood on top in my checklist based on the mentioned factors.

Tips to enhance your application

Admission Experience
- I really wanted to focus on English-speaking countries where I don't have to stress about learning any foreign languages with core expertise. One of the most important factors in selecting the University of Manchester was its accreditation and rankings globally. It is part of Russell Group and the course "Aerospace Engineering" is tied up with reputed globally recognised organisations such as IMechE, Engineering Council and RAeS, which makes the degree more valuable from an industry point of view.
- The program offered by the university comprises theoretical plus practical demonstrations, which serve as a stepping stone while entering a job market. The lab facilities, workspaces, heavily equipped manufacturing units, and hypersonic wind tunnel facility are some of the great perks of such a highly ranked university. My overall experience was wonderful throughout.
Class Schedule
- My course being in the engineering category, classes (theory + labs) were scheduled almost everyday throughout the week (Mon-Fri). Usually the first lecture starts around 9:00 in the morning. My class had only 5-6 Indians, including me; total strength was nearly 40 for MSc Aerospace Engineering. As the course length was one full year, it needed a lot of effort and attention.
- An average of at least 12-14 hours per day was necessary to successfully complete the modules, assignments and submissions.
Faculty
- The faculties' that taught me throughout were very knowledgeable and interactive. They have good industry insights and are always willing to help. We can always ask for doubts and help if stuck while solving the assignments. Dissertation supervisors are friendly, good input givers, and they really help you with full capacity to achieve outcomes within the timelines.
Campus Life
- Events and extracurriculars are a part of beautiful campus life. I personally got a chance to attend a field trip from my university to the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, a home to many aircraft, missiles and other things used in World Wars and are now stationed at the museum. Moreover, you can be a part of international cultural society, where you can help organise events.
Part Time Jobs
- I have seen most Indians working part-time in cafes, grocery stores, hotels, etc. I did not involve myself with any part-time job so I do not have much idea about it. There are advertisements around for part-time opportunities and it's not a hassle to get one. I have heard that the average pay is 8-10 GBP/hour, sometimes more as well. I am not sure about it though.
- There are many roles available to students on Career Connect (the job portal handled by the university). These roles can be full-time, part-time, internships, etc. It's easy to register and start job hunting since day 1. Also, there are various job fairs, such as autumn, Winter and summer fairs, where you can be in touch with some good industrial players and can register for their job vacancies.
Placement
- While looking for full-time job opportunities in your core domain, you need to be very proactive. Graduate role starting salary for engineers is 22,000 GBP per annum but again, this band varies with what type of domain and job role you are looking for.
- Campus offers various job postings through their job portal, which serves as a friendly service. Along with this, that portal offers CV tailoring sessions, mentoring sessions and many other helpful things. Job hunting as an immigrant is actually tough and needs patience.
Accommodation
- I searched through local agents. This can be considered cost-effective as compared to on-campus accommodation. The only drawback of staying off campus is that you don't make friends easily, which can make you feel home-sick at times. I have seen a lot of students staying on campus being more involved in groups.
