What Students Say
Likes
- The campus is amazing
- The University is very close to Liverpool City Center and Liverpool Lime Street Train station
- Since Liverpool is a student city, people from all over the world are enrolled in University of Liverpool and its a student friendly university.
Dislikes
- There are actually less dislikes from my end. As the courses were 1 year, it became really hectic to do part time jobs. People have balanced it, but i am from a data science background. So we had a lot of assignments, so balancing part time and university studies is hard as well devote majority of the time to studying.
- The graduation - unlike the graduations which we see on movies/ TV, here graduation is pretty simple. There is just a walk on the podium. The graduation certificates will be given before the ceremony commences. So that part was not nice and we were not given anything on the stage during the ceremony.
- I had many of my classes during the morning time, this is just my dislike. maybe people like the morning classes.
Course Curriculum
- In terms of difficulty for my course data science - it is hard, having previous experience will help a lot. people who came right after their UG studies felt hard while doing the assignments. There were both written exams as well as weekly assignments.
- Positive aspect is that we get challenged with tough questions in our assignments. Negative maybe some courses want us to do more of writing essays so that many might not like it.
- I usually had morning classes and i had classes for all 5 days in the week 9-11. and after that 2-4.
- for data science there were around 300 students for compulsory modules and for optional modules it varies as there are many optional modules. on an avg if i have to tell then 40-50.
- 60% of students in data science were Indians and the other 30 % included students from china.
Admission Experience
-
I had applied for 7 colleges and i got accepted in all 7. The names are
University of Liverpool.
University of Manchester.
University of Sheffield.
University of Newcastle.
University of Glasgow.
Exeter University
Kingston University - I had a IELTS score of overall 8 and i had got 93 in my 12th grade English exam. So they do check both IELTS and 12th Grade marks as well. Some Universities might call for a small interview.
- I wanted this college because I felt the courses which they offered were aligning with my module interest and i had 2 years of prior experience as data analyst at cognizant. So it was easy while choosing my preferred course and university and i have mentioned which universities i got based in my priority above.
- Admission process - I gave my IELTS in December 2022, applied for the universities by the beginning of Jan. Got my conditional offer letter by march i guess and we had to accept this to get an unconditional offer letter. This i think i got it soon, like within 2 weeks and we had to pay around 2000 pounds as a deposit. This varies from course to course. and i got my (CAS - this is required to apply for visa ) july end and i got my Visa by August end.
- I think many universities' minimum IELTS score should be 6.5 overall with more than 6 in each modules ( listening, reading, writing and speaking) University of Manchester asks for overall 7 i guess. Since i had an overall score of 8 i got accepted into all universities.
- The admission process was smooth
- I had applied for sept intake as this is where majority students take up their masters in the UK. It is good time as well because the cold starts from AUg/sept and in dec/jan it will be very cold so people coming in jan might face it hard to accommodate soon. The whole admission timeline - I gave my IELTS in December 2022, applied for the universities by beginning of Jan. Got my conditional offer letter by march i guess and we had to accept this to get an unconditional offer letter. This i think i got it soon like within 2 weeks and we had to pay around 2000 pounds as a deposit. This varies from course to course. and i got my (CAS - this is required to apply for visa ) july end and i got my Visa by August end.
Faculty
- Primary faculty who teaches will be 1-3. but there will be tutor sessions where many other PHD students will try to help students. In terms of mentor 1 faculty mentors around 5 students throughout the year.
- The teaching methodology is good and very advanced. It is enough to get jobs but since the UK job market is down many have not got jobs yet.
- No faculties wont help with part time jobs there is a student support team which helps students in part time jobs. In terms of full time jobs also it is less
- Most of them are very good. They have their own style of teaching and it varies from teacher to teacher.
Campus Life
- There are North, South, East, West and central campuses. They are not that far from each other. From the central campus other campus are 5-10 mins walk.
- 2 Libraries are Harold Cohen and Sydney Jones. Sports facility is there as there is separate building for sports. Medical services - We will have NHS free service as this will be paid during the application process as medical fee during the visa stage.
Part Time Jobs
- Only students who are about to peruse PHD will get teaching assistant, Research assistant and Department assistant roles as most courses are for 1 year only in master's and will be busy with their own course works or during dissertation period they will get this opportunity.
- I am not sure about the pay rate.
- Jobs near University of Liverpool are mostly off campus as there are plenty of off campus jobs available throughout Liverpool. Guild is the other on campus job, but it is very limited.
- max hrs per week as per UK gov during term time is 20 hrs and 40 during holidays.
- There are limited campus jobs and it will be hard to secure campus jobs.
- Currently it is 12 per hour and it will increase to 12.75 in april 2025. It is easy to get part time job off campus, but it is hard to manage studies and work especially if they are from domains like data science. so people usually take part time jobs during the dissertation/ project period. There are agencies like ARC, FGH, Happy, IPM which offers jobs for different roles in many stadiums and events and we can apply directly in the official job portal of job which we are looking to work
Placement
- I really can't answer this as i dont know since the UK job market is bad now.
- This again depends on their work experience and working location - London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester pay more but the living cost is more there as well as compared to cities like Liverpool. For an entry level data analyst it might range from 30k to 50k pounds per annum.
- Applying on Linkedin, indeed and official job portals.
- Since job market is down many have not got jobs and there is no placement concept in the UK, we have to look for jobs on our own.
- Again there is no concept of placement in the UK
Accommodation
- I had opted for University Student accommodation. I found this through the official University website.
- monthly rent was around 640 per month.
- Just one challenge, i didn't know who my roommates were before coming here as university accommodation tries to mix people from countries to have a nice bond. But there is an option to choose for mix or single gender Clusters. All will have ensuite rooms with a common kitchen.
- 5 mins walk to all the classes. Many Indians stay in off campus accommodations as it is cheaper, around 110-120 per week which will be less than 500 per month
Exams
- UK universities including University of Liverpool generally take the IELTS exam as their main exam and many universities do consider 10th and 12th English marks as well.
- 1 SOP and 3-4 LORs is required. This can be either from a previous company or Previous study colleges.
- I didn't have any interviews since i had experience in this field but if someone is applying for different field than what they have currently studying, they might be having a small call/ online interview.
Fees
- My Tuition fee was 21500 pounds for the entire course. The tuition fee was around 9000 pounds. 160 per week for 51 weeks.
- Both the tuition fee and accommodation fee can be paid in 2-3 installments. I think the 1st should be before October. 2nd should be before January and 3rd should be before completion of the course. There is an option of 2 installments as well where you pay 60% of Tuition fee and accommodation fee before semester 1 ends and remaining 40% in second semester
- Monthly cost - since most of the shops are within walking distance transportation cost was less for me and they usually charge 2 pounds for single travel from 1 place to another. this can be for 1 stop or 1st stop to last the price is same. Since i am vegetarian, groceries used to cost around 50 pounds per month. For non vegetarians it might be more
Scholarship
- Yeah i did receive 2 scholarships
- 1 for applying early and having a good IELTS score and 2nd was common for all the students from India. Both were 2500 pounds so i had a scholarship of 5000 pounds.
- Other classmates did get different scholarships as well, some for medical. Some for having good grades in subjects during their engineering.
- I think everyone does get a minimum scholarship of 2500 if they apply early. around dec/ jan period for sept intake
