Swansea University, Masters in Public Health and Health Promotion

Course Curriculum

8

  • It's difficult. its a masters course and they will not spoon feed! they expect you to have minimum knowledge and utmost interest in the subject. they will go briefly over the course and will expect you to do your research to the best possible and understand.
  • Mine was mostly theoretical, which i did not appreciate much, it was long full days from 9-5pm with 3 hours of lectures and no break. that eventually makes you lose interest. i would have appreciated shorted class duration and multiple days instead

Admission Experience

  • I was in January intake so not many universities have the winter intake so my selection was restricted. But also my field was selective so I only applied to a handful of universities whose modules impressed me. I was shortlisted and accepted in Swansea University, Birmingham city university, Cardiff University. i was shortlisted for Aberdeen University, they took a very long time before sending the acceptance letter, by that time i had gone ahead with other universities.
  • I was confused between Swansea University and Aberdeen University. they both, according to my field, provided a good blend of modules and are in good ranking. I was shortlisted for Aberdeen University, but they took a very long time before sending the acceptance letter, by that time i had gone ahead with Swansea University.
  • I like the fact that Swansea University had a fast reply. I received a letter within 15-20 days of applying. They even offered me an unconditional letter, although I had already planned for my IELTS and cleared it. IELTS minimum score should be 7 average and i had a score of 8 so i was good to go! the whole admission process was simple and clear, but the connection issue was a struggle. its better to connect over emails as they respond faster than trying international calls which cost a lot more and are ineffective!
  • I applied for January intake. Factors that influenced me was mainly time, I did not want to wait till September of next year as the process takes a while. it took me 2-3 months just to do my research of universities, the process of applying, giving IELTS and clearing, sending Statement of Purpose to each university i apply to and getting references from work and university.

Faculty

6

  • The faculty to student ratio in my class was not good! we had a class of over 100 and only 1 professor teaching to such a huge mass, so it was difficult to give personal attention, they could have split the class into smaller groups!
  • The faculty members did not assist anyone in finding any part or full time jobs, although they were hiring mentors instead. i liked my leadership professor the most, she was teaching very good, very friendly and practical and i enjoyed all her classes.

Campus Life

8

  • My university has 2 campuses. one is the Singleton campus and the other is the Bay campus. both are situated on the beach and have spectacular views. they both have all the facilities like libraries, sports etc.
  • Many campus festivals take place in my university, like the freshers, summer ball, etc. there are plenty of extracurricular activities such as cultural events going on throughout the year. we have hindu society, tamil society etc and celebrate holi, diwali etc.

Part Time Jobs

  • Teaching assistant and Research assistant roles are really few as professors prefer PHD students for that. The pay range is the same as minimum pay- 11.44 per hour. but there are plenty of other on campus and off campus jobs, such as working in the IT help desk, or the library or the cafes in the university. they also pay the minimum pay of 11.44 per hour. Also my favourite will be the student ambassadors as the pay is 12 per hour and also you get to network with many people, learn more about the university and get paid as well! The maximum hours allowed to work is 20 hours per week. its not that difficult to get a job on campus, you just have to be consistent with a good CV
  • students usually can earn upto 12,000 per year if they work 20 hours a week. the most important part is making the CV as per the UK guidelines. also indeed is the best platform to apply for part time jobs. it is easy to get a job but you have to be consistent. Also your application process should be completed and then there will be an interview round. so each application can take about 3 weeks time before getting an answer.

Placement

4

  • The percentage has gone down due to new UK laws. The average salary will be between 30-37k a year. its not easy getting a full time job in your field immediately upon graduation.
  • Networking is the key, there are no campus placements. Major companies include ICON. University do host many career fairs so do attend that and network with people in your field.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • I used facebook groups to connect to university students and get accomodation in Swansea. apart from that i looked in Zoopla, sparerooms and other sites. I had plenty of options from university accommodation to student accommodations but i prefer house of multiple occupants HMO properties, they are like standalone houses with 4 bedroom or 5 bedroom where everyone is either a student or young professionals with shared kitchen.
  • That gave me the opportunity to connect to a diverse culture of people. My accommodation was nearby, walking distance but i used to take the bus when necessary. My monthly rent was 450 to 500 pounds, including electricity bills, water bills, gas bills, internet and everything.
  • The challenges you face are scammers so be careful and verify before confirming and sending money. as much as possible, try sending a friend or someone to physically go and see the house on your behalf. try to take accommodation near to the campus so you can walk over when required. most indian students stay nearby.

Exams

  • So I applied for a Masters in Public health and health promotion. For me, IELTS is the required in my field. Even though that matters, like i was given an unconditional letter so they did not ask for my IELTS but I had given it anyway.
  • Documents such as Statement of Purpose and Letter of recommendation are also required, as necessary. CV is not required. I did not go through any interviews for my field.

Fees

  • The total fees in my field was 20500 pounds. I paid half of the amount before joining university and the other half before the beginning of the second semester. the fees are charged semester wise.
  • I did not take accommodation from university but stayed nearby and used the university bus which was quite affordable. My monthly expenses were roughly 500 for rent(including bills), 200 on food, 50 on transportation and 15 for gym and societies.

Scholarship

  • Yes i received a bursary scholarship, it is for international students from eligible countries. the award amount was 3000 pounds.
  • Yes, many people receive it, you just have to inquire about it. i sent them an email asking about any scholarships that I was eligible for and they responded with that. but have a look at the university website, many scholarships and their criteria are mentioned there.
