Course Curriculum

10

  • You can expect medium to high level of difficulty. Course are design mostly in conceptual basis. you will have two mid terms in which they will provide the conceptual question and you have to sumbit it within a day of deadline applying your brain. This will be the open book exam. in the end term you will have the exam like most of the indian colleges also do have. this will be 2 and half hour exam. In a day you will have mostly 2 classes each 2 hours. In a course students have to opt the minimum required subjects to successfully complete the course and college will provide the time for that particular subject and venue of the class. However a student can attend optional subject lectures also. In some subjects you may have 100 of students and in some less students may be 30-40 depends on how many students opted for that particular subject. In my course 4 indian students were there.

Admission Experience

  • Universities I applied for:
    • 1. Southampton University - Got selected
    • 2. Swansea University - Got selected
  • I applied to only two colleges as for Maritime Law, as per my research these two colleges in UK were the best. As I received confirmation from both colleges, I picked Swansea university because of the review given by the alumini and even it was evident that Swansea is doing good in the field of Maritime because of the great faculty they manage to have there.

  • Chose Swansea University as I wanted to do the LLM in Maritime Law and for Maritime course Swansea is considered as one of the best choices in the world as the faculty in this courses are outstanding there. For few Sothampton university is the choice, however as per my R&D that time Swansea was better than southampton for Maritime because of the faculty out there. Also, as the Swansea is small city, the whole city will give you the welcoming vibe as you will meet all over the city the swansea students.

  • Courses start from September. So, students must start the application process as early as possible, say from Feb-Mar as it takes whole 1-2 months for getting the acceptance letter. and after that to plan how to pay the fees and all. Course mostly get completed by May/June. After that students got busy with their dissertation work. For dissertation students get 2-3 months timeline and students are expected to write an original work as college have strict plagiarism policy. Once the dissertation is submitted, within a month by November you will get the results and mostly they will do the convocation ceremony by December.

Faculty

10

  • Each subject will have the different faculty. In some subject you can expect 100 of students and in some less students. It totally depends on how many students opted for which subject. For example, in my course subject like Charter party and marine Insurance has 60-70 students while subjects like arbitration had 25-30 students. The teaching method was very nice, in a week you will have only one lecture of 2 hours where they will teach the concepts and after that you will have that week for self study to cover up the lectures of your own. Apart from lectures, they will organise doubt classes, which you can take advantage of. Apart from that, you can approach the concerned faculty in their chamber for any guidance or help.

Campus Life

8

  • There are two campuses based on the different courses. Each campuses have the library and the sports facilities. Colleges society will plan the cultural events like Holi, Halloween etc which students will enjoy. Also, as per the interest of the students you can approach the concern society to get more involved. During my time I had a good time in Holi as Indian society organised a good holi meet.

Part Time Jobs

  • On campus part time jobs have not much options but off campus you can avail few options by registering yourself to the agencies who recruit for the part time. You can work upto 20 hours a week as part time jobs. Part time jobs like if there will be soccer match in city, agency recruit some for that and for many more events. Securing jobs on campus could be possible but you have to follow up more and more there.
  • Sometimes when you feel to work you can register yourself in the agencies. There are many agencies where you can enroll yourself. and they will provide you with the list of work and timings and as per your schedule you can opt for the job. Generally they pay 9-10 pounds per hour. Minimum 3 hours of work would be there. In one time genrally you can make 30-35 pounds. So if you will work in weekends for 2 days then you can make upto 70 pounds.

Placement

6

  • This will be little frustrating and difficult to secure as it is bit difficult in securing the job visa. however, if you will be able to make connection then there could be chance of securing the same. But this will be a challenging task. There is one route to explore more options if you can clear SQL then more chances would be there. Apart from that try to secure short term internship which can help in securing the job. However even securing the internship will be challenege.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • You can opt for on-campus accommodation from the college site provided by the college, which costs around 600-800 pounds per month. However, you can always opt for the private accommodation which will be cheaper than the college accommodation. Benefit of college accommodation is that you will be with the college students and it will be more easy to make connections.

Exams

  • Either IELTS/TOEFL will suffice. Student have the option to go either IELTS or TOEFL, most of students go for IELTS as comparatively students find that easy than TOEFL.
  • Apart from that during applying SOP, LOR and CV, there three will be required. One good SOP is required. In SOP try to build the structure in such a way that when readers reads it, it looks like a story in a chronological way. LOR from 2 respected person and ofcourse a good CV.

Fees

  • Tution fees - Near about 12000 pounds
Hostel fee - Near about 6000-7000 pounds/ you can opt to stay in private accommodation, that you will find easily there as lots of property vendor available there and it will be cheaper than the college hostel.
  • Tution fees you have to pay maximum in two go; however hostel fees you can pay as per your wishes but ofcourse always in advance

Scholarship

  • During admission as per the SOP submitted by the student, college itself provide bursaries of some amount. if the SOP is well enough then student can expect from 2000-3000 pounds bursaries deducted from the tution fees. However, You always have the option to ask the university if they have any kind of scholarships. Also, there is chevening scholarship which can be availed, details of which have to be researched by the student as I witnessed some of the international student had that.
