Course Curriculum

10

  • Level of Difficulty is medium and courses are more focused on Practical or Industry knowledge rather than theoretical knowledge.
  • Positive aspects of my course are the way modules are organized and the teaching methodology. Negative aspect of my course, it is fast- paced and sometimes it is difficult for students from Non programming backgrounds to understand the concept.
  • You have one lecture and one practical scheduled everyday from Monday to Friday. In Newcastle University there is a career team which helps you in preparing for jobs and there is University job portal where all different jobs were listed.

Admission Experience

  • I applied to the following Universities: Exeter University, Newcastle University, Heriott Watt University, Loughborough University, University of Stirling, Liverpool University, Portsmouth University, Swansea University, Strathclyde University.
  • I received confirmed admission from all above except Liverpool and Loughborough.
  • I received rejection from Liverpool and Loughborough University. Liverpool's rejection was my undergraduate study specialization. I completed my undergraduate studies in Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science and Liverpool University wanted students from non-cs background for MSc Data Science.
  • Newcastle University was my first choice for the MSc Data Science program because of its modules, its membership in the prestigious Russell Group, and its location in Newcastle upon Tyne, one of the friendliest cities in the United Kingdom.
  • For admission you have to start your application from as early as September and you will get your response within 2-4 weeks from the date of your application. You can apply for an English waiver through MOI(Medium of Instruction) or through IELTS with a score of 6.5. Process is simple: you should apply with all your academic transcripts and experience certificate if you have any and Statement of Purpose.
  • I applied for September Intake as September intake is one of the major intakes in the UK. University of Russell Group take admission only in September intake. January intake is also open for students in universities other than Russel group.
  • I applied in September 2023 and received confirmation within 2 weeks of my application. You receive a conditional letter from University and after completing the remaining formalities like English and Deposit for confirmation, you receive unconditional offer letter.

Faculty

10

  • Average Number of students in my class is 50. There are around 20 Indians enrolled in my course in Newcastle University.
  • In Newcastle University there is a system of personal tutoring apart from daily lectures which is 1 to 10 in ratio. You can discuss your doubts and concerns related to your academics with your personal tutor.
  • Teaching methodology is more focused on practical rather than theoretical.

Campus Life

10

  • Newcastle University has three campuses in Newcastle, Malaysia and Singapore.
  • All facilities are available in my campus such as the library, medical sports and others. Events are organized all over the year. There are societies for your choice of interest and you can participate in any societies like chess, dancing, football, coding or photography. All events are organized by groups of students.

Part Time Jobs

  • As I mentioned university has a career team and portal which will help you in applying for part-time or full-time opportunities. Like Indian Universities there is no direct placement which is organized by UK University but there are career teams which will help you in drafting your resumes and preparing for interviews. Pay range for above roles is somewhere between £11-£20 per hour. As an international student you are allowed to work for 20 hours per week. It is difficult to secure a job in the UK.
  • Indians prefer working in all areas like restaurants, delivery jobs, university jobs and others. You can work in retail shops or in University as an admin. It is difficult to get a job as you have to go through a process like application interview and then selection. You can approach any stores in person or you can apply on their websites. Application takes time.

Placement

10

  • As I mentioned, like Indian universities there is no direct placement and you have to search and apply on your own.
  • Newcastle University has a career team and career portal which will help you in the application process and process of applying.
  • There are several job fairs organised by universities from time to time where different companies participate. Major companies are Deloitte and Accenture.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • I opted for Private Student Accommodation. I found my accommodation through Amber student accommodation portal for international students.
  • I am paying £640 a month for a basic studio in my accommodation.
  • I didn't face any challenge securing my accommodation. It's an easy process and there are several websites through which you can book your accommodation and apart from private accommodation you can also go for university accommodation. My accommodation is just 2km away from my campus.

Exams

  • Newcastle University accepts IELTS for English. Minimum requirement is 6.5 overall in IELTS.
  • List of Documents required for application are: Academic Transcript, Statement of Purpose, One academic and one employer reference letter if you have experience or one academic reference letter for freshers, Passport.
  • For my course MSc Data Science there was no interview but the interview depends on your selected course like if you have selected a course like Master's in Business Administration you may have to give an interview.

Fees

  • For my course the total fees was £30600 for 2024 batch which include 1500 as a confirmation fee.
  • University accommodation starts from £98 per week and it depends on your choice of accommodation.
  • You can submit your fees in 3 installments or in one time.
  • It is advisable to walk as all locations are nearby and to save transportation cost but if you choose to travel by bus then single journey cost is £2 and £6 for full day. Apart from that £80 per month needed for other expenses.

Scholarship

  • Yes, Newcastle University offers country specific scholarships and the Vice Chancellor Excellence Scholarship. For 2024 batch country specific scholarship was £4000 and Vice Chancellor Scholarship was 50% or 100% of your tuition fees and it was awarded on merit. There are other scholarships too which you can find on University websites.
  • I received £4000 as scholarship and 2% on remaining fees as I paid my fees in one time.
  • Yes, one of my batchmates has received the Vice Chancellor Excellence Scholarship. There are 52 seats for the Vice Chancellor's Scholarship each year. It can vary depending on your academic year.
