What Students Say
Likes
- Flexibility to work alongside studying.
- More emphasis on individual learning than lectures
- Rarely any exams
Dislikes
- Morning lectures
- The campus is so big that it is spread across the city which for some courses might mean travelling back and forth
- Takes too long to release exam results
Course Curriculum
- It is not difficult at all. It is the perfect blend of theory and real life practice. Positive aspects of the course is that it teaches how to manage time efficiently for yourself as individual learning is 70% and lecture learning is only 30%
- I believe allowing that space in a students life can either motivate them or demotivate them. For me it acted as a motivator because I was able to take part in extra curricular activities.
- Negative aspects of my course would be the number of people in one class. There are 200-300 people in one class which may sometimes mean lacking individual focus.
- There are barely any Indian students in my class. It is just me and one guy. Bit in finance courses and MBA there are a lot more Indian students.
Admission Experience
- University of Bath- Accepted, Newcastle University- Accepted, City University London- Rejected, Warwick University- Rejected. I believe I was rejected due to a-lot of applicants having better percentages. The time taken for Newcastle and Bath was not that time-taking. I got an offer within 2 months of applying.
- I chose Newcastle over the others because it is a lively city and everyone is very friendly. Moreover, since it is a student city you get a lot of student benefits. Newcastle has amazing nightlife and safety. Unlike other mainstream cities, it is not always busy and rushing, it is more self-paced. The process at Newcastle was really simple and easy, I applied through UCAS and heard back to send further details in 2 weeks and then I got a conditional letter. I gave the IELTS test and also scored well in English which they were basically looking for. The eligibility criteria for my course was any score above 70% and IELTS 5 bands. The overall experience has been excellent in terms of application.
- I applied for the September intake as it was the best one for me as I didn’t want a long break after my schooling. I wanted to jump into university straight away.
- Initially, I received a conditional offer within 1-2 months. The condition was the results of 12 grade should be more than 80 as my predicted grade that I submitted was 90%.
- Post receiving the results I emailed the university with the mark-sheet attached and then I got my unconditional offer. Within 2 weeks my CAS was also sent over.
Faculty
- The quality of interaction with lecturers is not very great initially. Although, they structure their teaching in such a way that barely any students face problems. However, in case of an issue I felt that lecturers and module leaders have been really supportive and made sure I was on board with the curriculum.
- The course is well enough to prepare me for a job. Although some modules have theory, their assignments are all about putting theory into practice. NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY has multiple sources within the campus that helps in securing a part time or full tome jobs such as Careers service, Mycareer & Guidance appointments.
- Joanne, a career consultant is the one member I admire the most. She helped me secure a part time role and spent a lot of time helping me with my CV and preparing me for Interviews. She is very easy to talk to and makes me feel motivated all the time.
Campus Life
- Newcastle has a Medical campus, Business campus, Engineering campus, Arts& Media campus. Business campus is located in NE4
- The university offers library services 24/7, an exquisite gym and sport facilities. The sports building is located in NE2. However, the medical services are not that great as their process is a bit time consuming and requires patience.
- As an Indian international, the Indian society offers a diwali ball every year which a major fest outside campus. In addition, we have lot of latino fests, freshers fair, freebies fair etc
- We have 2 societies relating to indian culture. The one in which I am involved is HASS (Hindu &Sikh society)
Part Time Jobs
- Most part time jobs available off campus include waitressing and bartending.
- University provides jobs on campus and internships. These are short term jobs with a fixed period contract. Maximum hours allowed during term time are 20. During holidays, we are allowed to work up to 40 hours a week.
- Jobs on campus include setting up stalls in fairs. Promoting a company or a new scheme by the university to other students. It might also be something like organising events in your accommodation like pizza nights etc
- It is initially difficult to get an on campus job but with the right motivation and patience it is achievable.
- National minimum wage is around 9 per hour. However jobs on campus pay 13 per hours and most companies pay atleast 10 p/h. Initially it is very tough to get a job but constantly applying is what gets anyone through the process and it becomes a lot more easier afterwards due to having experience in UK.
- The usual process for applying part time jobs is making sure you have the NI number which you can apply for after getting here. Post that, you have to register on UK government website and get a share code which proves your right to work to employers. After doing that and finding the right job, it will be all good to go. The first stage includes a screening of CV’s and second includes an interview. Students should take guidance as much as they can for their first interviews.
Placement
- The average salary before tax is 22000 for a business management student. It hard for international students to get a graduate job but it is not impossible.
- You can do a placement year after the second year of university which is a full time role and is paid.
- The university educates and guides on this matter of securing a placement. However, it is a hassle for international students because it is not guaranteed and all depends on the amount of hard work put in by yourself.
- Johnson&Johnson and BMW have hired alot of students from our university.
Accommodation
-
University helped me with the accommodation in first year. However I found out that if you book the same accommodations privately it is a lot cheaper. I always looked at unihomes.co.uk. My current monthly rent is 620 however it was 700 in the first year.
-
I didn't find it challenging to find accommodation as a fresher because the university help was sufficient. My accommodation is a 10 min walk from the university
Exams
- IELTS is enough for Newcastle university.
- I had to attach the following documents: LOR, Marksheets, Predicted Grades for 12th, SOP
- No, an interview was not a part of my application and is not a part for the business school students. However, Arts & Media students at Newcastle have to give Interviews to qualify for their courses.
- My admission was solely from UCAS
Fees
-
Received a 4k pounds scholarship from every year's tuition fee.
The fee structure was as follows: 20000 for programme
7000 for accommodation
400 per month for living -
The fees is charged through an online portal. It can be submitted for one year directly or be split in for two semesters. Transportation costs are not much for Newcastle if you live in the city centre, every place is within walking distance. Other regular expenses like groceries cost me around $ 30 per week.
Scholarship
- Newcastle University gives scholarships for every course. Almost ALL International students with decent marks are able to get the 4k scholarship called the Vice Chancellor’s scholarship.
- All of my international friends from India and other countries received this scholarship as well. It is deducted from every year’s tuition fee automatically.
- 90% of the international students have received this scholarship.
