Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • Review from university alumni has been impressive and my study counsellor mentioned that UCLan has many Indian students and there is a huge community of diversity and inclusivity at the University of Central Lancashire.
  • I liked the location as it is close to Manchester, and there are trains available to major cities, which is ideal for travelling.

Tips to enhance your application

  • Please look into different documents online, understand their skeleton and write one of your own. Please refrain from using ChatGPT or copying from online sources, as it is considered plagiarism.
  • You may use Word spell check and Grammarly to review your document. Ensure it is free of spelling errors and that you display your interest and passions in your CV and SOP, you may also write about your hobbies and extracurricular activities to demonstrate enthusiasm and proactiveness.
  • Get a recommendation letter from people who taught or supervised you and inform them that they might be contacted by the university for additional information, if required. It is your story and you know it better than anyone else, so maintain authenticity and all the best for your studies.

Admission Experience

  • I choose the UK because of the excellent research scope in the country and the country's reputation for exceptional academic standards. I was further influenced by the city of Preston, which is based in North West England.
  • It is one of the most affordable cities in England, with a wide Indian community. The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) provided a range of courses in science, engineering, management, medicine, etc. UCLan has an amazing support system consisting of dedicated teams for student support, academic support, international student support, career support, and well-being support teams.
  • UCLan is the first university in the UK to have dedicated well-being and mental health support through student ambassadors. Because of all these teams, there is a requirement for student ambassadors and good part-time opportunities for students.
  • They also have a separate student union wing, where students elect their own leaders to discuss and resolve student issues. The staff at the student union are very friendly and helpful.
  • I have completed my course with a distinction grade and received the Dean's Award for excellence in academic performance. Additionally, I have volunteered as a course rep and inspiring project leader with the students union.
  • I learnt a lot from the university, and I had a strong support system from my lectures, staff, library systems, and my fellow students. I have excelled in my studies during the adverse conditions during the covid-19 lockdown.
  • The university experience has helped me in my academics as well as overall personality development. I started working immediately after completing my course. I highly recommend studying at the University of Central Lancashire.
  • They organise many events for students, and they also have good opportunities for part-time work as well. I completed my MBA from UCLan in 2022.

Class Schedule

9

  • There were about classes on two to three days per week. Classes were based in the morning session or afternoon session, and each session was up to 2 hours per module.
  • Some classes were held in seminar halls with more than 100 students, but regular workshops were held for students ranging from 20 to 30 students per lecturer in regular classrooms.
  • My course has a mix of students from different nationalities, including a majority of Indians, Nigerians, Southeast Asians, and East Asians. There were no home students in my course, as many home students preferred only undergraduate courses and MBA is not popular among graduates based in the UK.

Faculty

10

  • They were very helpful. The student-faculty culture is very pleasant and approachable. Students can refer to faculty by their name and there is no need to call them sir or ma'am. I would not like to name any faculty but some of the faculty used to organise additional support workshops to help students with various issues.
  • The faculty sometimes extend help even beyond their work hours if student needs help. The faculty is sensitive towards international students and the cultural differences and adapts their teaching style to students needs. They not only deliver lectures to students but also support and mentor students for overall personal development and show direction for career growth. My mentor is also a staff member at UCLan and has helped me even after my course by providing me job references.

Campus Life

9

  • UCLan has 5 campuses based in Preston, Burnley, Westlakes, Cyprus, and London. The university has an excellent infrastructure of many campus buildings, a library consisting of physical books and a computer lab, science labs, and teaching rooms.
  • They have a huge sports arena, a free gym for all students, and a separate student union building. The student centre and library have many places to study and have meetings. The student centre has facilities like student support, a well-being team, a careers team, a rooftop terrace garden, etc. The university conducts many events, such as welcome week, careers fair, and many fun activities by the student union.
  • I would recommend going through the university website and the student union's website to understand more about student life and events at the university.

Part Time Jobs

  • Most of the Indian students work in universities, student unions, off-license stores, and restaurants, and if the student has a good skill set they are also offered niche jobs in their stream of expertise. Students can secure jobs with hard work and the right networking. There are lots of opportunities for students to work in the city of Preston and nearby cities as well.
  • I also worked part-time with the student support and careers team. My university experience has shaped me into a strong, independent, and confident woman.
  • There are many part-time jobs on and off campus. Students can approach the careers team for advice on CVs and job applications. The careers website will have vacancies for full-time and part-time job opportunities enlisted.
  • Students are usually offered the minimum UK wage, which is £11.44 per hour. Students are permitted to work only 20 hours per week; this is more than enough to cater for student living expenses.

Placement

8

  • I completed my course in MBA with work-based learning. After completion of my course, I secured a job at University of Central Lancashire and worked as a project administrator from September 2022 to December 2023 with a starting salary of £23500 per annum.
  • Later, I have secured a role with the School of Medicine and Dentistry as a Professionalism Support Officer from October 2023 to June 2024 with a salary of £25700 per annum. Currently I am a freelancing consultant and entrepreneur, based in India.
