Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • Tuition fees were affordable among the two and UCLan also had a provision for a placement year, which enabled them to gain valuable industry experience.
  • The proximity of Preston to two industrial centres-Manchester and Liverpool—helped in understanding the requirements of the industry and in selecting a niche.

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

Reason for Rejection

  • The university had closed its intake for the September session.
  • Moreover, the course duration was only one year, which would have been pretty intensive for a job search after studies.
  • Also, the accommodation facilities were far away from the university, which affected the overall budget.

Tips to enhance your application

  • The admission document, i.e., the Statement of Purpose, should strongly align with our requirements.
  • The course we undertake and our previous experience in industry or academia should help us in writing a strong statement of purpose.
  • Moreover, developing key skills, like curiosity to learn, is greatly appreciated.

Admission Experience

  • I chose UCLAN, which is based in the northwest region of England in the United Kingdom, which is renowned for its academic legacy spanning several centuries.
  • Moreover, it was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, which had transformed everyday life tremendously.
  • I chose UCLan as it had higher league rankings for its business and management courses among similar universities.
  • The location was a cosmopolitan mix so that you don't feel away from home.
  • The university promoted several leadership development programmes, which helped in developing academic rigour.

Class Schedule

8

  • There were usually 3 class days in a week, making up to 18 hours per week. The class timing varies depending on the semester.
  • One semester we had classes from 9 am to 1 pm; the other we had class from 1 pm to 6 pm.
  • Some of the modules had a class size of 10-15 students for the workshop session.
  • Classes in the lecture theatre would often have students from the whole MBA cohort of 150-odd students.
  • Roughly 20 hours on a weekly basis would help to manage the assignments properly.

Faculty

8

  • The ratio of 15:1 was there for workshop sessions where we could easily interact with our lectures.
  • Moreover, the lessons were already uploaded in the Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment, which helped us to access class recordings, PowerPoint power point presentation and research papers beforehand so we could have an engaging discussion.
  • Some faculty were very fond of reflecting on our academic drawbacks and highlighted changes in wording, which helped to my advantage.
  • They usually suggest a few industries but it depends on a personal level to make it count.

Campus Life

9

  • Our university had two campuses- one in Preston and the other in Burnley.
  • Library sports were easily accessible on the campus.
  • I lived on the Preston campus, which was bustling with students.
  • Indian society was popular among our cohort, where events such as Bollywood night or food fest events would happen, which we used to relish.

Part Time Jobs

  • For our cohort, most of the students were working in the health care sector as care assistants or in industrial warehouse jobs like Amazon delivery sorting, the food industry sector or the retail sector.
  • The hourly pay rate was 10 pounds an hour and would increase based on holiday pay or night special rate. It was initially difficult.
  • The university had limited job roles offered, such as student ambassador. They usually allowed students to work 20 hours per week for term time.
  • The hourly wage was roughly 10 pounds an hour. It was not easy to get on-campus jobs initially, as they were already filled with students and would tell ad-hoc availability.

Placement

8

  • Most of the cohort was into some job role within 6 months but not necessarily in the subjects they studied in university but in some shortage occupation jobs in the healthcare sector or hospitality sector.
  • The students getting purely management roles were scanty, as the companies often prefer students with prior industrial experience.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • Although online platforms were there, they charged exorbitant prices. I had a family member who was abroad and had some knowledge of the house rates so it helped to get a reasonable accommodation near to university premises.
  • Some challenges initially faced were that most of the housemates were international students from other countries so it took some time to get familiar.
