What Students Say
Likes
- SRM has a modern, well-maintained campus with high-tech labs, massive central library, and a strong wifi connection throughout the campus. Almost all buildings provide elevation and air conditioner.
- Almost every professor is a PhD holder, and most faculty members are supportive, approachable, and well-versed in their subject areas.
- From fests, hackathons, and clubs to international programs, there is no shortage of exposure. The lifestyle is vibrant, with students from across the country and lots of clubs and co-curricular options.
Dislikes
- The fees of SRM is on the very expensive side, especially for CSE branch. The hostel fees is very high too making it unaffordable for most people in country. The ROI is not great either for majority students.
- While CSE gets good placements, core branches like Biotech, Civil, and Mechanical don't recieve equal placement attention or package levels. Most of the students leave college unplaced. Even for CSE, most students are placed in mass recruiter company
- The batch sizes are huge, competition can be intense, and sometimes individual attention or help from faculty might get delayed.
Course Curriculum Overview
Choosing CSE in the current decision is wise as the world revolves around computer. There is high job prospect in this field, can also get a good salary or foreign placement opportunity easily in comparison to other courses. The curriculum of SRM is good. They have extra bootcamps to connect you to the real world applications. The college has high exposure, that expands one's knowledge and competitive nature. I personally feel that the curriculum is good and does not require any major changes. The cycle tests are conducted in an interval of 1 month. The semester exam are held at the end of the semester.
Internships Opportunities
The college offers various internship options throughout the year with different roles and stipend. The faculty advisors guide the students on the various internships going on. These internships also plays an important role in the placement matrix.
Placement Experience
College offers 100% placement to CSE students. Students are eligible for college placements from 7th semester. Over 1000 companies visit the campus and over 3000 offers are made. Highest package offered is 60 lpa, average package is 8 lpa. Everyone gets placed, around 400 students get jobs of over 12lpa, some remaining good students grab a decent job of around 10 lpa, rest get placed in mass recruiting companies and get around 4 lpa. If I can land some decent job, I would probably take it or maybe go for an MBA degree.
Fees and Financial Aid
For CSE core and CSE with specialisation in AI-ML branches at SRM Kattankulathur, the yearly tuition fee is Rs.475000, for four years, making a total of Rs.1900000. For other CSE specialisations (like cybersecurity, datascience, etc), the yearly tuition fee is Rs.375000. For non CSE branches such as ECE, EEE, Biotech, the fee is Rs.275000 per year. These fees remain the same for all four years of the B.Tech program and do not increase annually. There are no extra fees apart from the semester exam fees. Components like caution fee, registration fee, development fee, and lab charges are already included in the yearly tuition fees. Scholarship Details: Students can apply for scholarships based on their SRMJEEE rank(under 1000) or JEE Mains rank(under 10000). Depending on their rank, a scholarship of upto 75% off on tuition fee for the first year can be availed. However to retain the scholarship in subsequent years, students must maintain a 9.5+ CGPA each year.
Campus Life
SRM has everything a person needs to offer: 1. The largest SRM cultural fest is MILAN, typically held in February or March. Another important fest is AARUSH, typically held in September or October. Various events, techfests, cultural fests are organised throughout the year. 2. SRM has a huge Central library, it is three storeyed, offering books, journals, research papers, and magazines of all variety. 3. All the classes have smart boards and air conditioners. 4. SRM has huge grounds, playarea for every possible sport, a huge swimming pool as well. 5. SRM has over 40 clubs. Student can really find somewhere they belong in here.
Hostel Facilities
Hostels are not fine. They are too pricey for what they offer. Maids come for cleaning regularly though, but they do not understand Hindi and English, are too loud and mannerless. Wardens and SROs in the girls hostel are a nightmare. They would never give you outing permissions. You literally will have to beg them after video calls from parents too. The meals are fine and clean.
Admission
Well, SRM is where i got CSE in the first round of counselling itself, and since it is a prestigeous institution with 100% placement under CSE, I was satisfied with the college. I also got a very good rank in wbjee, but the quality of education is falling tremendously here in bengal, the crime rates are getting high too. I also scored well in ComedK, but the expenditure of Bangalore life is as high as SRM fees, so, practically it was better for me to choose SRM. I didn't get selected in VIT for CSE. My rank was ot great, nor was my preparation. One can get admission in SRM through their entrance examination SRMJEEE. Someone with 60% aggregate in higher secondary is eligible to sit for this examination. Seat allocated is based on ranks and seat availbility, which changes every year.
Faculty
The faculty-to-student ratio is around 1:50, especially in popular branches like CSE. Most faculty members are approachable, qualified and helpful. I really liked Miss Sivakami, our Chemistry faculty - she explains concepts well and is kind to students. Another favourite of mine is Mr. Vijayakumar Reddy, the Japanese Faculty. His teaching style is very engaging and easy to follow. I haven't disliked any faculty member so far, but some lab assistants can be rude or even behave in a biased way, which does not feel right. We have 3 cycle tests every semester which are fairly easy and scoring. They cover the 60% weightage of total 100 per semester,i.e, the internals. The final semester exam is also manageable, but conducted with very strict supervision ( no tolerance for even minor issues ). It is out of 75 marks, which gets converted to 40 marks. Together they form a total of 100, which decides the grade. The CGPA is then calculated based on these grades.
Interview Experience
There is only 1 exam, i.e, SRMJEEE, it is MCQ based exam and has no negative marking. There's no other tests, or group discussion or interviews to get admitted in SRM. The preparation is basically the basics of your 11th and 12th PCM or PCM subjects, and english.
Night Life
Night life is not great, especially for hostellers. Chennai is 30 kms away from the college campus, making the night life really boring. Hostels provide gym, there is a lot of food option inside college at reasonable price. Everything shuts down by 7 PM. Hostel in timing for girls is 6:30 PM, while for boys it is 9:30 PM. The area is not very safe for night outs. Some nearby friendly places include GST foodstreet, Aerohub, etc
