Dislikes
- Placement opportunities for ECE and core departments are quite low , almost all placements are in the IT field .
- Administrative processes were slow and often require frequent follow ups due to a due student population.
- Hostel food is average with limited options and the rooms are not cleaned properly .
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose this program because it offered a good mix of core electronics and trending technologies like AI and embedded systems. Some parts of the syllabus like Electromagnetic Theory and Control systems, are outdated. There's a need of more hands-on training with tools like MATLAB, Python and HDL, Exams followed a standard format of 60% internal, which is computed on the basis of Class tests, assignments and projects and the rest 40% is computed by the final end sem scores.
Fees and Financial Aid
The yearly tuition fees for the students in my college is 2.5 lakhs and the total course fees is 10 lakhs. For the 1st year, in addition to the tuition fees, a non-refundable fee of Rs 10,000 was taken from me. Students are admitted with a valid score in SRMJEEE, on the basis of which high performing students are also offered some scholarships. For SC/ST students, while there is no separate reduced fee structure, but they can avail state and central government scholarships.
Campus Life
Campus life in SRM is great with a balance in academics and extracurriculars . The University hosts 2 major fests - "Milan" during trhe month of march and "Aarush" conducted in the month of September . The Central Library is spacious and well stocked with over 1.5 lakh books, academis journals, research papers, e-books and subscriptions to databases like IEEE and Springer. Classrooms are digitally enabled , with smart boards , projectors , Wi-Fi , and cofatable seating . SRM offers strong support for sports and extracurriculars with facilities like cricket ground , indoor badminton courts , football ground , gym and a stadium . Threre are over 50 student run clubs like Dbug labs , SRMkzilla , GSDC , Microsoft ambassador club , Coding ninjas , Robocon , Rudra etc .
Admission
When I was applying for private colleges, I considered reputed colleges like VIT, SRM, SSN and Amrita University. I chose SRMIST KTR because of its location advantage(close to Chennai), well-established campus, strong placements, and flexible academics. I couldn't get into government colleges like Anna University or SSN due to the high cutoff under the TNEA counselling, since I came through the All indian quota, it was even more competitive. The admission process in SRM is conducted for various B.Tech programmes mainly through the rank in the SRMJEEE exam. Higher-ranked students are eligible for scholarships and fee waivers.
Faculty
The faculty to student ratio in the ECE department is approx 1:20 . while classes were significantly large , students can approach professors during office hours or after class , especially thpose involved in research or project based learning . I like faculty like Dr Sukanya Ghoah, she has very good in Digital electronics and VLSI. I also like Dr. T, Saminathan for signals and systems for his interactive teaching style and deep conceptual clarity. We have a final exam or end sem for 40% and rest internal we have 60% which is calculated based on our performance in the cycle tests , assignments and project works . Overall the course curriculum is quite industry relevant which is updated regularly wirh some outdated subjects .
Night Life
The nightlife in and around SRM is quite low since its a residential campus with a mix of hostellers and day scholars , the environment is safe and moderately active in the evenings. The library is open till 11:00 pm but on holidays and weekends , it closes around 8:00 pm . The hostel entry time for girls is 7:00 pm while for bys it is 9:00 pm . There's security on every hostel with boimetric attendance system . Inside the campus , popular hangout spots include Tech park , Java or food court and the Milkha singh stadium . Outside the campus , the potheri area is quite lively with Cafes , restrurants , street food .
