What Students Say
Likes
- Campus Size. The campus is huge, with an incredible amount of buildings, and ample seating. Multiple cafeterias for eating.
- Range of Courses: All the basic engineering degrees are offered by Anna University. In addition, niche fields like Printing Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, etc are also available for enrollment
- Availability of Sports Facilities: Some of the facilities are: 2 Basketball Courts, 1 Volleyball court, 2 Tennis courts, 1 football field, 2 gyms, etc...
Dislikes
- Bureaucracy: There's no real control over how professors interact with students and their marks. If a professor doesn't like you, they can fail you in the subject and there's nothing you can do about it. Typical of a government college though.
- Infrastructure: While Anna university is supposed to have the best infrastructure in TN Government colleges, it's really not the best at all, when it comes to new equipment.
- Power Cuts, faulty Water supply. Most Water coolers don't work, and the electricity is off for a considerable portion of the day, forcing students to stew in the heat.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is not bad at all. It's not entirely relevant, but for IT, it provides us all the knowledge we will need to be incredibly good at our jobs. We learn about both the hardware and software aspects, and it helps us understand computational logic a lot better. Exams are timed well. They aren't too difficult, but the marking is inconsistent
Internships Opportunities
Some examples of companies are: - Verizon - Accenture - Caterpillar - Amazon - Temenos - Barclays Stipends are varied. They can go from 20,000 to 1L per month, as a stipend for summer internships. Usually the procedure is: - Enrolling on CUIC - Adding your academic details, resumés, etc. - Applying for internships that you're eligible for Then, there's an online round, then a technical round, then interviews. There can be any number of technical rounds, which are offline and face to face. There are various requirements, most companies however, want the following criteria to be satisfied - No Current Arrears - CGPA Above 7.5
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for summer internship placements from the 5th semester. They are eligible for campus placements from the 7th semester. There were over a 200 companies that visited. IT and CS have a 100% placement rate.
Fees and Financial Aid
Plenty of scholarships for First Graduate, Female Students, PwD, People from an agricultural background, People with income issues, and for Reservations. Tuition fees are between 12000 and 20000, based on fees. There are added fees for examinations (around 1000 for each semester)
Campus Life
There are a lot of fests. The main 2 events are: ENANTRA (Entrepreneurship Mantra) in odd semesters, and Kurukshetra(South India's best Technical Fest) in even semesters. There's bands and a whole bunch of clubs, that add to the college experience, including clubs for MUN, Literature, Sports, Bands, etc. There's incredible access to course related books in the library, but very little fiction, or leisurely reads. There's usually 9 fans per classroom, covering a significant portion of the class, but power outages can be a problem, sometimes lasting from 10:30 to 3:30. There's extensive sports facilities, as I mentioned earlier. Multiple Basketball Courts, Cricket Grounds, Badminton, Tennis courts, Gyms, etc. There's almost always people to join, if you're looking to play sports.
Admission
I applied to quite a few colleges, but Anna University was easily the most prestigious college I got admission to. Considering my dad studied in MIT (An Affiliate college of AU), and the fact that it has one of the most extensively connected alumni networks in the world, I thought it would be the best fit for me.
Faculty
It's hit or miss with the faculty. Though all of them are highly qualified, some of them aren't very good at putting their knowledge to words. There have been some professors that read word for word off of a textbook, when teaching coding languages. However, there have also been professors that have gone above and beyond the curriculum to ensure we learn everything that would be necessary for a job. There's normally 3 sets of exams: First Internals, Second Internals, and the third is the End Semester examination.
