Remarks
Although I had higher aspirations to study in a top b school, I feel happy I studied here at LIBA. felt like a big fish in the pond Was recognized well by all - something I would have struggled to in the likes of the top 10-15 schools.
Entrance Preview
I had missed my cat quants cut off for IIM by a whisker. I had not applied to any other college other than IIMs under CAT. I knew I had not done well enough in quants and applied for XAT as well. I got through to LIBA with the scores I managed with XAT. I opted for Liba without thinking twice because of 2 reasons - 1) the ranking of the institute was growing rapidly every year - and the college was taking the rankings very seriously. 2) the college was in Chennai and hostel was not compulsory (got married in between semesters). Don't regret it at all now. After 8 years, people now say - wow you studied at LIBA.
Course Curriculum Overview
The first year consists of a wide variety of courses ranging from economics, mathematics, computers, marketing, HR, operations, finance etc. At the end of the first year, one could select which stream one wants to specialize in and accordingly select electives. I took more of marketing and a few of HR electives and specialized in marketing.
Internships Opportunities
Yes. All candidates of my batch were placed for a summer internship. Top 20-25% were selected to good companies like JLL, cavin care, Asian paints etc where the stipend was 20,000 a month. There were many who didn't get stipend but got to work first hand in companies for their summer internship.
Placement Experience
2010 was the peak of the global recession. We were lucky that all students of my batch placed. A mix of companies came to campus for placements. There were many banks at the time of my placements. Tcs took many candidates. I am not able to recollect more since it's 8 years past.
College Events
LIBA is famous for 2-3 major industry conferences which were compulsory for everyone to participate and contribute. Insight, ethics, finance etc. In addition inter and intra college events were conducted. All major festivals are also celebrated. There used to be various clubs like marketing, finance, hr etc that used to conduct events that everyone participated in.
Fee Structure And Facilities
When I was studying there I remember I paid around 4-5 lakhs in total. There are scholarships for the deserving and needy. Fees were to be paid 2 times a year if I remember right. There was a tieup with PNB that I availed a loan from at very competitive rates.
Fees and Financial Aid
I didn't avail any scholarship but there are scholarships available for deserving and needy candidates. LIBA had a tieup with PNB for speedy and low interest education loans. I available the education loan from PNB. fast and hassle free.
Campus Life
65% male and 35% female If I remember right. Around 30% had relevant work experience. Competitions were plenty - intra college events from marketing, finance, hr, operations etc. There was a sports week as well. Cricket, table tennis, badminton etc.
Hostel Facilities
Although I stayed at the hostel and consumed mess food for only 4-5 months, LIBA hostel was separate next to the LIBA campus. At that time there was no ladies hostel. I guess they have one now. Men's hostel was nice and clean with sufficient facilities. Hostel costs were quite reasonable. Mess was a common mess with Loyola college. 3 messes - veg - non veg and North Indian. Reasonably priced and hygienic. However the menu would get monotonous most of the time.
Alumni/Alumna
There is a strong alumni network. Most of the placements happened in companies where alumni performed well and hence companies came back to campus. Alumni used to regularly come for the conferences and share their experiences with corporates.
Exam Structure
Mains and electives we're for 3 months each. Trimesters. There used to be internals, practicals and final exams with sufficient weightage given for each. Exams used to be serious. Case studies and team projects also had sufficient weightage. Grades used to be given in percentiles compared to how others performed.
Admission
XAT --- invitation for group discussion and personal interview. XAT cut off for general candidates was pretty ok with a weight given to relevant work experience. At the group discussion stage - the topic was given and once the discussion ended - each person was given a chance to summarize. After GD a final shortlist for the personal interview was given in 15 min. Personal interview of mine revolved more around my work experience and why I wanted to pursue higher education. What I hoped to learn at LIBA that I could not learn at work etc. After PI, in a few days a final list was released of selected candidates.
Faculty
Honestly quite good. Most of the professors are visiting faculty at other premier schools. Classes were a mix of theory and projects and group discussions. Faculty would update in advance what was to be prepared for the coming classes. Most Classes were lively and interesting.
