What is it like being an SRMite

The course that I chose was CSE, with a specialization in IoT. I am, to an extent, satisfied with the system and opportunities I received with this course. I want to mention to all the freshers that you must create an opportunity and grab it. You can not rely on others to always help you out. For example, when I heard about the concept of in-house projects in SRM, I was probably the first in my batch to go ahead and start a project with my faculty members. Because of this, I have gained a lot of reputation and received offers from many teachers for research. I am currently doing research under faculty from Saudi Arabia and developing ML models. The teachers over here can thus be concluded as very supportive and well-qualified. The male-to-female ratio over here is way better than the colleges I know about. Exams are also pretty easy to pass and take up a good test of your knowledge. I have also felt that the college's curriculum indirectly trains the students enough for higher studies.

Most companies that come to SRM mainly provide internships and hire for jobs and placements. If you cannot intern in any company, many project options are available here as the teachers over here actively participate in brainstorming sessions.

Students become eligible for placements from the 5th semester. Still, the actual post starts in the 7th semester, when most companies are looking to hire students For ILP (Internships leading to positions). There are over 950 companies that visit SRM, including substantial tech giants. Over 90% of students opt for placements in good companies. The highest package offered has been 1.25cr and averages about 9.5 Lakhs per annum.

The fee structure is a bit steep from my perspective, as I expected a little in terms of infrastructure when it comes to such high fees. Especially when talking about the hostels, they also have excellent scope for improvement. Although I have been to the hostels in VIT and I felt that SRM hostels are way roomier. Getting a scholarship is a little tricky as you need to be academically at least in the top 10 in your class to get one. Being in the third year of my course, I haven't received a job yet but the college's attitude towards the placement is very assuring.

There are two annual fests at our college. The Tech fest is called Aarush, and the cultural fest is called Milan. These are usually conducted in September and February, respectively. There is a vast amount of books and journals in our library for every type of preparation that you may need. All the classrooms are equipped with a projector for the teachers and students to present their work when required and obviously with chairs and tables. Although being in Chennai, an Air Conditioner could have been a c good addition. Various sports are available, and one must be highly active in the field if one wants to participate in any sport of their choice. SRM is known to produce some great sportsmen, such as the likes of Varun Chakravarthy himself.

The hostel facility in SRM is average. The rooms are well equipped and have a great feel,t, but it gets boiling and humid during summer. The food quality is poor in SRM's hostel, but compared to other colleges, it's on par. Once again, the price of over 1 Lakh rupees is not justified for such a hostel. , I have opted out of the hostel and live just 500 meters away from college in an apartment with excellent facilities. (p.s Most of the student live a nice one year in the hostel and opt-out for such apartments)

The admission process for SRM was straightforward. Once the admissions opened, the link was available on the college's official website, www.srmist.edu.in. There was a basic information form that had to be filled out, and then after receiving entrance exam money, you will be able to give the exam. The exam centres were also easy to reach and depended on your preference.
