Remarks
You are eligible to sit for the admission process if you have scored 60% or above in your graduation from any stream. The admission process was quite simple. The final marks are cumulative of two processes: First, you have to clear the written entrance exam of 50 marks for Masters in English. Then you have to sit for an online interview with the faculty staff and the Head of the Department. The interview is also of 50 marks. Your performance is gauged based on your total score in both and a cut-off is released out of 100 marks. Students with 70 marks or above were selected.
Course Curriculum Overview
The department of English is quite famous for its productive discussions and instilling an intellectual streak in the students. The professors are extremely friendly and encourage interactions. You get plenty of exposure to the world of literature, languages, and translation, especially how this knowledge can be applied to the society in which you live. The 55 students are equally paid attention to, allotted presentations, interactive doubt sessions, and opinions on various topics. The internal examination of 30 marks is conducted after every 3 months and the final semester exam, after a duration of the following 3 months after the internal exam. The faculty members are extremely supportive throughout the learning process.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees structure is different for boys and girls. For girls, the fee of this course is 8.36K while for boys, it's 9000. The same goes for hostel fees, which for girls is 7000 per year and for boys is 9000 per year. While there are no placements or internship opportunities, you get offers for teaching jobs across Gujarat towards the end. You can avail of the DSW scholarship to get a rebate over your fees, financial assistance, grants, and freeship during the application period. The eligibility criteria for the DSW scholarship requires you to be a regular/bonafide/enrolled student of the MSU. The annular family income of the applicant should be less than or equal to INR 2,25,000. The candidate should have scored 50% in the last qualifying examination and the candidate should not have availed of financial assistance from any other source.
Campus Life
The campus has a thriving environment with students from different social and cultural backgrounds studying together. With the different linguistic backgrounds of the students, you get plenty of exposure to Indian and foreign languages. The campus is clean and green, while the canteens are not as hygienic. For literature students, there are various discussions held under LSQ where there are different discussants over poetry and you can attend presentations and questions around the same.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel is well acquainted for a comfortable stay. The locality is very good and green. The wardens are extremely cooperative. The room can be 2, 3 or 4 seaters but have been limited to 2 seaters due to the pandemic situation. You are provided with a bed, table, chair, a fan and a cupboard. The bathrooms and washrooms are common and are not very hygienic. They need maintenance, though the cleaning staff is well-spoken and gentle. The hygiene is well maintained in some parts of the hostel. The mess is very well kept with a diverse menu. You can get South Indian, Chinese, North Indian and western Indian cuisines of very good quality.
