Remarks
I applied to Manipal University but was unable to join because I had done the counselling in SRM by the time I got a call letter from Manipal University. I did not avail any quota. Minimum 55% marks were required in the 12th standard to get admission in SRM and the student also has to clear SRMJEEE which is the college's own entrance exam. Your rank has to be under 70000 to get a call letter from SRM. On the day of the counselling, we were all seated in an auditorium. The counselling process is of 2 weeks and students are allotted dates according to their ranks in SRMJEEE. The students get called one by one to the stage and have to choose the branch they want to pursue. If seats are available then you are allowed to join the branch of your choice. After filling a form and doing your signature. You go to the office next to the auditorium where you provide all your documents such as 10th & 12th mark sheets, photocopy of your and your parents' aadhaar, passport size photo and migration certificate
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose Automobile engineering because I always wanted to build cars and decided to become an automobile engineer at a very young age. Every class had a maximum of 50 students with 7-8 faculties depending upon the number of subjects. Most of the facilities had PhDs in their respective field and all had different teaching methods which were all very effective. We had 3 theory internals (Cycle tests 1,2&3) in a span of 3 months, Assignments and surprise tests for every subject and internal laboratory exams for laboratory subjects. The cycle tests, assignments and surprise tests combined constituted 50% marks. Then we had the semester laboratory exams followed by the semester theory exams which contained the rest 50% of the marks. After the exams, the internal and external marks were added and averaged. 50% of that was our passing marks.
Placement Experience
We became eligible for placements from the 7th semester. Due to covid not a lot of companies came, and being in a field like an Automobile engineering made it even more difficult. Only 3 core automobile companies came to recruit out of 4 campuses. The highest package can go up to 40 LPA and the average package is around 4LPA. On the website, it says that there is 100% placement, but it is actually around 70%. And this year due to covid the percentage is well below half. My plans are to work on my designing skills and get a job in product development in any big car manufacturing company.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees were a little high but did not have a hike in my 4 years of study. The facilities on the campus were up to the mark and all laboratory equipments were up to date. I did not get a scholarship and there was no job on campus.
Campus Life
Being one of the best private engineering colleges in India, SRM offered a lot of sports opportunities and has a National level sports fest every year. Other than sports there are different societies on campus that offer many extracurricular activities such as drama, dance, music, photography, gaming, etc. We also had technical teams of different departments. I joined one in 2nd year called Dirt rangers that build ATVs from scratch and participates in racing events all over India. I learnt a lot in that team and also became the team's captain in my last year of college.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel was fairly good. We have 3 students in a room, all were given a separate bed, table and chair. The room has a joint bathroom. The meals were good but not great. A lot of us used to eat at the canteen half the time. The registration process of the hostels was online and ranged between 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh.
