Remarks
SMMCHRI made me the doctor I am today. The college is full of noble doctors and trained staff who are all down to earth and polite. The college atmosphere is friendly and safe, not to forget beautifully designed along with gardens. The hospital is well equipped with every medical supply, from vaccine to operation materials. It follows a strict curriculum and makes a doctor more professional.
Course Curriculum Overview
MBBS is a 4.5 year duration course where the last year is always internship year, the first year is an introduction to the human physiology and anatomy, later the complexities rise as we proceed to study further. More practicals were included and ice breaking to face a human body and operate it was done. The internals happened twice in a year while the externals happened at the end of each year. 5-6 subjects were taught every year. The last year was internship year where we performed doctor?s duty and experienced the profession.
Placement Experience
Being a doctor is a privilege which only a few people acquire, due to the hardships of achieving the seat in medical college, the profession never runs out of scope. At the end of my internship I was offered many job offers from various hospitals and nursing homes with a fair pay scale of 5-8 lakhs per annum. We can also start our own private clinic and practise medicine. Some people opt to study further and do specialisations which have more scope than just being an MBBS.
College Events
Being a diversified college, we used to celebrate all the indian festivals and had different fests where students along with the staff used to perform dance, music, modeling ramp walk, beauty pageants etc.The annual day was celebrated once in a year, rangoli competitions and food fests were also there. Our main festival was Durga Pooja and Dussehra. Various sports events were organised by students and matches were played.
Fee Structure And Facilities
College fees were nearly INR 2 lakhs per year, the course cost INR 80,000,00 approximately which was high but totally worth the facilities it provided, the labs and the hospital equipment. We had all the services available in the college and hence are made better professional doctors.
Campus Life
The extra curricular activities included all the festivals, graduation, farewell and induction ceremonies which allowed us to interact with people from different backgrounds. The college infrastructure was well designed and constructed, the labs and libraries were properly made, had all the requirements, the cafeteria was well cleaned and maintained with fresh food.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel was nicely constructed for both students and staff. The water and electricity supply was 24*7. Mess had strict timings and only served healthy food. There was no co-head hostel but for boys and girls separately. The buildings had a garden area where we could release stress from a hard day. The washrooms were neat and spacious for the students.
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni meet used to happen once a year but the doctors came to visit us often. They guided well and provided us with an abundance of knowledge from their experiences.the guest lectures were led by them mainly and we used to assist them in many practical sessions. Overall the alumni was humble and supportive towards the junior doctors.
Admission
I applied for an MBBS course at SMMCHRI after giving and passing the HSC examination which is conducted by Tamil Nadu State Board and later gave NEET UG which is the all india entrance exam for medical sciences. I applied for the college online, the application form was of INR 1400, after the verification of the documents the admission was decided on my entrance marks. I was called upon for counselling and filled the final registration for the college along with the annual fees.
Faculty
The dean, Dr.VS Dorairaj is one of the most idolised persons in the college. We all looked forward to becoming like him, he is still my idol. The way he communicated with the students was something very admiring and charismatic about him. Rest of the teacher doctors were good too, they were always helpful and guided when needed. Apart from the curricular problems they used to comfort students personally too.
