Remarks
The college is good but it should work more on campus placements and as an industry, its not very high paying income on an average. So maybe as a govt college, NIFT should change its curriculum to be more industry oriented so that students can get higher paying jobs after their graduation.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course Curriculum in terms of fashion design is the best in the country. It is research driven and gave practical learning experience with time to time internships and cluster programs. So it gave a balance learning of indepth knowledge of fashion through studying under the best design faculty in India, learning the craftsmanship and understanding the tactics of getting the work done through local artisans through craft clusters, knowing the ins and outs of industry and learning the professionalism through industry internships.
Placement Experience
The college takes full responsibility for the internships and placements of students. A lot a good companies come for campus placements and Internships like Madura Fashion, Arvind, Myntra, Ajio, ABOF, Orient Craft, Monte Carlo.
College Events
There are lot of cultural and management events held in the campus like Freshers, Spectrum, Cultural Fest, Farewell, Convocation. Apart from this all the traditional festivals are celebrated with equal zeal and enthusiasm be it Holi, Diwali, Dussehra or Onam, Pongal and Janmashtami.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fees for B. Des is around 6.5 lakhs and college accepts payments through Demand drafts and Cheques.Yes the college provides a fair breakdown of fees during admission. But there are a lot of extra charges like Hostel Fees, Mess Charges and the material cost of each project is huge but yes that you can skip and look for cheaper alternatives as these are not mandatory charges but eventually you will need all the project material for your projects.
Fees and Financial Aid
Yes, I opted for an education loan. The college offers scholarship to only SC/ST/OBC students. The biggest loophole of this being a government college is that even if your father is a rich businessman and you show a very humble salary certificate of your father, you can avail this opportunity. My father is a government employee and everything is fair in terms of salary so we opted for an education loan.
Campus Life
Campus Life is way cooler than any college in India. There are 3 DJ nights in college in an year. There are time to time activities, fashion shows, competitions, celebrations going on in the college apart from your regular course structure which keeps you very busy for four years of your college life. There are definitely more girls than boys in NIFT. But there is no discrimination with regards to gender, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, politics and economic status. In fact I believe NIFT is the only college who open heartedly accepted bisexuals, homosexuals back in 2010-11 when even India did not accepted this as a country. In Bangalore, its a very small campus and anybody knows everybody. So its a real good environment there.
Hostel Facilities
Yes, at Nift Bangalore, only girls in 1st year get a hostel. There is no hostel for boys even in 1st year. 2nd year onwards, girls might get a hostel.might not. Rooms are pretty decent as they are attached Bathrooms and they are inside the campus, close to mess. So they are pretty decent.
Alumni/Alumna
Alumini Network is strong and the senior students are helpful too but this is a very small industry. You will definitely come across you seniors/juniors someday. So just maintain good relationships and start working on your networking from day 1 to get strong connections lifelong.
Admission
I gave an entrance examination for NIFT on Feb 20, 2011, just a weak before my Physics board exam. I had to go to Lucknow for the exam as I am primarily from Kanpur and my examination center was is Lucknow. It consisted of two rounds, one written and 2nd sketching. I was called for the 2nd round of exams which was a situation test in Delhi in April, 2011. After few months, results were out and I got 226 rank in General category. I again went to Delhi for counselling. I was getting Leather Design in Delhi and because of hailing from the city of biggest leather industry in India-Kanpur.this was a golden chance for me. But there was no hostel in Delhi and I was just 17 at that time so I decided to take Bangalore center instead as my real bother was working there as a software developer. So, i l landed up taking Knitwear Design and Technology from NIFT Bangalore
