Remarks
Its a good college that provides good education and vast opportunities as long as you strive to do better and make most of your time with the institution. They provide opportunities to continue your studies outside as well be exchange students or complete half your btech in a foreign university provided you have the required communication skills and cgpa and financing. I'm satisfied with it and believe I can graduate well.
Course Curriculum Overview
I do like the teaching quality. Of course I'm not saying all teachers are very good but most are impressive and have a lot of knowledge beyond what the course requires. Our subjects and its contents and curriculum fortunately are industry based unlike some colleges and their curriculum which just follow traditional engineering books and nothing more. We're taught what's really required and what's currently going on in industry rather than pointless topics which were once a part of traditional engineering. The course has additional subjects, some of them purely aimed at improving students in their physical and mental health such as yoga, critical thinking and creativity, soft skills, history and civics, evs, etc. One additional subject I greatly valued is foreign languages, all students must compulsorily study any of the various choices of foreign language. I chose German and they trained me upto the requirement to write the official German exam. Research opportunities are there and all support is provided to those who are innovative and prove themselves worthy. Placement training starts from first semester, providing us knowledge and practice of right etiquette, communication skills, coding skills, etc. Industry visits are held. As of now, as a 2nd year I haven't had one but my seniors have had and hopefully the same will be provided to us. They provide opportunities to continue your studies outside as well be exchange students or complete half your btech in a foreign university provided you have the required communication skills and cgpa and financing
Placement Experience
Placements are plenty but not very impressive. Basic requirement for sitting for a company is decided by your cgpa and by your score in the initial coding round held online. Getting your placed is solely in your hands. The college is visited by plenty of companies with offers varying from 3 lk per annum to around 1.5 crores per annum. Campus placements are there, that aside students are also allowed to attend placement rounds in other campuses. The main campus has over 150 companies participating and all srm students from any campus can attend aside their respective campus visitors. Those students with exceptional capabilities are offered super dream offers where you can sit for placements of 40lk and above in companies such as Google, Microsoft, etc. 2017 and 2018 had 100% placement. 2019 had 80% and 2020 as of March 1st, 78%. As I'm a second year, I cannot provide a list of companies but I can list a few names. IBM, Accenture, Microsoft, Intel, Verizon, Capegemini, Google, Wipro, TCS, Infosys, Nutanix, Seimens, L&T, Byju's, Adobe, Zoho, a few startups, etc. SRM stresses a lot on placement training, it starts from the very first semester and is practiced till the end. External coaching agencies such as Campus Corporate Connect provide daily classes for competitive coding with credits taken up for gpa consideration. Internships are provided by the college starting from 3rd year. I have not availed any from the college yet.
College Events
Every year fests, meet ups, technical fests, symposiums, guest talks, cultural events, each festival celebration and respective culturals, hackathons, idea presentations, innovation contests, project day, Paper presentation celebration of public celebratory days like women's day, environmental day, etc, exhibitions, food carnivals, fashion shows, dj nights, moto expo, club events and workshops, department events and workshops, etc are held. These repeat every year with new themes. Additionally every year there's more events. Aside this, there's plenty of activities and events hosted by NSS and NSO students such as rallys, field trips, visits to certain societies, contributions to the society, etc. There's inter campus and within campus sports events and well as technical gaming events such as robot war, robot racing, then gaming events, micromouse, etc. Currently every student in the campus must compulsorily submit atleast one slogan wrt to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fee Structure And Facilities
I pay an annual fee of 2 lk which remains fixed till I graduate. The fees isn't increased for new batches. If at all increased, its by a small percentage which is bearable. Aside annual fees, we must pay 35k on books and additional training course from external institutions. Right now I'm taught machine learning by Prag Robotics for which I pay 20k annually. Its compulsory and hall ticket will be only issued if all fees are paid. The institution doesn't provide any transparency in the fee breakdown. There's no variation of fees among students, all pay the same amount. I think the fee amount is okay because education has become business and most colleges except the IITs, NITs, and IIITs charge close to 2 lakhs for semi government seats and a minimum of 1lk for a 100 government seats. In addition other colleges have hefty management seats which go anywhere between 20 to 50 lakhs.
Fees and Financial Aid
I haven't opted for any loan and haven't availed any scholarship. During the counseling, after securing your seat, you're directed to a room full of stalls by various banks and agencies solely there to provide and explain education loans, etc. Scholarships in the form of 10k annual fees is provided by default to the top 100 ranks and followed by 50k fees, 1lk fees for certain rank segments. That aside after every year, you can apply for scholarship in the campus and based on your cgpa, you may recieve a fee cut.
Campus Life
Gender ratio, I'd say among students males constitute 60% and females 40% and among the staff females constitute 65% and males 35%. There's plenty of clubs and other extra curricular activities. Organizations like MUN and some societies also are very active. Student run labs exist alongside regular labs which are part of the course. The college labs are extremely good and well maintained and one will face no issues at all. There are a variety of clubs, each with specific domains and fields of interest with annual recruitment. Ragging is strictly prohibited and severe action will be taken. In two years, I've never seen a single case of ragging or fights in my campus. Discipline in Ramapuram campus has always been the best. Boys are to dress formally and girls are to wear only kurtis. Jeans is strictly prohibited for boys and girls. Sandals and unethical attire is prohibited. Use of smartwatches is banned. No issues with religion, race, etc among students. The main campus at kattankulathur has all kinds of issues and misbehavior. Students often fight. But my campus at Ramapuram is good. Plenty of competitions, hackathons, innovation contests, etc are held. The language and foreign language department hosts plenty of technical and non technical debates and events along with MUN. Every semester, external faculty from companies like Prag robotics come and teach robotics, machine learning, coding, etc
Hostel Facilities
No. I personally dislike hostels and hence never opted. Hostels in our campus are okay, I wouldn't say they're great nor bad. There's both AC (1lk per. Annum) and non Ac (60k per Annum). Mess fee is separate at 60k per annum and I like the food quality and variety of items. PGs outside campus are expensive coming at a minimum of 8k. Per month of a bed in a 2bhk house shared by 8 ppl. Its very disappointing. Fortunately I stay alone in an apartment Paying a rent of 9k including other expenses and its very comfortable. PGs do have facilities but extremely poor amount of space and peace. They're pathetic and a waste of money in all regards.
Alumni/Alumna
Seniors are friendly and helpful and invite the juniors to clubs and mainly responsible for most of the events and workshops happening in the campus. They're brilliant and encourage us juniors to learn new things and excel. Surprisingly they're very well mannered and there's no rudeness or bossing around. Alumni network exists and they help a lot. They often visit and have talks with students and help plan things to make the campus a better place. They share vital recommendations and real knowledge on current industry requirements and possibilities. They provide opportunities to continue your studies outside as well be exchange students or complete half your btech in a foreign university provided you have the required communication skills and cgpa and financing.
Admission
I got my admission through the SRM entrance which I attended in Bangalore. After the results were out, according to the rank segment you belong to, you're invited to a counseling session at a certain campus on specific dates. I had ktr as my counseling centre. On the day of counseling, all the students gathered will be allowed to view all courses available and how many seats are vacant for each course in each campus. While you view this and remain seated, according to your ranks, you're called to submit your certificates for verification, application form, etc along with a DD of your annual fees and also have a small interview with the staff at the desk. Followed by this, along with one parent, you're directed to a hall of staffs with computers where you can approach any who are free and tell them which course you wish to opt and which campus. They will check the availability of seats immediately and if its available, in the next 3-5 minutes you're allotted a seat and you recieve a printed statement of your course, fee structure etc. With this your seat is confirmed. Later, on the mentioned dates, you are to visit the campus opted and submit your certificates, fill up a few forms and other formality to make it clear that you will definitely be joining the college. This aside, if you require hostel, you fill other forms and apply for it. I had not taken hostel and so I cannot give a very detailed guide to how it works, but I know it's very simple and one just has to submit an application along with a DD of the hostel fees. I chose SRM because being a private institution, it has certain merits and better placement options. They had CSE with specialization introduced for the first time which back then was only available at SRM. There were many specializations such as cloud computing, cyber security, internet if things, artificial intelligence and machine learning, etc. I chose Big Data Analytics and my campus choice was Ramapuram which I'm certain of and supported by most that's its the best place for discipline and education quality unlike the other campuses where events and ither programs unrelated to the course are given priority and overall has a bad reputation for performance in exams. I'm happy with my choice of campus and course and would recommend it to anyone who wishes to complete the course well than have fun all the time considering its college.
Faculty
Overall, I'd say they are good and respectable. Most teachers have always done a good job and I've liked them. A ratio of 1:3 is maintained for teachers and students. There's always plenty of teachers available to approach if your assigned subject teacher isn't available. The HODs are all highly qualified and my current cse hod was the ex director of Microsoft innovation centre and has a doctorate. All HODs and about 60% staff have doctorates and most of those without it are pursuing their studies for it currently. Aside their expertise in teaching us well, I'd say they know a lot more than the subject. They often share knowledge in depth about real time technological advancements and secrets behind it and how it works etc. Some of them I know have had a background with the industry. About certifications, aside from their educational qualifications, I only have knowledge of some having done courses with highly reputed universities and doing private research work.
