Various Aspects of College Life

My college has given me some real lessons of the world. I have learnt a lot and become very self confident. Though there is always room for improvement for my college, I would still stay it has been one of the most serendipitous life time experiences.

When I joined SRM Ramapuram campus in 2014, the testing system was rigorous. In one semester, there were 2 rounds of class tests and then end semester exams. Also, there were regular practical sessions to explain some subjects in details in real time environment. Industrial visits were organised to give us an insight into the professional environment.

Many companies come to our college like TCS, Infosys, Seimens, Ernst & Young, HUL, CISCO, Wipro, Capgemini, Zoho, L&T Infotech, Mindtree and many more for the IT department. To sit for the selection process of these companies, first every student has to follow the eligibility criteria. The individual company decides the eligibility criteria which is generally based on 10th marks, 12th marks and the current CGPA.

Ramapuram Campus has a cultural fest every year known as SRM Stringzz. The IT department organises a technical symposium annually called Aurganon. Students from colleges all over Chennai and other parts of the country come and participate. A Sports Week is also held to emphasize the importance of exercise and activities in daily life. All types of sports including football, Cricket, basket ball, TT, athletes, throw all are played.

My tuition fee was around 1.5 LPA. Hostel fees and book fees had to be paid separately. So overall it was around 3 LPA. It must have increased now. The mode of payment was online through debit card/ credit card/ others. We could also pay by DD. The college does provide a proper online receipt which shows the fee-breakdown.

There are scholarship opportunities for students. They can contact the respective departments and enquire about the details. There are various scholarships but each has different criteria. Education loan is also provided to those who require it. At the time of admission, all the queries can be resolved by the concerned authorities.

Girls ratio is less compared to boys except for CSE department where they might almost be equal. There is a Women's Grievance Cell which helps the girls students when they require it. There is also an Anti-Ragging Cell to help and protect the new students. Extracurricular activities are held frequently by the various departments. Everyone can participate in the Sports Week too according to their choice.

My hostel building included attached bathroom and there were 2 sharing, 3 sharing, 4 sharing rooms along with a lift. Some hostel buildings didn't have attached bathroom or lifts. There was a garden and a common study room. Mess room was huge and could easily accommodate all the girls. Vegetarian and non vegetarian food items were kept separately. We had to bring our own utensils though.

My department used to have video conferences with the alumni as they were often in other parts of the world. They used to solve our doubts regarding higher studies, jobs, etc. Some seniors also used to tell us about the placement sessions and how to interact with the faculty. It helped us to settle well with the college environment.

I had given the engineering entrance exam SRMJEE. I had chosen this college since it provided an all-round personality development experience. It had the courses which I was interested in. I wanted to study and pursue engineering in IT since I had a little knowledge of that from school studies. After giving SRMJEE, they called for course selection to the main campus in Chennai according to the rank secured.

Our college had around 10-15 members including laboratory staff faculty for the Information Technology department. They were approachable and always encouraged us to research more on the topics to increase our outlook and knowledge. Most of them have a Master's degree with a good experience in teaching or industrial field. Some of the faculty are also pursuing their PhD.
