How is VNIT?

VNIT is a decent college, especially for Mechanical Engineering. The curriculum is quite comprehensive but could use some updating to keep pace with industry practices. The exams are moderately difficult, and maintaining a good CGPA is crucial for internships. Speaking of internships, many companies come for placements, but the competition is tough, and only a few students land the coveted roles. The average package is decent, around 10-12 LPA, which is good compared to other colleges. Overall, VNIT provides a solid foundation, but there's room for improvement, especially in practical exposure.

It really depends on your personality and what you enjoy. Here's a quick rundown of VNIT from my perspective.

Let's start with the downsides:

• The weather is generally hot except in December, January, and the monsoon season.
• May and June are the hottest months.
• The food is tasty at first but might become less appealing over time.
• It was getting better when I graduated, but you should ask current students to confirm.
• Regionalism and favoritism can be found, which is common in India.
• The city doesn't offer many exciting places for picnics, and it feels a bit dull.
• There's only one canteen on campus with a limited menu, but it's affordable.
• I used to love the dahi-kachori there.
• The sports ground is quite a distance from the hostels, and sometimes you might miss out on snacks and tea after sports class.
• Minor issues often arise between seniors and faculty, so don't believe everything you hear right away.
• You'll be invited to join various clubs in your first year.
• Some aren't very beneficial, but a few, like the social club Prayaas and the thalassemia awareness society, helped me a lot.
• Your experience will depend on how you interact with seniors in those clubs.

Now for the good stuff:

• The campus was initially at the city's edge, but now it's in the center, with many eateries, cinemas, and markets nearby.
• The ECE faculty is excellent, though some professors are strict, so check with seniors about them.
• Your first year will be amazing, so stay away from bad influences and get involved in events.
• They might not seem useful, but they offer great exposure and experience.
• The campus might not be as impressive as other NITs, but you'll grow to love it.
• There are countless festivals, cultural nights, and events to enjoy if you make friends.
• During monsoon, you can enjoy corn from a nearby market.
• You'll have opportunities to showcase your projects nationally and internationally.
• Keep good relations with seniors and faculty, as they can guide you.
• Maintain good grades, and you'll likely land a great job.
• VNIT has a strong alumni network, so you're lucky to join.
• The college guides you, but your future is in your hands.

A few tips:

• Some students get depressed over bad grades, failed subjects, or personal issues, and might consider extreme actions.
• If you see anyone struggling, encourage them and offer support.
• If you feel down, talk to me or reach out to friends and family.
• I've seen students with low grades eventually land top jobs.
• Even if conditions aren't favorable, it doesn't mean it's the end.
• Work hard without putting too much pressure on yourself.
• While grades matter, they're not the sole factor in determining your future.

My time at VNIT Nagpur, studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering, has been quite good. The course curriculum is structured well, but it leans more towards theory than practical skills. Hey there! Welcome to the VNIT family. I'm part of the ECE department, so I can share some insights based on my experience here.

Here's what you'll love about VNIT:

• The campus is stunning. Friends from IIT Bombay and other NITs have been impressed by the natural beauty here. Surprisingly, VNIT is actually a protected bird sanctuary with some rare birds. We have a huge playground, a big auditorium, two banks, plus night and day canteens, a music room, and student activity centers. And guess what, we even have a MiG on campus! Not many places can say that. There's also a large library, a computer center, and a health center.
• Our alumni network is strong. The VNIT Alumni Association is fantastic. For instance, the current collector of Nagpur is one of our alumni. The folks in the alumni association are super helpful and supportive.
• There are tons of events throughout the year, like Institute Gathering, Departmental Gathering, Axis, Consortium, Aarohi, Freshers, Cultural Nights, QuizFest, Renaissance, and Krikmania. You can find more details about these online.
• Academically, Mechanical and Electronics departments are well-regarded. According to the Times Engineering Survey, we're ranked 11th in the nation, the top NIT in India. Aim for a CGPA above 9. It might not seem crucial later on, but a low CGPA can limit your options.
• Clubs are a big part of VNIT life. There are about 25-30 clubs, whether you're into tech, dance, or sports. Join at least one while you're here. We also have our own magazine called INSIGHT, which has been doing great work.
• Placements are strong, especially for ECE and CSE. Many CSE companies allow ECE students for interviews, giving you an edge. Placements have improved this year, and this trend should continue.
• For research, VNIT offers great opportunities. The ECE department houses a Centre of Excellence in Combedded Systems, the only one in VNIT and funded by the central government. There’s also a Centre for VLSI and Nanotechnology, which boasts top-notch research. However, the publication rate is relatively low here.

Areas for Improvement:

• The hostel facilities need a lot of work. It's not very efficient, unfortunately.
• The staff and some students may seem mediocre since it became an NIT only 13 years ago.
• There's limited student involvement in decision-making. The administration could be more student-friendly.

Advice: Remember, with 4000 engineering colleges in India, around 4 lakh ECE students will graduate with you in 2019. Stand out by following your passion and seizing every opportunity. Once missed, they won't come back. Good luck!

VNIT has been a good experience for me in the Civil Engineering program. The curriculum focuses on real-world applications, which is great for understanding the field better.
