Is MAMC overrated?

Choosing to be a doctor in India can be a challenging decision when it comes to self-care. But in terms of gaining knowledge, experience, and satisfaction, it's worth every bit of effort.

It's unfortunate that doctors are often seen as greedy businesspeople in white coats, just out to make money. If you're Indian, you've probably heard people say, "Doctors just rip you off with unnecessary tests."

Here's a story for you. My cousin got really sick with Dengue once, and his platelet count got dangerously low. After days in the ICU, when he started bleeding from his mouth, his grandma threatened the doctor, saying, "If anything happens to him, you're done for." But it wasn't the doctor's fault. The family had given him aspirin when he had a fever, not knowing it was harmful for Dengue patients because it affects platelets.

A common issue in India is that people try to treat themselves first, mess up badly, and then blame doctors when things go wrong.

In school, we learn 'Health is wealth' and 'Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.' But they don't tell you that being a doctor means sacrificing your own health.

When it comes to earning money, doctors don't make much until they specialize. After years of hard work and sleepless nights, they still have to budget carefully because of expenses like rent and loans.

And if that's not enough, sometimes uneducated people will storm into an operating room and blame the doctor for something that's not their fault.

So, why would you want to do MBBS in India?

• You love Medicine and want to help people.
• You're from a middle-class family and need financial stability. While the pay isn't great, doctors don't starve. Medicine is always needed.
• You don't like Math.

MBBS is a wonderful field of study. Those who learn about the human body and its treatment are truly fortunate. MBBS isn't overrated. MBBS in India, maybe.

I would say that MAMC has its strengths, but it might be overrated in some aspects. The MBBS curriculum is solid, and the faculty are well-qualified. However, the teaching methods often rely heavily on PowerPoint slides, which can get dull. The exams are quite difficult, especially in the first few years, and you need to be very committed to do well. Plus, while the fees are low, the campus facilities could use some improvement, especially regarding hostel conditions. So, while it's a good college, it may not be as perfect as everyone says.

MAMC isn't really overrated, but as someone mentioned, some overly enthusiastic NEET aspirants have hyped it up too much. I'm not saying the course isn't valuable or anything. I love medicine and chose it for myself, so I would never criticize my career choice.

The hype would be more balanced if Indian parents didn't pressure their kids into becoming doctors, and if aspirants didn't spend five years prepping, including time in the 11th and 12th grades and taking multiple gap years.

Honestly, and I know it might sound harsh, but MBBS isn't worth giving up your youth for. I've mentioned this many times before. People often ask me if they should start MBBS at 21 or 25. Age doesn't matter as much as the fact that you worked hard to get in after several gap years. But ask yourself, can you turn back time to 18? Will you have the same opportunities to explore other things? While your friends are graduating and moving abroad, you might still be working through your late 20s without a bachelor's degree. Sure, an MBBS degree is prestigious, but is it worth losing so much time?

In India, the MBBS path is overrated, mainly the intense process of getting in. Many realize this once they're in college. Becoming a doctor isn't easy; it comes with sleepless nights, stress, anxiety, and many challenges.

But when you're actually in the medical field, you'll see it's not overrated at all. Some people might have a low opinion of doctors, thinking they're out to take their money, while others might treat them like gods. Perspectives change over time.

In short, the MBBS profession itself is wonderful and not overrated. But don't sacrifice your life for it!
