What is your review of TA Pai Management Institute Manipal?

TAPMI was truly a place where I experienced "Learning for Life". There were tons of options to get involved in, like sports, committee activities, college competitions, and industry meetups. Personally, I focused on taking full advantage of these opportunities.

Being there made me tougher and taught me how to handle tough situations effectively. The infrastructure is quite impressive, with well-equipped hostel rooms, classrooms, a library, wi-fi, computer labs, and a finance lab.

In the past year, the management has made some great improvements. I'm really pleased with my decision to choose TAPMI over other schools I considered after the entrance exams.

I'm currently pursuing the MBA at T A Pai Management Institute Manipal, and so far, it's been a great journey. The internship opportunities are promising; companies like EY and ITC are known to visit for placements. The tuition fees are about 21.6 lakh for two years, which includes hostel costs, but the quality of education justifies it. The campus life is vibrant, with lots of clubs and events, making it a fulfilling experience overall.

At first, the initial days at T A Pai Management Institute can feel really tough, almost like being in a strict camp. You'll need to be prepared for classes at either 8:30 in the morning or 1:15 in the afternoon, depending on your schedule. While afternoon classes might seem like a chance to catch up on sleep, they quickly lose their appeal. Your day kicks off with a quick breakfast followed by classes. Oh, and don't forget the pre-reading requirement—20 to 30 pages to prep for class discussions, as participation is graded. Some classmates might claim they won't study, but you'll soon see who was serious.

Just when you think the next day will be packed with two case studies and a Moodle quiz, you might suddenly get an email about a batch meeting at 10 PM, completely throwing off your plans. Weekly assignments, Moodle tasks, and case studies pile up, along with midterms and finals, all while trying to maintain a GPA of at least 4.4.

And, of course, you can't forget about the steep hill you need to climb every morning to get to classes, often in the rain.

The first two months will fly by, and you'll find yourself eagerly waiting for a term break to unwind. By the second term, though, you'll start to adapt. You'll master grabbing breakfast during 15-minute breaks and figure out how to discreetly use your phone in class. This term also brings internship interviews and other events, making life feel more manageable, and TAPMI starts to feel like an enjoyable place.

You'll join committees and form great friendships. There are events, section competitions, and festivals, where regional groups bring the celebrations to campus with amazing food. DJ nights offer a chance to dance away your worries, and there are parties both outside and impromptu birthday celebrations inside.

In summary, once you get through those first two months, the next seven are a blast!

If you thought the strictness in the movie Mohabbatein was intense, TAPMI is just a notch below that. It's situated in the lovely city of Manipal, Karnataka. For those of us from big cities, the location feels almost unreal. The college is perched on a lonely hill with the nearest town about 6 km away. It's a nice place if the college policies don't get in your way.

Academics and Curriculum
There are only a few teachers who can really teach well; many seem too laid-back or aren't great at teaching. TAPMI focuses more on academics than real-world skills, which seems common in top business schools too. The classrooms have top-notch infrastructure, probably among the best in Indian colleges.

Placements
TAPMI is a Tier 2 school, or maybe even a sub-tier 2, with newer IIMs ranked higher. You won't find many top-tier companies offering front-end roles here. Most companies from the top 10 b-schools don't come, or if they do, they offer back-end roles. TAPMI is known for IT jobs, and despite what is said about a shift towards finance, it hasn't changed much. Finance majors often end up in IT roles, whether at Infosys or major banks. The average salary is around 8-10 LPA, with a few outliers getting 20-22 LPA through competitions.

Infrastructure
Though TAPMI claims a 44-acre campus, it feels more like a long straight road with no stops. The space isn't really used for recreation. There's no auditorium, gym, or sports complex on campus. Just one basketball and volleyball court. The annual sports event happens at a nearby field under Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE).

Food, Culture, Hostels
Now, onto the unique rules at TAPMI. Students must return by 11:30 pm and sign a register, which often leads to long queues. Missing the deadline means disciplinary action. For a night out, your parents need to email the PGP office, which might be verified by staff calling them, and approval is at the whim of management.

There are random hostel checks for alcohol. Girls can't enter boys' rooms, and there are only 6 common rooms for 900 students. Girls can only enter these if they're not wearing shorts. Most students end up buying their own vehicles. Bikes without side mirrors are not allowed, and not wearing a helmet even briefly means your bike will be banned for the term. Parking is limited, and if you don't park in the designated space, your vehicle will be moved.

Hostel rooms come in two sizes, small or big, and allocation is random. Everyone pays the same regardless of room size. What used to be a single room is now shared by two, with just one cupboard for both.

Food-wise, the mess lives up to its name, and the food isn't great.

Verdict: If you're aiming for top IIMs, don't settle for TAPMI or other Tier 2 schools, as you might regret it. But if you're looking at a longer career span of 10-20 years, Tier 2 colleges can be a good option, as they only shape about 5% of who you are in the long run.

My experience in the MBA program at T A Pai Management Institute Manipal has been quite good. The curriculum is rigorous, and the workload can be a bit overwhelming, especially with 9-10 subjects per trimester. The faculty is approachable and well-qualified, which is a plus. I've heard about companies like Deloitte and ITC coming for placements, with an average package of 14.6 lakh. The hostel facilities are decent, but the fees are on the higher side. However, the overall learning environment is excellent.
