grace marks rules for engineering at Mumbai University (MU):

  • MU allows grace marks for engineering students under specific conditions to help borderline pass/fail cases
  • Passing grace: up to 4 marks can be awarded per paper if a student fails by those marks
  • Semester aggregate grace: limited total grace per semester
  • grace marks are automatically applied by MU's exam cell — students don't need to apply separately
  • grace cannot convert a fail to pass if the deficit is more than the allowed grace limit

grace mark rules have been revised multiple times under MU's different exam schemes (2012, 2016, CBCGS). check the exact rules applicable to your batch through your college's exam department or mu.ac.in. Mumbai University's rules around grace can be quite scheme-specific — your college is the best resource for the most current applicable rule.

MU engineering grace marks — the rules have some specific nuances that most answers gloss over.

Official MU grace marks policy for engineering:

  • Maximum 5 grace marks per semester (not per subject — shared across all subjects in that semester).
  • Grace can be applied to a maximum of one subject per semester.
  • Grace purpose: Only to help a student pass (reach 40/100). Cannot be used to improve grades above passing.
  • Grace applies ONLY to the university theory examination marks — NOT to internal assessment (term work, oral, practical).

What most answers miss:

  • Grace marks are applied automatically by MU — you don't need to separately apply for them. The exam section calculates if grace would help you pass any subject and applies it.
  • If you need grace in multiple subjects: MU policy usually grants grace to the subject where the smallest number of marks (up to 5) would push you to pass. Only one subject gets the benefit.
  • Mark verification vs grace marks: These are different processes. Grace is automatic; if you want marks rechecked, apply for verification/revaluation separately (different form, different fee).
  • Grace marks DO appear on your marksheet — they're reflected in the final marks listed.

If you're just 1-4 marks short of passing after results: Check your marksheet carefully. Grace may have already been applied. If it hasn't and you believe you're eligible, contact the MU exam section with your result printout — they can clarify if grace was considered.

Mumbai University offers grace marks if you fail in one subject in a semester. Let’s say, there are 6 subjects in a semester, and if you fail in two subjects, you won’t get grace marks. The university only offers grace marks, if you pass in all the subjects except one. The amount of grace marks allotted is 10%. If you fail a theory examination with 80 marks, then 10% of 80, i.e. 8 is given as grace marks.

If you are getting passing marks in all of your subjects in the current semester but getting below passing marks in any single one of the subjects, then the concept of grace marks is applicable. In the above case, the university provides up to 10 marks as grace. It is important to note that, if you only need 3 marks to clear that subject, they will only be allocated 3 marks as their grace mark with a ‘*’ sign.

This sign will be observed against the subject for which the grace marks have been applied. This scenario is for Mumbai University, the conditions may vary as per the university norms.
