difference between degree certificate and supplementary degree certificate from Pune University (SPPU):

  • Degree Certificate (Convocation Certificate): the official degree document issued during convocation (annual ceremony). awarded after successfully completing all program requirements. this is the primary degree document you receive at convocation. if you're present at the annual convocation, you get this.
  • Supplementary Degree Certificate: issued when you couldn't attend the convocation ceremony OR cleared your remaining backlogs after your main batch's convocation. it's essentially the same degree but issued through an administrative process rather than formal ceremony. it has the same legal validity as the convocation degree

both have identical legal standing for employment, higher education, and government purposes. the supplementary certificate just indicates you received it outside the regular convocation cycle. if employers/universities ask for a 'degree certificate,' both types are acceptable. contact SPPU exam section if you need a clarification letter stating equivalence.

Degree Certificate vs Supplementary Degree Certificate from Savitribai Phule Pune University — these are genuinely different documents and people often confuse them.

Degree Certificate (Original/Convocation Degree):

  • Issued at SPPU's convocation ceremony. This is the official degree certificate with the university seal, Chancellor/Vice-Chancellor signatures, and degree class (First Class with Distinction, etc.).
  • You receive this after: (a) clearing all subjects, (b) your name being on the convocation list, (c) either attending convocation or applying for in-absentia certificate.
  • This is the document used for official government jobs, abroad education, verification by employers, etc.

Supplementary Degree Certificate:

  • This is issued when you have cleared all subjects AFTER the main convocation year — i.e., you had backlogs that you cleared later, and the convocation for your batch has already happened.
  • It's still a legitimate degree certificate — same legal standing. However, it may show "Supplementary" or a different issue date versus original batch graduation.
  • Some employers/government bodies may ask you to explain the difference — it's not a problem, just means you completed in extended time.

Provisional Certificate:

  • This is a THIRD document — a temporary certificate issued by your college (not SPPU directly) confirming degree completion, issued while waiting for the original degree from SPPU. Most employers accept this for background verification purposes.

For most practical purposes: All three are valid. The original degree from convocation carries the most weight for formal documentation.

The degree certificate and the supplementary degree certificate from Pune University are two different documents that serve different purposes. Here's a brief overview of the difference between the two:

  • Degree Certificate: The degree certificate is the main certificate issued by Pune University to a student who has successfully completed their course of study. It is issued only once and contains all the relevant information regarding the student's academic achievements, such as their name, course of study, marks obtained, and date of graduation. The degree certificate is an important document that serves as proof of a student's academic qualification and is required for various purposes, such as applying for jobs, pursuing higher studies, or immigration.
  • Supplementary Degree Certificate: A supplementary degree certificate, on the other hand, is issued to a student who has failed to clear one or more subjects in their final examination but has successfully passed the supplementary examination. The supplementary degree certificate is issued to provide the student with proof of their academic qualification and to acknowledge their efforts in clearing the failed subjects.

In summary, the main difference between the degree certificate and the supplementary degree certificate from Pune University is that the former is the main certificate issued to a student upon successful completion of their course, while the latter is an additional certificate issued to acknowledge the student's success in clearing failed subjects in the supplementary examination.

A supplementary degree certificate, also known as a provisional degree certificate, is granted immediately after you pass and clear the final year of the degree. It includes your final year grade sheet as well as your transfer certificate (college leaving certificate).

It is an emergency provision made by the university for students who are applying for jobs or who have already been hired and want to submit their credentials.

After passing and being cleared from the degree, you will be given the primary degree certificate. It is actually given after a period of roughly 6–8 months from the final year result. It is your choice to apply for it or not. Those who wish to apply, however, must first log into the university's convocation site and create an account. Pay the requisite application fee and collect the certificate at the convocation event.

The fundamental difference between a supplementary/provisional degree certificate and a main degree certificate is that the main certificate is awarded after you have received your supplementary/provisional degree certificate.
