Official SPPU grace mark rules (as per University Ordinance):
- Maximum 5 grace marks can be awarded in a single subject.
- Maximum grace marks per semester: 5 marks total (not per subject).
- Grace can ONLY be used to help a student pass (reach 40/100 threshold). It cannot be used to push from Pass to higher grade.
- Applicable only to university theory exam marks — NOT internal assessment.

- Grace marks are awarded automatically by the university — you don't need to apply. The exam section applies it if it helps you pass.
- If you need grace in multiple subjects, university policy typically grants it to ONE subject only (whichever brings you closest to passing).

One of my friends was a student in SPPU so I asked him about the policy for giving grace marks there. He mentioned a few scenarios where his batchmates received grace marks
- One of them received grace marks in an exam in which he actually scored 36. This course was from the 3rd semester. So he probably got grace marks because he had cleared all the subjects in the previous semesters.
- In the third year, he again secured 39 marks in DME and because he already has received grace marks before, he failed in the subjects. So once you get grace marks, it’s impossible to get it again.
- Another batchmate got a backlog when he was in the last semester of Engineering. He had got an offer from a good university for MS and therefore requested the university to give him grace marks although he had some backlogs in his 2nd and 3rd years the university granted him grace marks and he was awarded the degree.
So, to avail of grace marks at SPPU, one needs to have a good academic record. Usually, the limit of maximum marks is less than 10.

For engineering, the grace mark policies at Savitribai Phule Pune University are as follows.

Only one examination of a single course may be awarded the advantage of more than one Ordinance. The benefits of the above-mentioned Ordinances may be granted to candidates who are taking the test with a backlog and/or exemption if such an exemption/backlog system is available.
