Which college is better for an MBBS: the MAMC or VMMC?

SK
Sanjana Kapoor Posted On : September 25th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

Usually MAMC is the first choice of aspirants. But, a good number of students choose VMMC over MAMC despite getting really high ranks, and having a Delhi state quota. The reasons for this decision are-

  1. VMMC is much newer than MAMC, UCMS and LHMC. Thus, it offers a modern and fully air-conditioned infrastructure.
  2. Workload for the first 1-2 years is much lighter.
  3. There are only semester-end exams. Despite this, the education quality is top notch.
  4. VMMC offers the benefits of an internal PG quota.
  5. The batch strength is smaller. This facilitates better interaction with peers and professors.
  6. Safdarjung Hospital has the largest OPD in Asia with a dedicated Specialized Burns Unit. So you’ll get more opportunities to learn during postings and internship. There is an entirely separate Sports Injury Centre as well.
  7. The hostels are air conditioned, and the girls' hostel has no curfew. The library reading room remains open 24*7.
  8. VMMC is located in the heart of South Delhi. The best hangout spots like HKV, Dilli Haat, Promenade are all located at a close distance. SN market and South Ex are just 5 minute drive away.

Thus, I would recommend you choose VMMC for your MBBS degree.

How good or bad is CSE in NIT Patna?

AS
Aditi Sinha Posted On : August 31st, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Patna (2020)

NIT Patna is a decent choice for your CSE. The faculty isn’t top-notch and won’t really go out of their way to guide and support you. The curriculum is as challenging as any other Engineering institute.

The placements are witnessing an increase year on year. During 2021 placements, the highest package of 44 LPA was offered to a single student from B.Tech CSE by Adobe. Companies like Microsoft, Google, Samsung, and Amazon visit the campus for IT recruitment. IBM also recruits candidates from CSE. The average CTC during 2020 placements stood at INR 8.93 LPA for the CSE department.

The campus life at NIT Patna isn’t really great and the infrastructure is also not the best. Patna, however, offers coaching facilities for CAT/ IES/ GATE aspirants. Also, the new Bihta campus of NIT Patna is expected to come into existence soon.

Overall, NIT Patna CSE is a decent choice. You will be responsible for enhancing and polishing your skills through online platforms.

What is the effective difference in doing a MBBS from AIIMS and any other medical college in India (other than matters like prestige and fame), for instance AIIMS and CMC Ludhiana?

TA

AIIMS is an exceptionally good medical college often called the Harvard of the East. Only when you join it will you realize the plethora of opportunities it has to offer and how it stands apart from other colleges. Given below are some unique traits of AIIMS that set it apart from CMC Ludhiana specifically and any medical college in general

  • Peers: The quality of peer groups is unmatched as you will be surrounded by some of the most intellectual people in the world. The level of group discussions is unexceptionally high and it seems everyone is motivating each other
  • Faculty : Studying here gives you the opportunity to interact with some of the highest qualified and experienced professors. You will find authors of international books, leaders in research in their fields, and advisors to international committees.
  • Mindset : Everyone at AIIMS joins with a single goal and mindset, to excel. You know getting selected here means you are one of the best and so you have no choice but to get even better.
  • Patients : The patient flow is diverse from textbook cases to rare diseases. The OPS receives almost 10,000 patients every day.
  • Funds : AIIMS has an annual grant of around INR 1200 crore resulting in top-notch infrastructure and research opportunities for the students.
  • Research : AIIMS is the best college if you want to pursue research as a UG student. The faculty is extremely helpful and the huge funding paves the way to a healthy research culture.
  • International collaborations: Alumni can be seen working across the globe in top international universities. This may help in research electives and USMLE prospects.
  • Student faculty ratio : AIIMS easily surpasses the required student-faculty ratio guidelines.
  • Extracurriculars: AIIMS focuses on the holistic development of students and not just on academics. It organizes Pulse, the largest fest in a medical college in all of Southeast Asia. Additionally, it has excellent sports facilities.

How is it that IIIT Bangalore has much better placements than the CSE department of most of the top 10 NITs and still the cutoff is 8500? I mean it has a median salary of 15.9LPA then why so?

SK
Sanjana Kapoor Posted On : October 10th, 2023
IIIT Bangalore

First, let us discuss some reasons for the high placement records of IIIT Bangalore CSE department-

  1. IIIT Bangalore does not believe in the system of mugging before an exam and filling out the answer sheets.
  2. The curriculum is updated every few years, and assignments and projects are an important part of all courses.
  3. Unlike the NITs, IIITB won’t make you study irrelevant subjects in your first year. You’ll study only the subjects relevant to your CSE degree from the beginning itself.
  4. You’ll learn basic CS in the first few semesters. The rest of the semesters will be utilized in teaching you advanced topics like ML, AI, CV, NLP, etc.

Now the reasons for low cutoffs, despite high placements are-

  1. It is a public-private co-owned college. This is why its fees are much higher in comparison to NITs.
  2. The admissions are completely merit-based. This increases the availability of seats.
  3. There can be a huge rank difference between the second last admission, and the last admission. So one should not judge the merit of a college based on its cutoff ranks.
  4. IIITs are comparatively new in this race. Even then, they are growing at a tremendous speed.
  5. IIITB offers limited courses. It offers iM.Tech instead of B.Tech.

These are the reasons why iM.Tech CSE cutoffs are so low at IIIT Bangalore, while their placement records are better than even top NITs.

Which college is better for an MCh Neurosurgery: AIIMS Delhi or NIMHANS?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : June 1st, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

Both AIIMS and NIMHANS have been excellent institutes for neurosurgery. Both the institutes have their unique strengths and weaknesses. It’s better to weigh the pros and cons before coming to a final decision.

AIIMS Delhi

  • AIIMS has given birth to elite neurosurgeons and enjoys a great level of credibility and global recognition.
  • The neurosurgery department has top-notch infrastructure and all the modern facilities you could ask for.
  • There is a dedicated trauma center, in addition to cadaveric training and research facility, neurosurgical education and training school, and an animal dissection lab.

NIMHANS

  • NIMHANS is a dedicated mental health and neurosciences institute.
  • It has an NBRC - neurobiology research center which provides necessary resources for research and technology advancement.

Both AIIMS Delhi and NIMHANS are equally good in terms of the amount of work, patient management protocol, and infrastructure. The only issue at AIIMS Delhi is the increasing staff as a result of which the surgical work gets divided and residents get less work. NIMHANS on the other hand has a lesser faculty count which does not necessarily mean more work.

Ultimately, it’s your performance that determines your success and not your institute. Institute just lays down the stepping stones for your future.
