What is it like taking ECE in NIT Jamshedpur?
As an ECE student, you will be taught C and Data structures as a part of the ECE curriculum and not an extra subject. One needs to have good programming skills to excel in this branch. A skilled ECE engineer is someone who has a strong grasp of concepts as well as programming skills. He can easily get a job in core companies and need not opt for software-based jobs.
Electronics
- Writing code in Embedded C or some other assembly language for processors, controllers, and high-end boards.
- In the VLSI domain, you have to write code in Verilog or VHDL to design a circuit/ chips.
- In communication, MATLAB - a widely used computing tool - C like a simple programming language used in it.
Networks
- This requires a deep understanding of concepts and having to work with software and NW-related languages.
Overall, ECE students require good programming skills to apply/ test/ design their core concepts in the real world. Due to some similarities in the curriculum, many software companies allow ECE, and EEE students to sit with CS and IT for placements.
How are placements in ECE at NIT Agartala?
One of my relatives was once a Training and Placement Coordinator at NIT Agartala in 2019. Since the institute does not release official data on branch-wise placements, we will use the data from 2019 to get an idea of ECE placements at NIT Agartala.
- The ECE branch recorded a placement percentage of around 94%.
- Out of the total eligible students, 20% of the students were placed in core and the remaining were placed in IT.
- The highest package of INR 15 LPA was offered to an MTech student in core while in BTech, the highest package stood at INR 10 LP in IT.
- The average and lowest salaries were recorded at INR 6.5 LPA and INR 5.5 LPA.
- Most visiting companies are IT-based so one must be proficient in their respective subjects as well as in coding to bat good packages.
- A few top recruiters in the past are KPIT, L&T Const, L&T Ltd, Capgemini, Wipro, Accenture, Oracle, Samsung, Synopsis, etc.
- The packages students receive depend directly on their CGPA so never underestimate it.
Ultimately, ECE is an evergreen branch opening opportunities in both sectors.
How is an M.Tech from IIIT Delhi (ECE)?
The crowd for M.Tech ECE at IIIT Delhi usually comprises those students from tier 2 and 3 colleges who aren’t placed after their B.Tech. These students join the M.Tech program with the sole purpose of getting placed. They lack proper knowledge of the subjects for which they are chosen as TAs.
As TAs, they aren’t very helpful. Only some of them bother to solve students’ queries. The crowd lacks dedication and proper knowledge. The cooperation among themselves is weak too.
Basically, the course is decent. However, the peer group for M.Tech ECE isn’t up to the mark at IIIT Delhi.
Should I go for NIT Kurukshetra ECE or NIT Silchar CSE?
There are several parameters for drawing a comparison between these two colleges. Some of them are mentioned below-
- Placements- During 2023, B.Tech ECE at NIT Kurukshetra recorded 74.15% placements. The CTC range stood at 6-62.75 (LPA). The average package stood at 17.66 LPA, and the median package stood at 14.83 LPA. Some top recruiters from this college include Bharat Light & Power, Adani Group, Aakash, Accolite, Code Nation, Microsoft, Mahindra, ICICI Lombard, among others. But not all companies recruit ECE students.
During 2022 placements at NIT Silchar, the highest package went to INR 44 LPA and the average package stood at INR 13.58 LPA. The list of top recruiters included Amazon,Microsoft, Adobe, Arcesium and Intuit. For the CSE branch, out of 97 registered students, 82 were placed, and 126 offers were given to this branch in total.
- Location - NIT Silchar campus is spread across 600 acres, and is green and beautiful.The college has good connectivity through roads, railways and airways. NIT Kurukshetra is spread across 300 acres. You’ll find the campus green and serene. There are no hangout places as such, but at a minimal charge, you can visit Kurukshetra city in just 20 minutes.
- Infrastructure- NIT Kurukshetra has decent infrastructure and facilities. The buildings for computers and electronics departments are new and modern. Their labs are filled with all the equipment. The campus library is top notch. You’ll get a variety of books for reading and issuing purposes. The book bank offers up to 5 books for 6 months at a highly nominal price of Rs. 30 per book.
- Ranking- As per the NIRF 2023 rankings, among top 100 Engineering colleges, NIT Kurukshetra stands at 58th position and NIT Silchar stands at 40th position.
According to me, the choice is very subjective. You should make your decision after thoroughly considering the pros and cons of each college and department.
What should be the preference order: MNNIT Allahabad ECE, NIT Surathkal ECE, NIT Warangal ECE, MANIT Bhopal (hometown) ECE?
According to the NIRF 2020 rankings, MNNIT Allahabad was ranked 48th, NIT Surathkal was ranked 13th, NIT Warangal was ranked 19thand MANIT Bhopal was ranked 65th in India 2020 for B.Tech courses (including ECE). Admission to each institute is done on the basis of rank secured in JEE Main.

- NIT Warangal:
- 85.48% was the placement rate of NIT Warangal for theECE department.

- Students received an average salary of INR 10.67 LPA while the highest salary was INR 43 LPA.

- Top recruitersof NIT Surathkal are Axis Bank, Oyo, Microsoft, Amazon India, Samsung R & D, Myntra designs, Byjus, Uber India, Wipro Limited, Oracle India, etc.
- The highest salary package offered to the students was INR 39 LPA whereas the average salary was INR 14.15 LPA.
- MANIT Bhopal:
- Frequently visited companies in MANIT Bhopal are Microsoft, Infosys, Amazon, Maruti, CEAT, Bharat Petroleum Cooperation Limited, Hero, Bajaj, Oracle, Wipro, Cisco, TATA Consultancy services, etc.
- Students received an average salary of INR 6.23 LPA while the highest salary was INR 27 LPA.
Based on all the above facts and data, the preference order can be - NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal, MANIT Bhopal, and then MNNIT Allahabad (if you want an advantage of home state quota). Otherwise, you can also prefer the preference order as NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal, MNNIT Allahabad, and MANIT Bhopal.
How is ECE at BITS Hyderabad?
Like any other branch, ECE also demands your dedication and passion. Here are some important things to note about B.E. ECE at BITS Hyderabad-
With respect to placements, I can’t make any judgments. This is because placements are solely based on an individual’s skill set and academic record. The curriculum is quite diverse and contains a range of topics including Physics of semiconductors, machines and drives, signal processing, coding theory, etc.
Though the curriculum is diverse, you won’t be able to acquire an in-depth knowledge of any particular area. Moreover, the course is huge and time consuming. But, by diligently covering it, you’ll become confident and knowledgeable.
ECE is like any other branch at BITS Hyderabad (and the other campuses), and it is a myth that this branch is exceptionally tough and non scoring.
Which is better, BITS Hyderabad CSE or BITS Hyderabad ECE?
As a class 12th student, it is normal that you have a very limited knowledge of different fields in engineering.
Out of 8 semesters, the first 2 are the same for all branches at BITS. During these 2 semesters you’ll be taught one fundamental course from each branch and some engineering mathematics. In the 7th and 8th semester, you’ll choose open electives from your branch or other branches.
Now as for placements, you can choose some CS courses as your open electives during your ECE, which will help you for IT placements. Even though at present, people tend to focus only on CSE, the demand for ECE will rise in the coming years due to increasing growth in IOT, Smart sensors, Robotics and Communication systems.
Here are the important courses from both these branches-
- CSE- Object Oriented Prog (JAVA), Logic In Computer Sc., Discrete Structures, Principles Of Programming Languages, Data Structures & Algorithms, Database Systems, Computer Networks, Computer Architecture.
- ECE- Electrical Machines, Electromagnetic Theory, Electronic Devices, Communication Systems, EM Fields & Micro Engineering, Control Systems, Signals & Systems, Microelectronic Circuits, Common Courses Of ECE and CS, Digital Design, Microprocessors and Interfacing.
You can research a bit and then decide which branch will suit you the best. Overall, both these branches are really good, and you’ll have an amazing time at BITS Hyderabad.

How are placements for EEE and ECE at Manipal? Is ECE good at Manipal?

Usually, the average CTC of these branches era around INR 4-5 LPA.
Which is better if one is planning to apply for an MBA/PGDM from IIMs after graduation: ECE and/or CSE at NIT Durgapur, or IT at Jadavpur University? Why?
Let me share with you some important details about these courses/institutes-
- NIT Durgapur is a residential campus so you’ll get ample exposure during your undergraduate studies. On the other hand, JU doesn’t even offer IT on its main campus.
- NIT DGP is an Institute of National Importance. This makes it more significant on a national level.
- NIT Durgapur is seeing a growing number of recruitments in its CSE branch. Startups visit the campus with interesting offers for CSE students.
- The student community of NIT Durgapur is more diverse.
- NIT DGP has no political interference. JU, on the other hand, is heavily influenced by state politics.
- In terms of extracurricular activities, JU is a better choice.
- The CSE/ECE departments of NIT DGP lack good infrastructure, have inconsistent course structure and content, and have a low teacher-student ratio. These departments lack quality research work.
- Phd.s in the CSE department of NIT Dgp are low in number.
- But NIT DGP carries the much-valued ‘NIT’ tag.
That being said, I feel you are at a very early stage of narrowing down your goals and aspirations to this extent. Enter your UG with an open mind, and an aim for self-discovery. Right now, you have a picture in mind of doing an MBA. But I don’t think you have a proper idea of the different specializations in this degree.
You should have made a clear decision by the end of your 3rd year. Before that, pursue internships and discover your field of interest. Right now, look for the institute that will offer you the best technical education and the best future prospects.
