What is the University of Oklahoma and the surrounding area like?

MB
Matthew Brown Posted On : February 4th, 2021
Studied at University of Oklahoma (2017)

Overall, University of Oklahoma has a great life based in the town of Norman. It has a beautiful campus with good landscaping and huge trees. You will definitely love walking to classes in spring. Additionally, the architecture has a sort of Gothic feel to it with a huge library. Do check out the Great Reading Room in the library.

There are also some fraternities and sororities on campus. Rent and housing prices are also quite affordable since the town is small. The old homes near the campus are pricier. Some amazing things you should know about OU:

  • There is a good football life on campus and the enthusiasm is quite contagious. Do go watch the Sooners play if you get the chance.
  • There is beautiful Cherokee Gothic architecture around the campus which is quite popular among the masses.
  • The university is also affiliated with Universities Research Association, Association of Public Land grant universities and is also accredited by Higher Learning Commission.
  • There are rumours that the college lacks cultural diversity but is listed as a Tier 2 institute.

The campus is quite big (Around 3000 acres I think) and you will be able to avail a number of student services too. You should definitely visit the campus library and museums. Another major perk is that cars are allowed on campus, which will help you navigate around faster.

Norman is a great town and is quite safe. Best part is, it will probably take you about 20 minutes to get from one end of the town to another. There are a couple of Walmarts, Targets and Victoria’s with grocery stores littered all over the town. Overall, you can expect to have a decent university life and affordable living at Norman and University of Oklahoma.

What are some useful tips for students starting their first semester at Syracuse University?

AC
Albie Cladwell Posted On : April 16th, 2022
BS Chemical Engineering & Chemistry, Syracuse University

Here are some tips that can help your first semester at Syracuse University smoother.

  • Don’t commit to a major immediately. You don’t need to worry if you don’t know what you want to do. Know that almost everyone is on the same boat. Freshman year is best for experiments. Try to get good grades in those easy first-semester classes, so that you will have many options open when you are ready to make a decision.
  • Explore everything that you find interesting, but don’t try to fit in fast to avoid being alone.
  • Living with a stranger is difficult for obvious reasons. So, try to adjust and support them in little ways when you can.
  • At Syracuse, Fall stays only for a limited time. Try to be outside as much as possible in the Fall.
  • Winters are pretty bad at Syracuse. The city has the largest snowplow in the world. So prepare accordingly. Invest in the best winter boots and coats.

You can checkout Feagan for good food and beer. Their nachos and chicken salads are pretty good. Roji Tea Lounge in downtown Syracuse has the best Japanese cookies and tea.

AN
Anil Nadadur Posted On : January 11th, 2021
Computer Scientist, Entrepreneur, Traveler

Both SUNY Binghamton and FSU are highly ranked in terms of salary as per PayScale College Salary Reports. They are ranked well by other reports like emolument as well so you can rest assured about their employment reports. On average, their graduates earn 103,000-113,000 USD. Still, you may have some requirements or reasons of your own to consider so here is a rough comparison of both the universities for their MS in Computer Science:

Please note that the salary mentioned is sector wise and it will vary with the choice of your major. Other factors like scholarships, tuition cost, location, residence and expenses will play a major role in your choice.

SUNY Binghamton has an edge over FSU because of:

  • Ease of admission indicated by its higher acceptance rate
  • Average Salary of its CS graduates
  • Overall graduation rate
  • More Scholarship opportunities ranging from 1,000 USD upto 20,000 USD
  • More internships and job opportunities due to its location as compared to a rather isolated location of Florida State University

Nevertheless, it can be said that while all both are in the same league, SUNY Binghamton is slightly better in terms of opportunities and average starting salaries.

How good is the University of California, Santa Barbara's Computer Science department for undergraduates?

EC
Eugene Cooper Posted On : April 16th, 2022
studied Hydrology & Computing at University of California, Santa Barbara

UCSB has a decent Computer Science department. The department is smaller compared to the other UCs. Students get equal attention from faculties. Overall, UCSB campus is friendlier, you can adjust easily to the environment. US News ranking ranked the CS department of UCSB 28th in the country.

The curriculum is a combination of basic programming, surveys of numerical methods, programming languages and compilers, automata theory, algorithm and data structures, etc. UCSB CS faculties are accomplished researchers and teach well.

As per Payscale, CS graduates from UCSB earn around $76k - $137k.

Being a small department, it isn’t good in all domains of CS. For instance, there aren’t any faculty members at UCSB who are pursuing research in hardcore Machine Learning. So, if you are interested in a particular area of CS, take it into consideration while choosing the institute.

I have admits from Portland state university and san jose state university, which should I choose for MS in electrical engineering?

JM
Jocelyn Moore Posted On : February 3rd, 2021
B.S International Business, San Jose State University (2018)

Both Portland and San Jose are good in their own ways. The admission intake for both the schools takes place in the fall season. Here’s a gist of both:

San Jose State University

The university is good for majors like Engineering, Computer Science and Business. The location of the institute is in Silicon Valley where every semester a job fair is organized. Many big companies participate in this job fair and offer great opportunities which are quite helpful. Apple and Google companies have hired many SJSU students. The weather is very pleasant throughout the year, neither too hot nor too cold.

Portland State University

The institute is located in a cold, lovely and manageable little city. The people there are quite warm and friendly. The institute has been ranked #801 for engineering by Times Higher Education 2021 (international).

San Jose State University Portland State University
Tuition fee for the 1st year (international students) $ 16,283 $ 21,105
Acceptance rate 55% 96%
International students’ percentage 12% 6%
Delivery type Full-time Full-time

On looking at the above information about expenses, location of the city, atmosphere of the city, etc. whichever seems suitable for you, you can choose that.

Is Florida State University better than the University of Central Florida?

JM

B.A Computer Science & French, Florida State University (2021)

Both Florida State University and the University of Central Florida are reputed universities. You should choose one of these, according to what you wish to major in.

FSU is widely reputed for its Entertainment, Screenwriting, and Film Production courses. Admission to these courses is fiercely competitive.

UCF was established later than FSU but it is well-known for its Engineering, Business, Hospitality, and Entertainment program. Getting into UCF is more difficult compared to FSU.

The video comprises a comparative analysis of both universities

Here is a brief comparison of both colleges.

Parameters  Florida State University  University of Central Florida
Ranking  #475 QS World University Ranking  #751-800 QS World University Ranking
Acceptance rate  32.5% 45.2%
Tuition fee (approx)  $18,796 $30,000 - $42,000
Average salary package  $65,000 $67,000

As can be seen from the above table, UCF and FSU graduates receive similar basic salary packages. UCF has a large student crowd. Because of that, the university offers more courses online.
