The choice of subjects for doing an MTech depends on your inclinations and also your engineering background. In my opinion, the best bet would be Microelectronics or digital electronics and communication.
- The intake for Microelectronics is limited so your rank needs to be pretty good to increase chances of selection. The intake is more for other branches.
- The Subjects also almost remain the same with a variation of three subjects and labs.
- Microelectronics students will be working on cadence and verilog whereas Digital Electronics and Communication students will be working with Matlab. You have the freedom to learn both.
Additionally, there is a branch called the School of Information Science (SOIS) that offers a degree equivalent to an MTech degree which is MS. Its course is at or with industrial trends. The overall curriculum focuses more on lab work than theoretical knowledge. The courses offered here are embedded systems and VLSI digital electronics.
In all, MS offers a better hands-on experience but MTech is a better choice if you want to pursue teaching.

Additionally, IIT Guwahati also offers immense exposure through foreign exchange programs. IIT Guwahati has collaborations with various reputed universities and can be preferred over NITs.
However, if it's the jobs you are after, then NIT is a better option as it’s more accessible to employers. Still, IIT Guwahati will always be my first preference. Be it a job or higher education, IITs always give an edge to other engineering institutes.

M.Tech from NIT Jalandhar is not particularly useful for placement in manufacturing technology.
The reality is that M.Tech from NIT Jalandhar is like any other college, and NIT Jalandhar only focuses on placement for their Undergraduate students, though they may arrange a placement drive for M.Tech students if necessary. So, if a student is exceptionally bright and possesses exceptional practical knowledge, he will be chosen for campus placement.
Another issue is that there aren't enough companies in the region with manufacturing technology backgrounds.
How is the MTech ECE placement from IIT Kharagpur?
MTech placements for the ECE branch at IIT Kharagpur depend a lot on your specialization.
Those under VLSI and VIPES get placed with great packages and there are almost cent percent placements for them. VLSI students are usually offered core jobs in contrast to VIPES which offers both core and non-core jobs. There are a lot of software profiles offered to VIPES students.
