How is the metallurgy department at NIT Surathkal?

AD
Anik Dhar Posted On : September 15th, 2023
M.Tech from National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2018)

The Metallurgy department of NIT Surathkal is decent and the prospect it offers depends more on what you want after your engineering. It has now become Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, to cater to the growing requirement for materials science and engineering, the department gives more importance to materials engineering than traditional metallurgy. Here are a few highlights of the branch

  • The batch size is smaller than other departments like Mech, EC, EE, and Civil.
  • The curriculum needs a bit of revision but the branch as a whole is decent.
  • The materials engineering courses are excellent and provide enough knowledge to pursue higher studies in this field.
  • The department facilities are not at par with NIT standards.
  • The department has one SEM and XRD, a decent heat treatment lab, a metallography lab, and a materials testing lab.

Ultimately, the Metallurgy branch of NIT Surathkal has a decent scope. If you want to land a job after graduation, then the branch and even the institute do not matter. Your grades and skills come into play.

Who is/was the most inspiring senior at IIT Mandi?

SS
Shubham Saxena Posted On : March 20th, 2021
Studied B.Tech Computer Science Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi (2022

Swapnil Sharma, a CS student at IIT Mandi and Shreyas Bapat of first year. He's a man who did Gsoc in Open Astronomy, placed around 40 lakh packages in Code Nation, and still contributes to SunPy for Summer of Code in Space even after placement. He had been earning freelancing since his first year. His belief in the productiveness of time usage is awesome, and that would continue to inspire students throughout their college life.

Likewise, Shreyas is a kind of person who would not want to include some points in his resume that others would find lucky to have; because this guy has done a lot of hell! He gave a flash talk at PyCon India, where eminent personalities like the creator of the Pandas Python Library were present. He has created his own organization, Einstein, which is selected for Socis and can be selected for Gsoc next year, and Shreyas is in charge of the 3rd year Btech students at IIT Bombay and Georgia Tech University. Although his branch is electrical, he is probably one of the best astro-python developers in the world.

These two seniors are the most inspiring seniors of IIT Mandi, and they both are also ex-coordinators of Space Technology and Astronomy Cell, (STAC) which is an internationally renowned Astronomy club at IIT Mandi.

Is Bits Hyderabad CSE good and worth joining?

AS
Aliya Sherawat Posted On : May 4th, 2026

yes, BITS Hyderabad CSE is absolutely worth joining. it's one of the best CSE programs you can get in India outside of the IITs, and in some ways better than mid-tier IITs.

here's why it stands out:

  • zero attendance policy — academic freedom is unmatched. you choose how to spend your time. this is a massive advantage for self-motivated learners who want to build projects, do internships, or pursue research
  • Practice School (PS): mandatory 5-6 month industrial internship program through BITS. PS companies include Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, DE Shaw, Qualcomm, Nvidia. this is a huge differentiator
  • Placements: 2024 placement avg was ~Rs.20-24 LPA, median ~Rs.15-18 LPA. high packages from product companies. consistent 95%+ placement
  • Dual degree options: BE + MSc combinations give you deeper specialization

the valid concerns:

  • Hyderabad campus is younger than Pilani, so the campus culture and alumni network are less established
  • cutoff via BITSAT is high — you need ~360/390+ for Hyderabad CSE
  • fees are ~Rs.6L/year, higher than govt colleges

if you're getting BITS Hyderabad CSE, it's a definite yes. it beats most NITs and IIITs on academic freedom, industry exposure, and peer quality. the only trade-offs are fees and the campus being newer than Pilani.

How is SPJIMR's placement report better than IIMs including IIM Calcutta and as good as IIM Ahmedabad (both Average and Median)?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : July 7th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Here are a few possible reasons why SPJIMR placements are better than or equally good as IIMs

  • SPJIMR has a much smaller batch size in comparison to IIMs and thus the average rises.
  • SPJIMR has a very rigorous selection process that filters the best students and the recruiters are well aware of this.
  • SPJIMR enjoys a great location maximizing the exposure and opportunities rendered to the students.
  • The students perform exceptionally well in the placement interviews and thus secure high packages.

It's important to note that these reasons are just based on speculations and it cannot be exactly determined why some placements are better than others.

Why should I join Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College?

KH
Krishnendu Halder Posted On : May 5th, 2021
B.Tech in Computer Science & Mathematics, Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College, graduated 2019

A senior of mine also used to be a student of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College (JGEC). This college is usually chosen when you have not got a satisfactory ranking in AIEEE, IIT.

An engineering job at the conclusion of four years is defined by 60% ability, 30% luck, and 10% other characteristics. Colleges and institutions can only do so much in this regard. So why choose a private college instead of opting for a Government college. This will let you save some money. Some other features are:

  • There is ample scope for you to inculcate in things of your interest.
  • Interactions with the seniors can help you make connections in the future. They are very friendly.
  • You will be dealing with the best of equipment, like sports equipment, etc. Everything is funded by the government.
  • You can also pack your bags and go on a little trip to North Bengal to the hills.
  • The facilities in the college are very good. The workshops and labs are excellent.
  • Books passed down from the seniors would be enough. You will also find books in the library so many students do not have to even buy the books.

Apart from these, the college also holds a fest which is one of the best in North-East India.

What are the questions asked in an interview for the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) if applying for direction (films)?

ST
Sandeepa Thakre, Posted On : November 23rd, 2021
Studied at Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) (2016)

One of my friends studied in FTII Pune. Let me share the information I got to know from him.

After clearing the entrance exam, you should have a basic idea of what could be asked. They usually look for your observation skills.

  • The first thing you should know is how Cinema is treated as a representation of actuality.
  • You will have to be aware of the History of Cinema. Starting from the Lumiere Brothers to Edison’s films.
  • Try and be your honest self.
  • Your observation on simple things like a scenic view or a day to day activity would be asked to explain in your own words.
  • Do not try to exaggerate. Listen to what they are asking and answer accordingly. Avoid using any technical terminology.
  • Share your experiences with cinema.

It is suggested to keep a positive mind and attitude. Approach it more like a conversation than an interview.
