I got 99.2 percentile in the JEE Mains January 2021 attempt. Which branches can I get in NIT Trichy?

AK
Abhimanyu Kumar Posted On : August 31st, 2021
B. Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad (2020)

With a percentile this high, you can try going for JEE Advanced. If you still want to try NIT Trichy you can get Metallurgy, Chemical, Production Engineering, Civil, Instrumentation and Control, and some other lower branches. However, you should be a candidate belonging to the General category. You can also get Computer Science and Mechanical if you are in the OBC category.

If you are a candidate of the home state then you can get the streams mentioned previously as well as ECE, EEE, and CSE.

What possible branches could I get in NIT Trichy with a score of 168 in the JEE Mains 2021 paper 1?

AR

B.Tech from National Institute of Technology ,Tiruchirappalli,Tamil Nadu

Admission in NIT Trichy has seats reserved for the students belonging to the states of Tamil Nadu. Therefore there is some quota that benefits certain students.

  • If you are from outside Tamil Nadu and belong to the general category then with 165 marks you may get Production Engineering or something related to the production department. Some of my seniors got admission to the production department in NIT Trichy, two years back, and they had almost the same marks.
  • In the second case if you belong to the state of Tamil Nadu and are from the general category then the chances are better for getting core or better branches. You may get branches such as MME, production engineering, or chemical engineering.
  • If you don’t belong to Tamil Nadu and are from the OBC category then you can expect branches like Instrumentation and control, Civil which is one of the core branches, MME, Production, Chemical. The chances for this gets even better if you are from Tamil Nadu and belong to the OBC category.
  • If you are from SC and ST category then you will be able to get even better branches however it’s less likely to get CSE or ECE.

Here is the 2020 cutoff for NIT Trichy.

Courses  General
HS  OS
B.Arch  252-415 282-615
B.Tech CSE 163-564 1000-4358
B.Tech ECE 847-2358 3043-7112
B.Tech EEE 954-4057 7490-10081
B.Tech ME 2468-4959 7258-13069
B.Tech CE 5541-11245 14883-26516
B.Tech MME 12765-16649 23195-32666
B.Tech PE  11790-16631 16285-24209

The cutoffs are known to change every year and with no certainty and predictability. It can only be confirmed after the first few rounds of counseling. The opening and the closing rank of a particular department sometimes varies by 2k in the general category and more in the quota.

Which one should I opt for NIT Trichy B.Tech Mechanical Engineering or NIT Rourkela B.Tech Electronics & Communication Engineering

F
ForgottenTomb Posted On : March 31st, 2026

Both colleges are almost at par with each other, making it difficult to choose between the two. The placement statistics for Mechanical Engineering at NIT Trichy and Electronics & Communication Engineering at NIT Rourkela are quite similar. In this case, I suggest you opt for a branch based on your interests. Review the syllabus for both Mechanical and Electronics branches and decide which one appeals to you more. Electronics & Communication is a circuital branch, allowing you to sit for placements in tech companies, while Mechanical Engineering is a core branch, leading to placements in core companies. If you are inclined towards tech work, consider NIT Rourkela; otherwise, choose NIT Trichy. Additionally, consider practical factors such as distance from home, food variety, and culture. NIT Trichy has a South-dominant culture, while NIT Rourkela has a North-dominant culture and cuisine. The primary mode of communication at NIT Trichy is English, whereas it is Hindi/Odia at NIT Rourkela.

Should I go for B.Tech Computer Science Engineering in NIT Trichy or B.Tech Mathematics and Computing in IIT Hyderabad?

W
WanderingScholar Posted On : March 31st, 2026

NIT Trichy for B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering has a strong reputation for placements, boasting a nearly 98% placement rate with the highest package reaching 60 LPA and a median package of 14 LPA, making it quite competitive. Internships are also well-supported, with seniors securing impressive stipends. On the other hand, IIT Hyderabad’s B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing is also prestigious, but it may not have the same level of established placement statistics readily available. If you’re leaning toward tech roles and want a robust placement track record, NIT Trichy might be the safer bet, while IIT Hyderabad could be a better fit if you're interested in a blend of mathematics and computing as it offers a unique perspective in a high-demand field. Choose based on your career goals and interests!

Which one should I opt for NIT Trichy B.Arch or NIT Calicut B.Arch

P

I am not much sure about NIT Trichy’s Arch department. However, I can guarantee that you won’t regret studying B.Arch in NIT Calicut. With Trichy, the cons are its location and weather. But with Calicut, the weather is very good. Second, Calicut's Arch department building is just wow! Plus, the faculty is good there. So you can opt based on your preference.

Should I go for B.Tech Instrumentation & Control Engineering in NIT Trichy or B.Tech Artificial Intelligence in NIT Surathkal?

E
EnigmaticEye Posted On : March 30th, 2026

Hi...Ok...so Instrumentation and Control Engineering is a unique, circuit-oriented branch, and the academic structure at NIT Trichy is excellent, making you eligible for most companies that visit campus. Placements are decent. This branch has a good scope as well. If you're not familiar with what it entails, it focuses on sensor manufacturing. Just look around you and see how many sensors are part of your daily life. That's the potential! You might feel at some point that you left the core branch of Mechanical Engineering, which is also offered at MNNIT Allahabad. It's definitely an evergreen branch; you'll always find opportunities in the market, no matter the situation. People are generally more aware of Mechanical Engineering, but few know about Instrumentation and Control Engineering if you ask around. NIT Trichy is ranked higher than MNNIT Allahabad in every aspect. NIT Trichy is ranked 1st, while MNNIT Allahabad is around 4th or 5th, if I remember correctly. I chose NIT Trichy over MNNIT Allahabad, and being from U.P., I can confidently say it was the right decision. I opted for Metallurgy at NIT Trichy over other branches at MNNIT Allahabad. I wasn't getting any core branch there, by the way. I've learned and improved in many ways that I wouldn't have otherwise.

How do the placements really compare between NIT Trichy B.Tech Electrical and Electronics Engineering and IIT Indore B.Tech Metallurgical and Materials Engineering?

R
RogueRabbit Posted On : March 28th, 2026

I’ve looked into the placements for NIT Trichy B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and IIT Indore B.Tech in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, and it’s clear that NIT Trichy generally has the edge in terms of job prospects. They have a strong track record with tech giants and consistent on-campus internships, which really boost employability. IIT Indore offers great opportunities too, but the Metallurgical and Materials field can sometimes be niche, leading to fewer opportunities compared to the broader electrical field at NIT Trichy. If you’re aiming for a tech-focused career, NIT Trichy would be a safer bet, while IIT Indore might be better if you’re passionate about materials engineering and willing to navigate a more specialized job market.

RadiantTerra Posted On : March 19th, 2026

NIT Trichy’s B.Tech in Production Engineering offers a solid placement record with an 80% placement rate and a high package of 56 LPA, making it appealing for those seeking a practical, industry-oriented program. The tuition fees are around 2.5 lakhs per year, and there are various scholarships based on family income, which can make it financially viable. On the other hand, IIIT Bangalore's B.Tech + M.Tech in Computer Science offers a unique dual degree that can lead to advanced roles in tech, but the total cost is about 6 to 7 lakhs for the entire program with fewer details on placement statistics. If you’re aiming for a quick ROI and a clear path into production roles, go for NIT Trichy; however, if tech innovation excites you and you’re okay with a higher investment, IIIT Bangalore is a great choice.
