IIT Delhi is the clear winner here.
Reasons include:
Additionally, IIT Delhi is located in the heart of Delhi (specifically South Delhi) and is conveniently close to the Delhi airport. There are plenty of restaurants, malls, theatres, and bars to enjoy on weekends.
In contrast, the nearest city to IIT Kharagpur is Kolkata, which is about 140 km away. The closest decent restaurant to IIT Kharagpur is a Domino’s outlet, and it doesn’t even deliver pizzas inside the campus!
Also, while I usually don’t put much stock in QS Rankings, it’s worth noting that they rank IIT Delhi higher than IIT Kharagpur.
Cheers!

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Energy Engineering stands out for its vibrant campus life and world-class faculty, offering a challenging curriculum that prepares you for real-world problems. However, if you're looking for a more hands-on approach and a diverse range of subjects, IIT Kharagpur's Instrumentation Engineering could be more appealing, especially given its competitive placement opportunities. While IIT Delhi has an edge in terms of overall prestige and placement stats, IIT Kharagpur might provide a more well-rounded experience with practical applications.
Personally, I'd lean towards IIT Delhi for its strong focus on energy and technology, but if you're more interested in instrumentation and a broader engineering foundation, IIT Kharagpur could be the better fit.
You can easily land non-core jobs here! Many companies are coming to recruit. However, I don't have much knowledge about Agricultural and Food Engineering.
Two students studied OENA at IIT KGP. One is now a successful analyst at CITIBANK after completing a dual degree in OENA + MBA from VGSOM while in college. The other is about to graduate from Harvard Business School.
What I'm trying to say is that you can find success in OENA, but it's rare in the core field. Pursue OENA if you want, but consider switching to better opportunities. This generally holds true for all branches at all colleges, except CS.
I think if you're looking for a better financial return, B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering at IIT Kharagpur is a smarter choice. The tuition fees at IIT Delhi are relatively higher, with around 1.8 lakh per semester compared to Kharagpur's 1 lakh, and while both colleges have solid placement records, Kharagpur's recent highest package of 4 crore for international roles is really impressive. Plus, IIT Kharagpur provides a more extensive range of internship opportunities and campus placements start earlier, which could lead to better job prospects sooner. However, if you have a strong passion for energy and want to contribute to that field, IIT Delhi's Energy Engineering program offers unique value despite its higher cost. Ultimately, go for IIT Kharagpur if ROI is your priority; choose IIT Delhi if your heart lies in energy solutions.
Hello there! The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur is the oldest IIT, established in 1950 but starting in 1951. Since then, the Department of Electrical Engineering has been actively engaged in teaching and research, equipped with modern laboratories and an excellent faculty. This is a core branch, and the department offers two undergraduate programs: electrical engineering and instrumentation engineering. Placement and job opportunities are outstanding! The career development center works hard to ensure that everyone gets placed. A large number of companies visit the campus for recruitment starting in December. All final year students can apply to companies in their respective fields. Generally, the packages and number of job opportunities in software development and data analytics are higher compared to core branches like electrical, civil, and mechanical engineering. For software roles, packages are around 15 LPA, while for core branches, it's about 8-10 LPA.
The companies that visited the campus during the placement season include:
IIT Delhi's Electrical Engineering Department is top-notch. They have outstanding faculty. IITD also boasts interdisciplinary centers, offering more opportunities for collaboration. IIT Madras features excellent lab facilities and strong industrial ties. If you're focused on controls, IIT Bombay has a dedicated “Systems and Control” department. For heavy computational work, IISc provides the best resources, but for graduate studies, IITD's resources are more than adequate. Hope this helps!
I would lean towards B.Tech Computer Science Engineering in IIT Kharagpur over B.Tech Civil Engineering in IIT Delhi. While IIT Delhi has a strong faculty and a rigorous curriculum, IIT Kharagpur tends to have a broader range of opportunities in tech with placements from top companies like Google and Amazon, and the potential for higher salary packages. Campus life at IIT Kharagpur seems vibrant with significant extracurricular activities and events, giving a well-rounded experience. If you're more inclined towards technology and innovative fields, IIT Kharagpur is the way to go; however, if you're passionate about civil engineering and its applications, IIT Delhi is still a fantastic option.
