Should I go for B.Tech Textile Technology in IIT Delhi or B.Tech Electrical Engineering in IIT Kharagpur?

G

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Textile Technology offers a more manageable curriculum that allows for a balanced student life, which is great if you want to explore extracurriculars or startups. The faculty-to-student ratio is impressive, and the placements seem solid with a 90% success rate, but the highest package isn't as high as what IIT Kharagpur offers. On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering comes with a rigorous curriculum and a robust placement scene, featuring high packages reaching up to 2.5 crore LPA. If you’re up for a challenging academic environment and want to maximize your earning potential, IIT Kharagpur might be the better fit. But if you prefer a more relaxed pace and want to dive into diverse activities, IIT Delhi is a solid choice.

How do the placements really compare between IIT Delhi B.Tech Electrical Engineering and IIT Kharagpur B.Tech Metallurgical and Materials Engineering?

R
RogueRiddle Posted On : April 19th, 2026

I’m not from the Metallurgical and Materials Science department, but I’ve spoken to a few people from there and gathered some statistics. Here’s a rough idea:

First of all, most students are not pursuing higher studies. So, if you’re focused on placements, this is what you need to know. There are a few core companies that recruit from this department, but many students end up exploring other options, including data analytics and various other profiles. So, the stats below don’t necessarily reflect core placements.

The stats don’t guarantee placements. Only a handful of students secure jobs compared to other departments. Now, let’s look at the average packages:

  • 50–60% of those who were placed actually received packages.
  • Again, many of them found positions in non-core companies.

Conclusion: If you’re aiming for placements rather than further studies, this department may not ensure a good placement. The number of core companies recruiting is limited, which leads many students to pursue non-core opportunities.

How do the placements really compare between IIT Delhi B.Tech Electrical Engineering and IIT Kharagpur B.Tech Mining Engineering + M.Tech Safety Engineering?

Joining IIT Kharagpur is beneficial because it trains you for non-core placements. This IIT focuses heavily on the placement of its students. You also have the option to choose a minor course during your second year. A great example is that many students opt for electrical engineering as a minor while pursuing other branches, like metallurgy.

If you think you might have a second chance at JEE Advanced, keep in mind that not everyone is successful. You can also engage in discussions on the JEE counselling 2016–17 Facebook group, where you'll get answers from thousands of IITians. Search for it on Facebook and explore the opportunities!

Should I go for B.Tech Electrical Engineering in IIT Delhi or B.Tech + M.Tech Chemical Engineering in IIT Kharagpur?

IIT Delhi for B.Tech in Electrical Engineering is a great choice if you're looking for prestige and high-quality faculty, but the fees can be a burden since they are nearing private college levels. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech + M.Tech in Chemical Engineering offers a solid curriculum with a better student-faculty ratio and a more affordable fee structure, making it a smarter financial choice for many. Both colleges boast good placement rates, but IIT Kharagpur might provide better ROI given the dual degree and lower costs. If you prioritize immediate financial relief and a future-proof career in Chemical Engineering, go for IIT Kharagpur; if you're more passionate about Electrical Engineering and willing to invest, then IIT Delhi is worth it.

Which one should I opt for IIT Delhi B.Tech Mathematics and Computing or IIT Kharagpur B.Tech Mechanical Engineering

I
IronIcon Posted On : April 19th, 2026

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing offers a rigorous curriculum with a heavy focus on advanced math and computer science, which is perfect for those aiming for high-paying roles in tech and finance, especially quant firms. The campus life is vibrant with numerous clubs and top-notch facilities, and the placement statistics are impressive, with companies like Jane Street offering jaw-dropping packages. On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering is also a solid choice, but it might not have the same level of internship opportunities in cutting-edge fields like quant trading. If you love math and want to dive deep into tech, I would personally pick IIT Delhi, but if you're more inclined towards traditional engineering and a broader range of industries, IIT Kharagpur could be the better fit.

Which one should I opt for IIT Delhi B.Tech Civil Engineering or IIT Kharagpur B.Tech Electrical Engineering

Honestly, if placements are a major concern, you’d be better off choosing DTU Computer Science over any core branch. Opportunities in core branches are quite limited.

IIT Delhi Civil Engineering:

  • It’s an overall academically relaxed department.
  • Known for hosting the best dinners and meetings.
  • Offers a pathway into civil services (many students pursue this).
  • Opportunities in consulting (you need to build the right profile).
  • Some students land product management and marketing roles.
  • Software engineering jobs are available, but nothing too fancy.

IIT Kharagpur Electrical Engineering:

  • It’s a challenging institute with a tough grading scheme.
  • However, placement-wise, it’s pretty decent—at least on par or better than IIT Delhi Civil.

I don’t have much knowledge about the computational branch at IIT Hyderabad, and I’m skeptical if there is one.

Should I go for B.Tech Civil Engineering in IIT Delhi or B.Tech Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering in IIT Kharagpur?

Go for the following priorities:

  • 1. IIT Hyderabad - Computational. This will ensure an excellent, high-paying job in the IT sector.
  • 2. IIT Kanpur - Mechanical. This will secure a good, high-paying job in the Mechanical sector. You can also land a job in the IT sector since IT companies allow students from all branches to participate in their placement process.
  • 3. IIT Delhi - Civil. You may not get a very high-paying job in the Civil sector.

How do the placements really compare between IIT Delhi B.Tech Mathematics and Computing and IIT Kharagpur B.Tech + M.Tech Chemical Engineering?

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing offers a rigorous curriculum focused on high-level mathematics and computer science, making it ideal for those aiming for tech and quant roles, with impressive placements, where top firms like Jane Street offer staggering packages. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech + M.Tech in Chemical Engineering provides a more traditional engineering experience, though I can imagine placement stats being strong as well, especially in the chemical and energy sectors. However, IIT Delhi seems to have an edge in terms of overall student experience, campus life, and exposure to cutting-edge tech companies.

Personally, I would choose IIT Delhi for its dynamic environment and superior placement opportunities, especially if you have a knack for mathematics and computing. If you lean more towards chemical engineering with a focus on long-term stability, then IIT Kharagpur is still a solid choice.

Which one should I opt for IIT Delhi B.Tech Industrial & Production Engineering or IIT Kharagpur B.Tech Electrical Engineering

D
DreamingDartfrog Posted On : April 18th, 2026

Instrumentation Engineering is considered a solid branch, and the curriculum is quite engaging. Many students find it more aligned with their needs than even Electrical Engineering.

There’s a slight disadvantage in non-core placements compared to IIT Delhi. For instance, Bain and AT Kearney don’t hire from IIT Kharagpur, but the overall opportunities in consulting and other non-core areas are promising. Last year, Deutsche Bank had no interns from IIT Delhi, while it had five from IIT KGP. Statistics and figures can vary quite a bit.

Consulting companies typically don’t hire during the placement season at IIT Kharagpur and aren’t bound by the institute's administrative processes. They usually recruit around August and September, and their hiring processes are similar to those at other institutes. They even allow students who have received a PPO from their internships to participate in their selection process, which isn’t common elsewhere. It’s a slight advantage, but still a positive aspect!

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering offers outstanding placements and a plethora of internship opportunities with top companies like Google and Amazon, which can lead to lucrative packages. In contrast, while IIT Kharagpur’s B.Tech in Electrical Engineering also has a strong curriculum and good prospects, it may not match the sheer volume of high-profile internship options that IIT Delhi provides. The vibrant campus life and strong industry connections at IIT Delhi create a more favorable environment for career growth. If you’re aiming for a higher placement package and diverse opportunities, IIT Delhi is the better choice; however, if you have a specific interest in electrical engineering and prefer Kharagpur’s offerings, it still holds its ground.
