The planned facility, spanning ground plus three floors, is designed to replace the aging infrastructure that currently accommodates the Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Research (ICER), as mentioned in an official release.
The upcoming building will incorporate state-of-the-art features, including laboratories, classrooms, seminar rooms, meeting spaces, a library, and computing facilities.
The construction is being executed by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and is slated for completion by March 2026. ICER's research endeavors encompass various domains of renewable energy, such as developing net-zero technology for green hydrogen generation, employing supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) for emission reduction, advancing power and turbine technology, and exploring clean coal technology.
They are also engaged in pioneering research and development initiatives focused on green energy technologies, including the production of hydrogen and other biofuels from biomass, advancements in batteries and energy storage systems, and the exploration of sustainable technologies.
Aim for Renewable Energy Generation and Reduce Carbon Emissions
During the event, Minister Singh remarked that by 2030, there is a plan to decrease fossil fuel consumption by 50% and concurrently augment the country's renewable energy production capacity. As per the release, he stated that in addition to the existing 500 GW of renewable energy generation, an extra 25 GW is set as a target for the upcoming year. An investment of INR 1.37 lakh crore is anticipated to accomplish this objective.
The minister highlighted that the investment for 13.5 gigawatts last year amounted to INR 74,250 crore. Highlighting the primary goal of curbing carbon emissions, he noted the high demand in the power sector, prompting various measures to boost production capacities. Stressing the importance of proactive preparation, the minister pointed out the necessity to uphold a balance between supply and demand in the next 20-25 years.
