New Delhi: Premier Institutes of India, including top IIMs, Mumbai’s S P Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), and Indian School of Business among others have decided to include Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores in admission criteria for admitting international students.
IIM Calcutta, IIM Bangalore, SPJIMR Mumbai, Indian Business School of Hyderabad and National Academy of Legal Studies and Research are among the top institutes that will welcome GRE scores for the admission process starting from the academic year 2024-25.
Earlier, the Indian institutes admitted international students for admission based on Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores alone. According to the Educational Testing Service (ETS), approximately 100 institutes in India will now accept GRE scores from the next year.
From SPJIMR Mumbai, Ramesh Mishra, Assistant Director of Marketing and Admissions Outreach, said, “GRE candidates appear for the exam with the intention of studying abroad or pursuing dual-degree programs in collaboration with foreign universities”.
“At SPJIMR, we are accepting GRE scores for our Global Management Program, where candidates earn MS/MBA degrees from our international partner schools in the USA/UK/Europe. Currently, SPJIMR does not accept GRE scores for its full-time programs. If the All India Council for Technical Education sends guidelines, then we will have to evaluate if we need to include the GRE.”
Informing about the decision to accept the GRE for admission, the admission brochure released by IIM Bangalore for overseas students in the 2024–26 batch states that one of the requirements for admission is "a valid GMAT/GRE (administered in test center) score.
IIM Bangalore officials shared that this step is taken to attract more foreign students. “Almost all the top 50 B-schools across the globe accept the GRE score. To compete with this, we have to add more and more entry-level options for foreign students”, the official said.
GRE or Graduate Record Examination is conducted by ETS. Educational Testing Service (ETS) is a leading assessment company that creates and delivers a variety of worldwide tests, including TOEFL, TOEIC, and other skill-based exams in more than 180 countries.
