New Delhi: As per the latest updates, the student team of Sona College of Technology has secured first position in the Smart India Hackathon 2023 organised by the Union Ministry of Education. This marks the third consecutive victory of students in the national competition.
In the Smart India Hackathon 2023, Civil Engineering students of Sona College of Technology secured their first position for their inventive solution for pollution arising from construction and demolition waste. Students also secured the top position in the years 2020 and 2022 along with a cash award of INR 100,000.
The team's solution highlighted how demolition and construction waste can be sustainably redeployed on a commercial scale. The process involved crushing garbage, sifting it into coarse and fine aggregates, and adding it to a molten mixture produced from empty polypropylene bags used for transporting cement.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr Chocko Valliappa, Vice Chairman of Sona Group of Institutions, "In moulding Civil engineering professionals, our focus was traditionally on the technical aspects of designing and building structures. In 2022, the Sona College team achieved first place with an innovative idea that used COVID-19 Personal Protective Equipment kits to make plastic bricks at Smart India Hackathon 2022 held at the Coimbatore Innovation and Business Incubator (Forge) in Coimbatore.
