Recently, Prof. (Dr.) Sudhakar Yedla has been appointed as the new Director of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar.
New Delhi: Prof. (Dr.) Sudhakar Yedla has recently been appointed as the new Director of NIT Srinagar. Earlier, last week, he officially took over the position, succeeding Prof. (Dr.) Rakesh Sehgal, who recently completed his term. Prof. Yedla was warmly welcomed by Registrar Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari and Mohammad Hazik, the Assistant Registrar of the Director's Office and Legal, at Srinagar International Airport, along with his family.
After assuming his new role, Prof. Yedla held a meeting with the administrative staff of NIT Srinagar. Registrar Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari and other senior administrative officers were also present in the meeting. Subsequently, another meeting was held, including all the Deans, Heads of Departments, and Heads of Centers at the Institute.
During his inaugural address, Prof. Yedla expressed his deep appreciation for the illustrious heritage of NIT Srinagar. He emphasized that throughout its history, the institution has been a shining example of knowledge, a nurturing environment for intellectual curiosity, and a catalyst for positive transformation.
Prof. Yedla acknowledged the crucial role played by the administrative staff, faculty, colleagues, and students, stating that no accomplishment can be achieved without their support. He also added the need for collective effort to elevate NIT Srinagar as one of the top institutions in the country.
He said that his focus would be on facilitating an environment that supports the growth and well-being of NIT Srinagar, rather than prioritizing the interests of individuals. He also added that when the organization thrives, individuals also get benefits within its influence.
During the event, Prof. MF Wani extended a warm welcome to Prof. Yedla and ensured him of the complete cooperation and support from the teaching and non-teaching staff of NIT Srinagar. He conveyed his best wishes for Prof. Yedla's future endeavors and expressed hope that under his dynamic leadership, NIT Srinagar would achieve the highest rankings in the country.
NIT Srinagar Registrar, Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari, warmly welcomed the Director and stated that they're ready to provide support and contribute to his vision. He urged everyone to work together towards excellence, pushing the boundaries of knowledge, and creating a future where NIT Srinagar remains a shining example of learning, innovation, and positive change.
About Prof. Yedla, the new NIT Srinagar Director
Prof. Yedla holds a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Andhra University and a Masters and PhD degree in Environmental Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur), specializing in the Department of Civil Engineering. With 24+ years of experience in teaching and research, Prof. Yedla has established himself in the field.
His research interests encompass various areas, including Climate Studies, Urban Environmental Management, Sustainable Cities, Sustainable Mobility, Waste Management, Provision of Urban Services, Valuation of Environmental Services, and Assessment of Environmental and Socio-economic Impacts of Development Initiatives.
To enhance his expertise, Prof. Yedla completed his post-doctoral studies (PDF) at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand. He also holds a Diploma in International Environmental Law (DIEL) from UNITAR in Switzerland and a Certification from the World Bank Institute in Environmental Economics and Development Policy (CEEDP).
Prof. Yedla has accumulated a wealth of experience working at esteemed national and international institutions such as the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Japan, the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark, USA, the Korean Institute of International Economic Policy (KIEP) in South Korea, and again at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Japan.
He has also been invited as a visiting faculty member to numerous prestigious institutions in India and abroad. Before joining NIT Srinagar, Prof. Yedla held the position of Vice Chancellor at Dravidian University, Andhra Pradesh. Additionally, he has served as the Chairperson for the National Focus Group on Environmental Education for the National Curriculum Framework at NCERT.
Prof. Yedla received two nominations from the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to serve as a faculty member seconded by the Government of India at the Asian Institute of Technology. He held the role of project director for a significant regional research program focused on climate change (ARRPEEC), which received funding from SIDA.
Additionally, he contributed to another multinational research initiative by UN-FAO, specifically in the area of Roles of Agriculture. His expertise has been sought after by various international development agencies and think-tanks. He has collaborated with organizations like as UNDP-India, UNDP-Egypt, UNESCAP, UNEP-RRC, UNEP-Regional Office, World Bank, Global Environment Facility (GEF), United Nations University, DFID, Research Council of the UK, and IGES, Japan, on various consulting assignments.
Prof. Yedla's contributions have been recognized with eleven prestigious national and international fellowships. He has also received awards such as the fast track young scientist research grant from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, and the Fellowship for Best Paper from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) of the World Bank in Alexandria, Egypt.
