PM Modi Virtually Inaugurates IIT Kanpur-Mentored Indian Institute of Skills

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) Kanpur, an institute mentored by IIT Kanpur, was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the National Skill Training Institute in Kanpur. This initiative aims to provide young people with training and skills in new and emerging technologies.

Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in November 2023, IIT Kanpur is committing to mentor the Indian Institute of Skills for five years. Dharmendra Pradhan, the Minister of Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, signed the MoU.

On the occasion, Mr. J. D. Masilamani, Regional Director, Regional Directorate of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, UP, said, "This marks a major milestone in our journey towards encouraging skill development and entrepreneurship in India”.

“Through the mentorship of esteemed institutions like IIT Kanpur, I believe we can empower individuals with the necessary skills to thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of industry and innovation. This partnership represents the synergy between academia, industry, and government, laying the foundation for a skilled and prosperous nation”, he added.

IIT Kanpur and IIS To Offer Certificate & Diploma Courses 

IIT Kanpur will be crucial in supporting the Indian Institute of Skills Kanpur through the establishment of lab infrastructure, developing relevant course curricula focused on practical learning and assisting in recruiting faculty and technical professionals. 

In addition to this, IIT Kanpur and IIS will jointly offer certified diploma and certificate programs recognised by both institutions and establish the Centre for Deep Skill Training and Research (CDSTAR) within IIT Kanpur. CDSTAR aims to enhance the educational offerings at IIS Kanpur by emphasising in-depth skill training and research.

To enrich hands-on learning and foster collaboration between IIS and IIT Kanpur, the Centre for Deep Skill Training and Research at IIT Kanpur will accommodate at least six Deep-skill laboratories. These include the Noise and Vibration Lab, Advanced Control Systems Lab, Advanced Robotics Lab, Semiconductor Packaging Lab, Medical Imaging Lab, and Drug and Pharma Lab.
