Mangalore University Looking to Regain Control of its Hostels from District Administration

With the date for resuming academic activities coming closer, the authorities of Mangalore University are trying to regain the facilities that they handed over to Dakshina Kannada district administration for coronavirus control. The administration has converted the working women’s and ladies’ hostel into coronavirus care centres for asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic patients.

Mangalore University is planning to hold refresher classes for 15 days, starting from 1 September, after which examinations for fourth-semester postgraduate students will begin on 16 September.

The Karnataka State Higher Education Council is eager to resume academic activities in all state universities and has left the modalities to the respective universities. With a long gap in classroom teaching, some human interaction will be crucial before the final semester students take their examinations and hostels play a vital role in this.

After the district administration hands over the hostels to the university, it will take steps to sanitize the facilities, carry out emergency repairs and keep them ready for students who could start returning from 28 August. Accommodation for the final-semester students will be planned to ensure proper social distancing.

The Standard Operating Procedures that were used by the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board to hold the SSLC examination will be adopted. The university has already announced a tentative timetable for the examinations of both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
